Great question, and thought. For me it's not so much about what Google does "better", but when i look at different products and projects, what each does differently. And the privacy aspect of Matomo is really huge for me. Cost is relative. Google may be "free" as in beer, but it's certainly not "free" as in freedom, and their stance on privacy is quite clear. Your privacy (or lack there of) is the cost of using Google Analytics. They make their money through targeted advertising, so the data they collect on people is how they target those ads. The great thingn about the software world is there are so many choices for us. It's best to choose the right solution for you and your users, and at the end of the day, the rest is just stuff.

I already knew what you wrote though & also care about the same things, so I may have to formulate my questions in a different way: I wanted to know what Google Analytics does better or if it has an advantage on the cost side to be able to judge my opinions of webmasters & website operators who use Google Analytics on their website(s) because I sometimes contact webmasters about it criticising it. In case they have no real argument to use Google Analytics instead of a more privacy and open-web friendly alternative my opinion is that they are just lazy or overall bad at their job at the expense of website visitors, which often also are (potential) customers. Is it true that Google Analytics is completey free of cost in terms of money?

Fixing the recurring error about "unable to resolve host routemehome" is an easy one-line update to the /etc/hosts file.

You would think so wouldn't you. I've actually made that change, and changed it in the /etc/hostname file, but for some reason the way the virtual machine is setup in SSDNodes it's stuck with whatever I entered on setup of the account.

Depending on what is being analyzed. IP can be used to segregate visits, so if everyone uses a shared IP, that can pull down unique visits, though there are other methods for that. Location is generally tie to IP, so that can be thrown off.

I think it essentially runs a bunch of scripts to install all of the pieces and get them working together, so assuming that each piece can run on R PI 4, then it should, though you may have to make some manual changes to allow it to get the arm version.

When I add the bind-address to the my.cnf file it gives me "mysql: unknown variable 'bind-address=0.0.0.0' when attempting to login (before my password). Also when I attempted to add my DB without that bind-address statement to matomo, it gives a connection timeout. Any ideas?

When you try to login, are you trying to login while connected to the server via ssh? If so, you might just try to disconnedt, and connect using mysql -u -h -p and then enter your mysql password when prompted. I'm also getting this now, and I'm not sure what changed. But I appear to be able to login from remote, which is what you need for this tutorial, but not from local.

MO NEY they do have instructions to install without Docker, but I’m not familiar with the process. You could spin up the least expensive Digital Ocean droplet and run Matomo from there, then point it to any of your sites on shared hosting.

Many shared hostings have Matomo as a One-Click installation in DirectAdmin for example, so should be very easy
