Matt Rife is facing backlash. The comedian, who rose to fame on TikTok, sparked controversy by telling a joke about domestic violence in his new Netflix special "Natural Selection." Amid the controversy, Rife took to his Instagram Stories to issue a fake apology. "If you've ever been offended by a joke I've told, here's a link to my official apology. Tap to solve the issue," he shared. The link that the Rife included takes followers to a website selling products described as "special needs helmets" for children and adults. 9 out of 10 times I'm going to side with the comedian in these instances, but I don't think "being a comedian" gives you the right to say whatever you want and not have any blowback. The vast majority of the population can tell when something is in good faith or not, and that's why they don't get "cancelled". However, there are instances (Michael Richards who played Kramer comes to mind) when people can tell that came from a place of hate, and then we don't see much of that person anymore

fine but did you think it was funny? i totally agree that we can laugh about any serious subject, but the joke was just dumb. it was straight up the kind of joke that middle school bullies would make. and so the apology disgusts me, not because of it’s nature (basically exactly the same apology in diff context would be funny) but because for me it goes to show that the more ‘sophisticated’ material he’s done previously is not a peak through the layers but acc just a cloak for his superficial, stereotypically jocky, dipshit humour.. u know what i mean?

a comedian usually gets more famous by cancelling them, you want to see more of their material, I think this is an extremely calculated and smart move by Matt Rife, it's really hard to cancel a comedian when they are selling out shows and already have a large following.

I think the punchline was a little too specific, so it suggests that it could be in bad taste. Think he would've been better off saying "well I dunno about you, but I think if she was in the kitchen more, she might not have that black eye." When you say something specific like "woman can't cook" "women should cook more" it can be a little more incendiary or provoking. But when you just say "women belong in the kitchen" well there's plenty of shit you can do in the kitchen, hell not everyone in the kitchen in a restuarant is cooking. The message still lands. It's just more general.

Come on now. People should know by now how comedians are. He didn't intend to literally offend anyone. It's a joke about being the "face of a company" while having a black eye. People just want to cancel him because hes trying to break away from being just "the pretty comedian". Hes funny. Leave him alone.

I like dark and edgy jokes but i think the reason many didnt like it or didnt think it was funny was because the joke wasnt worded well, the joke was basically "oof she has been hit by her partner i dont want her to serve me she should be away from the public because she has a black eye". Matt Rife didnt say the joke like that was a shocking thing to say or the joke being that that would be a dick head thing to say, the joke was said as if it was a "relatable" thing to think or say. Im not a comedy expert but thats just how i interperated the joke and because i think it missed the catagory that it was meant to be in.

I have to say I've watched his other comedy and the way he started this joke was coming off as an ass, not saying they felt bad for her if they thought it was abuse, just laughing IMMEDIATELY about it is insane, he started already seeming to NOT CARE and that's why it comes off as sour and arrogant and not caring ... this type of joke could have been told differently... for me to immediately laugh or he is even pretending to laugh at the black eye out of the gate was his downfall...it should have been like " man this poor server had a black and we both were wondering why they put her still up front ...."and then maybe say something about her working in the back but still feel guilty for the joke.... I actually don't see why everyone is giving him a pass ...this is dark stuff and he came in unserious from the start.....I don't feel like it's his other jokes like people that have been to jail or whatever because clearly they served their time and are out ...but this server could have been beaten and she doesn't have help and all you did was use her for a joke 😕...you could have actually asked if she was ok....he just came off like he didn't give a sh*t even though she could have actually been abused😢

What is wrong with society today? Why is everyone so freaking sensitive. I developed common sense by watching slapstick, comedy and silly movies like airplane and Amazon women on the moo , which were very offensive racially, and realizing that it was a joke. I love those movies When did you have to be abnormally intelligent to realize what a joke was. It’s a comedy show, he’s not on the street on a platform preaching to people. It’s literally intended to be funny. As a minority women I always hear jokes about my culture but I don’t get offended. I don’t get upset when people talk about stuff like that. Because I have a sense of humor, which is some thing I think that these people need to get. Do not go to a comedy show or watch one if you can’t take a joke. It’s a joke. If you don’t wanna laugh and go to a comedy show don’t go, but don’t ruin it for the rest of us who can understand the difference between reality and a joke.

I didn’t find the joke very funny, but also not offensive to me, except of course the apology 😭🤣. I personally think Rife is funny asf, I watch a lot of clips and his full stand up videos. I totally understand why people would feel offended, if they’ve gone or knew someone who went through that, but many comedians tell risky jokes like that. They’ll get over it. I should also mention that maybe y’all should look into the comedian you’re attending. Watching Matt’s other videos, it’s clear that many of his jokes aren’t for very sensitive people.

I'm usually pretty tolerant of controversial jokes and usually appreciative when it pushed the culture's buttons and makes people reflect on themselves. I thought Dave Chapelle did not deserve the treatment he got, he is the greatest comedian of all time. But this wasn't even funny, didn't make a point, wasn't edgy or helpful, just was weird and he looked awkward after he said it. I don't get it.

@@Bones-od3rg So your argument is: "There are people that don't understand that jokes are fictitious, and so we can't tell any jokes that if taken as not fictitious would be harmful" With that same logic you could argue that fictitious tv shows, movies, music, and any other form of fiction that in any way depicts a harmful behavior should not be allowed. You are arguing that, because there are a small minority of individuals that are either too dumb, or too immature to understand something, the rest of us mature, well adjusted adults shouldn't be allowed to do it. The same argument could be used to ban almost anything from cleaning chemicals to firearms, on the basis that because there exists some dumbass out there that will drink the cleaning chemicals, the rest of us can't have it. It's a completely ridiculous argument, because if it were universally applied, the only thing we could really do would be to sit in a padded room all day humming and twiddling our thumbs, because almost any behavior can be harmful under the right circumstances. Hell, you could walk out your front door, trip and fall and break your neck on the steps. Should we outlaw steps?
