Alex Payne, James Haskell and Mike Tindall are joined by Australian legend Matt Giteau from his home in Canberra for an incredible hour on the state of Wallabies rugby, two World Cup Finals, the Brumbies, Jonny Wilkinson, the Toulon days and THAT meeting with Robbie Deans.
Plus, there's an Eddie Jones impression and, encouraged by Danny Care, James tells us about his worst ever haircut.

Best House of Rugby so far 👍 I may be biased being in Oz but remember the first time I became aware of Matt when I was living in Canberra and went to a function pre match and a presentation was made to a returning junior Canberra side to the player of the series and up stepped a diminutive young man with PINK streaks in his hair , guess who? The guy I was with said something along the lines of he must be a good player to have the confidence to have a hairdo like that, well he certainly was right on that score.

Per Tindall's point I don't think Jonny trusted the England team between 07-11, as he did take so much of the game on himself but couldn't pull off the superhuman performance he wanted. I remember a game v Oz in 09 where he looked great but the rest of the team was duff and ultimately the performance didn't matter. Carter always played in a great team and he shined, Wilkinson had to hold the team up at times and the weight of that affected his performance. Going back to 02 and his performance against Ireland is perhaps one of the best I've ever seen from a player. He beat players, threw genius passes, kicked magnificently, and scored tries. He was in a complete team of leaders, much like Toulon where he became France's favourite foreign player ever.

Jonny had also lost quite a bit of form during his injury drought. Was not as accurate with his kicks or as sharp in defence until a couple of years into his move to Toulon. I don’t think he helped himself by staying at struggling Newcastle either. With all the mental health issues he’s talked about more recently, 2004-2006 must have been hellish. Regardless, Carter was the better player, but Jonny was the better match winner. The one time he didn’t play in 2003, England lost their 14-game win streak. When he returned after England lost 36-0 to South Africa, they reached the final, and so on.

Im still scarred from Wilkinsons performance against Ireland that year. There is a very very short list of England players that left Lansdowne Road as a legend in Irish Rugby for destroying an Ireland team. Wilkinson is on it.

What humility Matt Giteau. This is a guy who was a genius on the pitch, had some of that rare magic that only the Dan Carters of the world had, and he's here talking like some awkward 18 year old with everything yet to prove. And such respect for his elders.

Some useless trivia for anyone interested. The guy who called Eddie Jones "champ" was Matt Henjak and Matt's father Ivan played rugby league for the Canberra Raiders with Matt Giteaus father Ron.

I'm Welsh and I have the Utmost respect for Johnny Wilkinson!... The English saw the Welsh (Neil Jenkins) kicking game and how effective it could be, even against World Class, TopTeams and found the PERFECT guy for the job! I still prefer Jenkins although, Wilkinson is a close second. P.s I'm Welsh baby... 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🤠🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🤠🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🤠🤠🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿😷😷😷STAY SAFE!!!

Very sad about the stae of Aussie Rugby at Grass roots at the moment - But - Do people realise that it is also declining in the UK (Womens game is growing) but the mens game is declining - How do we stop and indeed reverse that??
@dandan4092
@dandan4092 4 жыл бұрын
The game inherently doesn’t lend itself to a wide audience. Too many rules, too many interpretations. Once you’re a fan you’re a fan for life but it’s getting more people into it is the problem. Plus you’re competing with loads of sports here in the UK and in Aus, cricket, league and Aussie rules take much higher precedence. Another issue in Aus is you have two other contact sports ahead. It’s difficult man. I think that’s why we are seeing things like rugby x coming out to try and get more people into it. It’s a beautiful game and I hope it survives.

@@dandan4092 I do agree with your points, but we are also very bad at promoting or developing the game. We need ambition. Every country that plays this sport should be aiming to get a Rugby Coach in every school!! That is the only way to grow the game. Get players involved early and then provide them continuity until they leave school. Here the RFU and CB and Clubs should work together to make this happen. We always settle for second best and we shouldnt!! Obviously a very difficult thing but that should be our aim. Our issue is a lack of vision!
@dandan4092

Tyrone Matthews mate I agree with that - that’s a great idea. Need to escape that elitist perspective of rugby, at least in England. Definitely get coaches into every school. As I said you fall in love with the game.

Not sure how logistics work but why don’t we include up and coming nations, like Germany, Spain, etc in European Leagues? Almost acting as a club to try and accelerate growth of the game. I don’t know, thinking out loud!

@@dandan4092 Yes agreed i was lucky enough to play Germany, Sweden when i was playing and they have some pretty useful players (Many Years ago) but we need to develop these nations for the growth of the sport. Romania, Italy, Georgia etc....
