As an ND fan, I agree with this guy. ND sports writers are acting like haters against Kelly. If I was an LSU fan, I would be excited. He did have two deficiencies at ND: 1. He never quite developed an all American QB. Kiser could have been, but went pro early. 2. He kept assistant coaches around him out of loyalty rather than getting the best guy. But, he cleaned that up. His final 3 d coordinators were all outside of his coaching tree: Marcus Freeman, Elko and the Vandy Coach.

I think Coach Driskell's comments are misunderstood. People saying he's contradicting himself are missing the point. Coach Kelly wasn't recruiting hard enough to play at the same level as the top tier teams, but we did have some talent. The problem is we didn't have the depth and quality of talent that the best teams enjoy. LSU recruits itself, they have a good pedigree with national championships and NFL superstars. We'll see how he does, maybe he'll work harder if he doesn't need to work too hard on the recruiting trail. It'll be interesting to see how he does! Bryan Driskell has talked to former coaches at Notre Dame that were recruiting high level players(high four stars/five stars). The coaches would ask Brian Kelly to call those players to finish the deal and Kelly’s response to them would be, “ we shouldn’t have to convince kids to come to Notre Dame.” And those top level players would go elsewhere because they never got to talk to the head coach.

@Dr Karl Marks getting the recruits is one thing but how he handles them is another. The stories he said are not disputed by anyone that covers ND all ND beat writers have the same stories about how BK wouldn't meet with 5* players because he was golfing or on vacation. Also he is supposed to be a "qb guru" the QB position during his tenure was never great. They always has an undersized kid with "moxie" that could beat the teams you should beat but never the top programs. He also kept poor coaches on his staff because he wanted yes men. Every good coach left because he would start to hate on them if they got too much credit for the team doing good. Mike Elko is a perfect example. He started taking shots at Freeman last year when he was getting a lot of credit for the defense. Most ND fans and writers acknowledge he brought the program back to a good level and he deserves credit for that. But if he does at LSU what he did at ND he will not win an SEC title let alone a national championship.

I'm hearing you, and I don't always agree with Driskell. But if Kelly recruits at LSU the way he did at Notre Dame, LSU will have the same recruiting problems as Notre Dame did. Good news is I don't think he will. He was beginning to realize that he needed to do a better job of recruiting, which is one of the reasons he went after Marcus Freeman. But what you say about filling up his staff with people who know how to recruit in Louisiana concerns me a bit. The biggest knock on Kelly's recruiting at Notre Dame was kids telling the news media that they passed on Notre Dame because Kelly never talked to them. If he hasn't changed that, I can't see him bringing in top classes at LSU either. As for jilted lover, maybe for some fans. Maybe there's a sour grapes component too. But some of us have been waiting around a long time watching Kelly develop as a coach, from pretty much mediocre the first few years to very good the last five. It seemed to me that if he could solve recruiting, he would have us in serious contention for a NC. When he left and Freeman came in, it's hard not to compare Kelly's success in recruiting with Freeman's, and I have to say that Kelly isn't as good as Freeman. If that's because Freeman is better at overcoming the special issues at Notre Dame than Kelly is, then he may do fine at LSU (and I hope he does). If not, then I expect there will be problems at LSU as well.
@robertclark58742 жыл бұрын
Well said, I agree with everything there. A big difference is that LSU recruits itself, local kids don't need a lot of convincing to commit. LA has a lot of kids that grow up idolizing LA->LSU->NFL stars, many of which were lower/middle class. I think a lot of local kids see football as a legit pathway to a better life, or at least a scholarship, and that has spawned a high level of HS talent. ND certainly has a huge football reputation and NFL roster presence, but the academic requirements and geography/climate/culture/facilities all factor against it for recruits. I never liked BK because he seemed kinda stiff and without much personality. Ed O on the other hand became waaaay too loose and even started to make Louisianans cringe, that didn't last long. But I'm glad that BK gets to have this lifestyle change and loosen up a little, eat crawfish and be king of a Mardi Gras parade. I think it was a good change for him and hope he is successful.

These criticisms have been all over the Notre Dame message boards pretty much Kelly’s whole career at ND. Disagree or think he is good enough to win a title at LSU if you want but none of it started after he left. I found him very frustrating because I found him to be a bundle of contradictions. He would put a lot of emphasis on hiring good assistant coaches both at recruiting and developing talent. Great! The contradiction is he would make an occasional bad hire and refuse to acknowledge or address it. He does stress recruiting with his staff but was usually Aloof from it himself. His record with QBs at ND is very hard to understand. For as much as he micromanaged the position ND had very limited luck recruiting or developing the position. That’s exactly the point, though. Notre Dame HAS to recruit nationally to be competitive, which is a disadvantage. LSU does not. Don’t you see that? LSU can easily recruit a national-championship caliber team with players only within a 6-hour radius from campus. Between Louisiana, Mississippi, South Alabama, and East Texas, LSU coaches have easy and consistent access to elite talent with long-standing relationships with those high school coaches. Hell, even the talent within a 90-minute radius of Baton Rouge is staggering. Future NFL players everywhere. Brian Kelly has already been much more proactive and personally involved in recruiting at LSU because it takes much less of his time than cross-country flights from South Bend. At LSU, almost every recruit is just a quick car ride or jet flight away. He can personally visit several recruits in the morning and be back before afternoon practice. That’s just not possible at Notre Dame, or any other school that has to recruit a very broad footprint to compensate for the lack of local talent.

Does Moscona not know that ND recruits nationally and isn't confined to Indiana and the Midwest? Moscona needs to look at ND rosters to see that ND barely has 10% of its players from Indiana if that. It probably has as many from Louisiana as Indiana. The knock on Kelly was that he did not work that hard to get the elite recruits but then complained about talent disparity when ND got outclassed by top 10 teams. If Kelly said that ND didn't have the resources for him to produce natty caliber teams then there are no excuses at LSU which has 1st rate everything.
@AMac52 жыл бұрын
you clearly didn't understand the point Matt Moscona was making... His point is that even with all the "BK is lazy in recruiting" talk and that being the main reason why alot of ND fans say he won't win a championship at LSU is irrelevant because he doesn't really have to recruit Louisiana hard... The state is littered with top talent and those young men want to go to the only power 5 school in the state...

@@AMac5 And you, Moscona and other LSU faithful didn't listen to Bryan Driskell when he said ND's talent was clearly due mostly to the effort of the assistant coaches and not Kelly. @AMac52 жыл бұрын
@@dat868 ~ I heard and understood when Bryan Driskell explained that... The point of him being lazy as a recruiter is irrelevant and you can't compare ND to LSU in that aspect because you mentioned in the top comment that less than 10% of ND's roster is from Louisiana... 60% of LSU's roster is from Louisiana and that includes many 5 stars... BK doesn't have to hop on a plane every single time he wants to make an in home visit to a top recruit so the point of him being lazy as a recruiter is completely irrelevant... And you ND fans are completely dismissive of the recruiting barriers that BK said limited him in South Bend...
@dat8682 жыл бұрын
@@AMac5 If you're saying that Brian Kelly can be a lazy/uninvolved recruiter and still get all the top kids in Louisiana to come to LSU I guess time will tell. But again you aren't realizing that Kelly DID NOT hop on planes to recruit very often while at ND. He usually only did it when it was convenient such as after playing USC in LA or other special occasions. LSU does have lower academic standards for football players so it will be easier to admit top recruits that ND would have rejected. Personally I do not hate Kelly but it's classless for him to keep blaming ND for his inability to deliver a playoff win or national championship. There will be no excuses at LSU since he says he has everything he's ever wanted.

@brandonhaines19202 жыл бұрын
Brian Kelly did not recruit and was well documented. Understanding of this, though. Academics are a major part of Notre Dame's culture much like Stanford so finding athletes who are academically and athletically driven is extremely difficult. I believe that Brian Kelly did not know how to recruit these types of players and put that on the coaches. Take Jack Kiser for instance who is from Indiana. He was academically well rounded and I believe only a 3 star athlete who also won Indiana Mr. Football. He was recruited by Coach Lea or the DC before him. I never once saw or heard anything from those closest to his recruiting that Brian Kelly was involved in the discussions with him. The only reason I know this is because I coach for a team who is in the same conference where Kiser went to high school. Same thing for other recruits like Paul Moala who is from Mishawaka which is the next city over from South Bend. It was the other coaches putting in the work doing the recruiting and it seemed like they didn't have any direction from BK on who to target.
