It's a risk I wouldn't have taken. Not only has Murray struggled for a sustained period of time he's never been durable. Hasn't hit 40 games played since 2018 which happens to be the only year he played 50 games. When you're in win-now mode reliability is everything in net.

The question then is, who do you gamble on? I looked at the available UFA options, and it's grim. There are 2 options probably better than Murray (Kuemper and Campbell), and by my count, at least 10 teams that need either a starter or a backup, with more than 2 other teams needing a starter. The options were terrible. This is a gamble, but I think it's a better gamble than Jones, Samsonov (.899 with Washington last season, compared to Murray's .906 with Ottawa), or some guy I hadn't heard of prior to looking who is a Rule 6 UFA because of his age and number of games.

@@gurp1997 Lol. I've watched a lot of pens games. Matt Murray won two cups and was absolutely lights out in those first two years he played, but he was (for the most part) the underdog goalie who outperformed MAF and eventually became their #1. Then after, MAF got traded, the pressure was bestowed upon Matt Murray's shoulders, and afterwards he became much more inconsistent, letting in bad goals and becoming notably undurable when he suddenly had to play a full season. It seems that the first two seasons were the exception and not the rule, as he wasn't seen as a great prospect going into the league, and the majority of his time in the league he has been below average. Now he's in the most scrutinized market in the world; what do you think will happen?

Well here's a bit of trivia. Did you know every Canadian team has made the Stanley Cup finals in last 2 decades. Yes Canucks, Oilers, Flames, Senators, Habs all made finals except for one team. You guessed it. Perennial loser Leafs never made finals. It's a Canadian tradition for a team to make finals and lose but Leafs are always stuck first round.

As much as I agree, there was talk (before COVID) that the cap was going up big time, close to 90mill by this year, so we would have had absolutely no problem having an 11mill second line center and good goalies. It was unforeseen and it fucked us. BUT, before signing JT, EVERYBODY always laughed that nobody wanted to be in Toronto and the fans constantly whined that we never got the big name free agent.. The truth is, the Penguins set up Murray to fail. Rather than bring in a competent back-up to mentor him, Rutherford signed Niemi instead. The guy was absolutely aw-ful. Probably cost the Pens a division title and possible three-peat. If that wasn't bad enough, the Pens goalie coach stunted Murray's development even more. Murray and TML know this and won't repeat the same mistakes.

@@timthefatfan2328 what was bozak meant to do? He was the fourth line center for St. Louis he wanted a higher aav then what we wanted to pay for a potential 4th liner. Barrie has no one else but himself to blame for that shitshow for a year. Ceci was only traded back to us because to make salaries match because that trade was meant to undo Lou’s fuckup of the zaitsev deal. So in reality he had to waste some of his assets because of Lou’s great intuition of giving old or bad players big deals. His only really bad trade was the kadri trade which only happened because naz was suspended in back to back playoff series’s otherwise he would still be in a leaf jersey.
@timthefatfan2328
@timthefatfan2328 2 жыл бұрын
@@ajiboy1919 BOZAK as a 4th line center would have been worth it cuz he would be a 1st line center playing 4th Line center for us. Which is like you said is exactly what the Blues did, put him on the 4th line. Instead we spent 3-4 years doing a carousel with centers at the 4th line and that COST MORE then what Bozak would have cost. What happened to the team that got Bozak? They won a cup that first yr he was on and he scored one or 2 important OT playoff goals for them on the way. Who likes players that score goals in playoff OT games eh? Including the OT winner against Washington when he was on the leafs. But meh we got other guys that could do that right? You are right, Bozak was worthless I guess. At the time he could have played as a 1st,2nd, or 3rd line center on any team in the league. He was legit our 1st line center for like 10 years. What's wrong with that talent playing on the 4th line and if our centers got injured he could fill that in. Also, he was our best penalty shot shooter. But meh he was $1million too expensive. Also LOU literally gave DUBAS outrageous CAP space with many, many 1st round picks. How many have we actually got from those? He has given them all away, along with the cap space. One more, peter MRAZEK pickup and Zaitsev was better then CECI. Kadri got suspended because the refs didn't protect our player in Marleau and KADRI stood up for him. His punishments have also always been extremely severe and took place during a changing NHL. The shit he did wasn't even flinched at 3-4 years before that. Compare him to Brad Marchand, who is more of a liability then Kadri and dirtier. He will be in Boston forever. Live and die by your guys especially ones that STICK UP for your teammates. Next is Tavares who we did not need and could have used that money to stack our DEFENCE since we already had Anderson for like 2-3 years still. Matt Murray is the final fn straw. Absolutely nothing of Value in that guy. Well he won back to back cups on a STACKED Pittsburgh team. Rightttt

Murray risk aside, Toronto has approx 6.3M left under the cap, and need to fill 6 more positions on their roster. That leaves them, essentially, an average of just 1M to spend per player to fill out the roster. I look at this as just another season of Toronto being an overly top heavy team that will rely heavily on their top line.

Its the 2nd half of a back to back. but yeah depending on how that opener against Montreal the first night goes, that home opener could host a really good crowd or a really toxic one. Samsonov, Lankinen, and Comrie are all mid 20 y/o goalies. Lankinen was on a Bad Blackhawks team, but last year looked good and even looked like a Calder candidate at the start of the year. Maybe there is something there. Comrie had a .920% sv percentage last year with the Jets. Hellebuyck (in more starts obviously) had a .910%. Maybe there is something there. Samsonov had a good rookie year 3 years ago, and has shown flashes, just hasn't been consistent. Maybe there is something there. However you slice it, I fell like the Leafs need to go after one of them. Samsonov would probably be the most expensive, but I personally wouldn't pay more than $2.5 mil for any of them, and I doubt any other GM in the league would either (though idk there are some dumb ones who may be desperate). If the Leafs can sign one of them for say $1.75 mil for 2 or 3 years, it can help provide depth and be at least a backup option for a few years. Just some random thoughts

I think the Avs are actually the model for the Leafs. Kuemper was good, not great, for the Avs, but that's all he needed to be with that firepower. I think that's the bet the Leafs are making as well. Hopefully, with the resultant savings, they can sign a few more useful depth players, as Colorado has done. Georgiev has just as many question marks as Murray does, but Sakic made the rational decision to take him on, precisely because you've got a solid 1B in Francouz (who played very well in the playoffs when called upon). So I'm hoping that Murray isn't the final word and that someone like Samsonov is the 2nd option, not Kallgren

As a Sens fan, it is an absolute win for us. Murray had a solid season last year, but it should have a giant asterisk. He had a stretch of like 9 games where he was dominant, but also had just as many bad games as well. With such a small sample size his sv% and GSAx could’ve tanked with a few more games played. Factor in his injury history the past few years and the salary owed (7M + 8M) and the Sens had to move on. Even if he rebounds and gains back his form and stays healthy, it’s a win for the Sens. The assets they gave up are minimal, and the cap space cleared could be used to sign Giroux or trade for Weegar/Chychrun. The Leafs helped create that chance. The Leafs are betting on Murray to stay healthy, when he hasn’t played 50 games in 4 years. Plus how does this effect the option of resigning Bunting next off-season? Murray has a 2nd year on his deal. Hopefully he does well. He’s had a few rough years from a hockey standpoint and personal standpoint. Seems like a great guy, but for a guy that already had confidence issues the Toronto market could eat him alive.

Coming from the Sens POV, watching Dorion making these moves that usually wouldnt make under the influence of Melnyk (RIP to him). Dorion is buying it seems like, we need that top 4 guy, and we need another top 6 guy in Giroux to round it all out, if we could land a guy like Giroux and/or Chychrun i'm pretty sure this Sens team isn't gonna stop there. Theres so many options out there, and with the Sens you just dont know what can happen, this type of deal with Murray was needed. the leafs Bought into it, and im blessed about it. just need to move the Zaitsev deal and then the Sens could figure out their extensions with no problem starting with Norris and Debrincat of course.

Calling this trade a head-scratcher is an understatement. Murray has never played 51 games in a season and the last time he played 39 games was 2019-20 with a 0.919 Save% and a 2.67 GAA. His never healthy and arguably made his reputation off Sidney Crosby. He won 20 games his final season in Pittsburgh and 15 the next TWO seasons in Ottawa. How does this help the Leafs? I'm really trying to see this. It's helping Ottawa too. Why help your opponents? They couldn't find a way to get even Alexander Georgiev, whom I'm not a fan of. I'm rooting for you, Steve. Great video as usual, but this is more confusing than Tenet.

You know you're a contender for yet another first round exit when: Your goalie plan is to take a guy who the team you traded with happily gave you two picks and retained salary to get rid of. Your goalie plan is based on a hope and a prayer, that your starter can return to form. Solid. Not surprising for a team that operates on 1.5 lines of zero heart, the rest of the lineup is filled with trash and/or players looking to play out their days close to their cottages. This was a wasted era, it was such a simple thing to manage too, pay the kids AFTER they win something, but not in Toronto, because we could but we never will.....

The Leafs face a fundamental math problem. They have put too much of their limited cap space into scoring goals and too few of those dollars into stopping goals. They need to reallocate some of those dollars to their own end of the ice. That means only one thing. Willy has to be traded. I said it. I mean it. I know it won't happen, but until it does we are looking at more exciting high scoring regular season games and bitter disappointment in the playoffs. Well if any team will give him that spark then this is his best shot. But gotta be honest. Leafs is a fishbowl and there's a lot of pressure. When you're making $5 million playing in Leafs Nation the weight of expectations can be stressful. My feeling is Murray is done. He's lost his mojo. He did great in his first couple years as a rookie and was paid a rookie salary so there's no expectation of anything. I think he's struggling with the pressure of expectations now that he's highly paid and everyone expects him to repeat his Stanley Cup performance. Truth is very very few goaltenders can sustain that level of performance for many years. Dominic Hasek, Patrick Roy, Carey Price, Ben Bishop are the very few. Most goaltenders will peak with 2 or 3 great years and then they fade never to rediscover that form again. This is the norm. Do KZbinrs agree?

I haven't looked up stats myself, but from what I've heard Mat Murray had better numbers than Jack last season, and if the Leaf's medical staff can help him remain healthy, .... and even if he has the odd bad game lets not forget the Leafs can win a lot of games just on their scoring touch alone.

Honestly, I wish the Leafs did some cheap bargain bin hunting, guys like Adin Hill or Eric Comrie, who have shown potential in the NHL, and can be signed/traded for cheap. If one of them works out, great. If not, no big deal. Low risk, high reward. Not to mention how they could stack the forward corps and blueline if they went this route. This however… woah. The team is at a breaking point, and if they fail in the first round again, or fail to even make the playoffs. This core is done.
