Matt has such a wonderful voice, i'm jealous. His music is so ethereal too, it has a way of gently lifting you up and flying you over rolling countrysides and through damp forests. Just beautiful stuff.

I didn't know Matt Berry was also a musician. You learn something new everyday. I think I like him even more now.

Love Matt Berry and I am too just discovering that he is a musician? Who knew?!! Musically not my bag to be fair, but I have to say very inoffensive and easy on the ear. I imagine his music is very popular........talented man.

Love this version even more than the one on the album. His music is the best around, no one comes close to his quality of song writing at the moment.

Matt Berry, if you are there, hello. I typically was not into folk but in more recent times discovered, among other things, Pentangle and Bert Jansch. I wonder if you like Bert. Hope you are well. 🎸🍀

Matt, you are very talented at singing and playing the guitar. I found you via What We Do In The Shadows, loved it when you played WWDITS open on the piano.....you were also funny in IT Crowd. All around you are BRILLIANT 🙂👍

idiot. a) It's wonderful and a great pleasure to hear new stuff from him. And b) the man may be a comedian (and the intro to the playlist was funny) who does a lot of funny stuff but the music itself isn't a joke and not even close to one. There were a number of tongue in cheek moments in Opium and one or two in Witchazel nit they are so good musically it really doesn't matter or detract.

Well, i for one love the tongue in cheek and don't think it detracts from his work but complements it - it's the best of both worlds, i love that his music can be poignant and also humorous. I'm not sure if Obsessed and So Obscure is from Witchhazel but i love that track and it embodies exactly what i.mean.

@@piynubbunyip Coke is refreshment! AHHHHH! Also, genuinely worth considering this is how some artists get paid now that people expect music to simply exist for free.. Not trying to be sanctimonious, but how can we expect music to continue to be produced? Putting it another way, don't complain when the stuff that does get produced turns out to be awful. People have to eat. If you see what i mean. Or to drink, as it were.

@@mothratemporalradio517 I think I was referring to Matt singing Medicine although I'm not sure now and it is oddly nice being jerked back in time! Strangely I had a coca cola for the first time this year today! THere was little choice at the place I went. I always find it fascinating looking at the different ways the art world, music world and cinema world deal with making a living. On youtube you can see youtube selling films but not music. Music is an interesting phenomena - you can play shows, press LPs for about £5 a piece and sell them for £18-£20 at concerts and mail order. Originally the 7" was to promote shows - then shows were used to promote record sales. Now we are in an interesting situation. Have you ever read Steve Albini's essay on the music industry? It is a short and enjoyable read and now slightly dated but illuminating. Now we have the internet in general for distribution. Our music can reach many places and promote tours. Here's his essay. ia800306.us.archive.org/35/items/TheProblemWithMusic/TheProblemWithMusicBySteveAlbini_text.pdf

@@piynubbunyip "Many of the annoying turds who used to staff college radio stations are in their ranks as well." Hahaha. Cheers! I hope your Coke was refreshing. I imagine I will re-emerge later with some more thought, but just wanted to say thanks for the article in the interim! KZbin is often twitchy and censorious with any links i try to post (although this is rarely consistent), so this has lowered my expectations of KZbin to the extent i find it thoroughly nifty that worked! Hope you're having a good one.

@@piynubbunyip not sure how this would play out in today's terms as i think the record industry has been transmogrified - and at the same time, brutal but unsurprising breakdown of what realistically faces a quantity of artists, even the "successful" ones. I actually wished he had talked more on the subject of hostage taking. I also thought his jaundiced opinion on contemporary techniques used by labels in terms of A&R was quite fascinating and while i have no intinsic insight into this scenario, it does remind me of sort of.. hegemony. The idea of underground peers as corporate assassins is interesting if perhaps not wholly surprising. I suppose the idea of the "sell out" is not a new idea but the specifics of the way this was described, right down to the angel hair pasta dinner, was quite captivating. In fact it would be interesting to see Steve Albini revisit this opinion piece and review whether the more things change, the more they stay the same. Sadly i think it is even worse for artists now. Thanks for this! I think it must have been a while since i saw something astute written about the music industry - let's not even open the parallel can of worms about what has happened to journalism in the same timeframe. Mind you, given Steve's tone, i can imagine him narrowing his eyes at journalists too. If he loathed community radio, god only knows what he'd make of the likes of _Pitchfork_ . Thinking about it now, the penny drops that i used to read about music but now i just don't any more. And a key part of that is the algorithm. In a way, i feel for me the algorithm may be the equivalent of Albini's Minor threat guy working in A&R. In terms of being presented with the paradise of an almost endless archive of free music, but one thatbis governed by AI, in terms of the ongoing production of music by artists, i am reasonably certain we are being led down the garden path to digging our own musical grave. The dopamine addiction is next level, alongside an increasing abyss of interesting new work. Perhaps we should be careful what we wish for! :v And yet in saying all this, i cannot turn away :L

Me too! - but if you go into the playlist i have up temporarily called Wednesday, you will find a bunch of stuff that is actually good. John Fahey, Robbie Basho, Lee Hazlewood, Jackson C Frank - not necessarily strictly folk but stripped down acoustic, lots of steel string and 12 string acoustic guitar. I also especially recommend checking out from the English ouevre the band Pentangle (try the live version of The Hunting Song to see what i mean) and associated guitarist Bert Jansch (try Blackwaterside), you may also like John Renbourn who also played in the band. I've a few more up my sleeve. . If you can't be bothered checking the playlist or see this late - as i made it as the easiest way of introducing some music/films to another KZbinr without links but it's not a proper playlist so i'll file it away soonish - please try Blues Runs the Game by Jackson C Frank, Voice of the Turtle by John Fahey, and Golden Shamrock by Robbie Basho (i'm thinking of another one but can't remember the name!) and Trouble is a Lonesome Town by Lee Hazlewood.
