It's the most famous equation in history, but what does it mean? SDSU students ponder Einstein's E=mc² and look at its implications for our everyday lives.

I really enjoyed the derivation of E=mC² I haven't taken Differential Equations and probably won't because time, money, and my major doesn't require it, but I'm happy I was able to follow along. I'm very glad that was included in this video. This was excellent, I very much enjoyed it.

pc^2 gets no love, it explains so much about light and is the complete equation

Frank, Excellent point. If you consider m as the rest mass, then you really need E² =(pc)² + (mc² )² . Just as you said, with light you have m = 0 so you end up with E = pc. Which can be combined with the photon energy E = hν = hc/λ. And then you end up with the DeBroglie relation: p = h/λ. Light has energy and light has momentum and it all fits together beautifully. (For this video, of course, we were trying to keep it as simple as possible.) Cheers, Dr. A

+Matt Anderson Ohh I see, well love the videos, I've found them great for refreshing concepts. Especially as the GRE in physics draws closer. Cheers

Did you know this: E = 5th letter of alphabet M = 13th letter of alphabet - so 1 + 3 = 4 C = 3rd letter of alphabet 2 = 2 (not a letter of the alphabet i admit)

Mass is NEVER EVER CONVERTED to ENERGY. Instead it can DEVELOP Energy if it acquires SPEED. There can be no energy without mass and in eneral the greter the ma the greater the energy (for a given speed). Remember mass can neither be created nor made to disappear. There are 2 equatins for Kinetic or moving energy and several for Potential or non-moving energy. E=M^2 is one of the 2 equations for Kinetiv or moving Energy. Again the greater the mass the greater the Energy. Mass can DEVELOP or BECOME Energetic. It does NOT get Converted to ENERGY. No MASS = No ENERGY
