▼About the Sanno Festival During the Tokugawa period, the mikoshi (portable shrine) was carried into Edo Castle, and successive shoguns, beginning with the third shogun, Iemitsu, would view and pay their respects at the "Tenka Matsuri" (national festival). It is the foremost of the three major festivals of Edo, and is counted among Japan's three major festivals along with the Gion Festival in Kyoto and the Tenjin Festival in Osaka. It is held every year in June.
In addition, the Shinko Festival, in which a 300-meter procession through the center of Tokyo is held every other year, is scheduled to be held as part of the Sanno Festival, and various events are held within the shrine grounds, including traditional Japanese music from the Edo period, tea ceremony, flower arrangements, and more.
