Ayreon is a prog rock/metal opera project of Dutch musician Arjen Anthony Lucassen. He writes the songs and invites guest singers and musicians to perform them. Mostly a studio project , they have put together a few live shows, with another scheduled for next month. He writes concept albums, telling the story across multiple albums with each singer as a separate character. Although this is from the latest album ,Transitus , which isn't part of the main storyline. Yes, Simone as the Angel of Death, and Tommy Karevik (Kamelot, Seventh Wonder) as Daniel are 2 of the main characters on this record. 12 main characters in total. The usual starting point for Ayreon, and a highly recommended song , is The Day That The World Breaks Down. That song is from the 2017 album The Source and features 11 singers, some you will know.

Enjoyed your reaction. This is an unusual first song to be introduced to Ayreon. Most Ayreon albums exist in the Forever universe and have a common Sci Fi backstory about how human beings came to be on Earth. Transitus is not part of that storyline and is instead a stand alone rock opera set in a Victorian type setting with elements of Romeo and Juliet and Wurthering Heights. This song is more musical theater then most Ayreon songs which tend to be heavier and more prog rock/prog metal. Arjen Lucassen (genius behind the project) originally wrote this to be turned into a film but it never got that far. There is a comic book that goes along with the album. I love this performance and also Daniel’s Descent into Transitus Medley because we get to see a more playful and sassy side to Simone. I would definitely checkout The Day that the World Breaks Down. It is more typical of Ayreon songs and is one of Arjen's favorite songs.

Last week I saw Ayreon live for the very first time and it blew my mind. As others have mentioned already, this is not the typical Ayreon. I'd recommend Amazing Flight from Into the Electric Castle and Other Stories live in Tilburg 2019.

@@MattsMoshPit1 no, they won't. If there's a concert it is always in Tilburg, Netherlands. And only one weekend because of the difficult logistics. All the singers have their own bands and schedules. Preparation time for the shows is about 2 years if I remember correctly. People from 60 countries met this time. The community is amazing.

The Aureon project has many different well-known metal vocalists, and of course Simone is one of them. In this song, there are two more girls on backing vocals - Marcela Bovio and Caroline (I don't remember the last name), Marcela, unlike Simone, is a permanent member of the project.

When it comes to Ayreon, the rabbit hole is deep and long! Some people think that the background “thrum” is reminiscent of the theme music to Dr Who, which is appropriate because the narrator is Tom Baker who played the Doctor back in the early years of the program. @@MattsMoshPit1 Most people go for the two big live shows: although the Ayreon project has been going for over 20 years there has been only two major concerts (although a third is happening in a couple of weeks, and I have a ticket!) The first is the Ayreon Universe Live show which is a “best of” selection of the most popular songs. I’m going to suggest that you start with the last song from the show because all the singers and musicians appear on stage at the end so you can get an idea of the range of talent in the show. You may even recognise some of the performers, who are mostly from European metal bands.
