Little theory: After the war of the ring, Gondor advanced so much over the thousands of years that they were able to colonize other planets. Eventually they found earth, seeing it in a similar war that they had against the orcs. A war for "The Simple right to simply exist" Gondor found sympathy for a fellow human populated planet & decided to intervene.

you left out the appearance of megatanks what made progress to retake half the conquered territorries. it was around 2:45 and made them shrink back to 2:05 state, then insectoid robots arrived and from that it was truly lost

Mostly this has just reinforced the idea that the Matrix universe is completely nonsensical. Nevermind that you will never get as much energy out of a human body as you put into it to sustain it, there is simply no way high energy machines were running on solar power and nothing else. Solar simply doesn't have the energy density for it. And even if there was some physics-breaking sci-fi solar cell that they used, there's nothing stopping the machines from switching to coal, gas or nuclear-based power generation. Hell, even burning wood and dung would work. Then there's the unbelievable idiocy of the humans' plan. Yes, to fight these machines who are in no way restricted to only using solar power, we will permanently block out the sun and hope that we don't all die from the inevitable global famine and ice age that will follow. I'm not sure if the factions from the Matrix are the MOST moronic in all of sci-fi (the aliens from that Signs movie still take the cake), but they are certainly pretty high up there. The sad part is, from what I've read there was a rough draft of the Matrix that didn't have all of these blatantly stupid world-building problems. Originally, the Matrix was supposed to have existed so the machines could farm human creativity and intelligence. Since they weren't good at creative thought, they figured out how to enslave the minds of their creators to do the mental heavy lifting for them, all the while living in a simulation of the 20th century to keep them docile while still stimulating their brains to innovate and inspire. But someone (or several someones) involved in the production decided that the audience was too stupid to understand the "farming creativity" idea, and made them dumb it down into the imbecilic joke the Martix's background lore became.
