Well although you knew the model to be fitted, the sse is quite high and adj r square is low. So when I don't have a predefined model, and my adj r square is low for most of the models I try, then how can I predict which model is the best one?

I would do this, except that my Excel file has all the variable names in the first column, not the first row. I tried saving a transposed version of the file that had all the variable names in the first row--and MATLAB did the idiotic thing of transposing my entire file so that once again, the variable names are in the first column. Very frustrating. I think I will stick with Excel for now.

+Nur Shafinaz Yes it can. It depends on how your lidar hardware produces data. ASCII formats can be read using txtread, or fscanf. You may also be able to connect your hardware's output directly to a computer for live streaming. Check the Data Acquisition Toolbox: www.mathworks.com/products/daq/
