Sir, I saw this video 3 years back when I was in 11th grade. I was about to give my finals and this video cleared all my doubts. you were so well organized throughout the explanation. I forgot to gave a nice comment when i watched this video for the first time, it's never too late , so here i am. Wishing you good health sir. Love from India.

We used this in the fire department when calculating fire hose nozzle pressures. At the pump, we had to calculate incoming available water from the hydrant (gallons per minute depending on the water main diameter) while feeding different diameter fire hoses with nozzles at the end that were squirting water 2 or 3 stories above ground level; taking what we called "Friction Loss" and "Elevation Loss" into consideration so as not to starve the hose by not providing enough water for the men at the nozzle (while also taking into consideration the fire load at the time), or by over-pressuring the line making it difficult to control or move (hose too stiff to bend). It was fascinating to take all this into consideration at the time, and nerve-wracking at the scene because what you dialed (nozzle pressure and gallons per minute) directly affected the interior attack personnel and their safety.

For anyone as confused as I was by this, hopefully what follows helps. The initial configuration considers the fluid between left end of tube and beginning of the region of small length dX2 . The final configuration has the same fluid between the end of region dX1 and right end of tube. The total energy of the bulk of the fluid between both regions does not change during the time dt (= dX1/v1=dX2/v2) the fluid takes to enter region dX2 and leave region dX1. The work done by the contact (fluid) forces f1 and f2 at both ends of the fluid during the motion is f1dX1-f2dX2. The contact force of the tube on fluid is perpendicular to fluid and hence does no work on fluid. No friction forces either. The only other force that does work on fluid is gravity. The change in PE of the fluid involves cancelling the PE of the bulk of the fluid between both of the regions at the ends of the tube. That is why only the PE of both ends appears. Similarly for the change in KE, however you are assuming that the velocity of the fluid at any given point in the tube does not change with time.

Actually, F1 and F2 are being applied to different bodies so we cannot talk about the work on the control volume 1 ou 2. Also the argumentation W = pV does not apply to incompressible fluids, in particular liquids. And the Bernoulli principle does apply to liquids! This traditional way of deriving the Bernoulli equation brings much confusion because of unjustified approaches.

@yoprofmatt
@yoprofmatt 6 жыл бұрын
Force is certainly pushing the water up the pipe. But we have "stopped" the camera to look at a frozen moment in time. The important point is at 1:01 - The mass m of water occupies some volume given by area A1 and length Δx1. This mass is the same at the bottom of the pipe and the top of the pipe. From this we can derive Bernoulli's equation. Hope this helps. Cheers, Dr. A
