Wanted to add, sometimes we let the apprentices do some of the crap work, but a good journeyman does his share too. Especially to show the apprentices what to do. I never took advantage of their labor, I always helped and in fact helped them in class.Especially welding class. Always teach the apprentices, they are your future.

Gravy dude, awesome. Same thing I did for 36 years in Sheet Metal Workers Union, I was the only certified welder in my company, had 5 certs and had to go out and weld in all kinds of places, usually hospitals, stainless steel exhaust and hoods etc. Had to make parts all the time. Just like you. I am enjoying retirement and watching you still doing it, haha. Good videos, bro. Love it.

Those are some interesting insides into the upkeeping of a ship. Looks like it would just rott away over time if not maintained.

Fact is a ship's deck needs constant maintenance as the weather takes a heavy toll. By the time you have finished fixing the bow you have to start again at the stern. Plus side the beautiful view of the ocean, fresh breeze, and being one with nature.

Jeff, greetings from SE Idaho, question how old if the Maersk Idaho to have all the corrosion & rust? i always enjoy your videos and pray for you and the entire crew's safety and wellbeing throughout the world while at sea.
@JeffOnboard3 жыл бұрын
the ships have recently went in for the 55 year ship yard periods, and as ships are close to that date it has been close to 5 years since hull painting etc....3 man deck crews do a great job, but ships are huge so older ships show some need for paint especially as they are close to yard periods.
@wmbomb10793 жыл бұрын
@@JeffOnboard Thank You Jeff for responding back, your explanation makes a lot of sense going into dry dock to have their hulls painted and major maintenance performed all over the ship on a predetermined timeline. Be & Stay Well Jeff. Your fan from SE Idaho
@neilharrison75553 жыл бұрын
Good vid., but I'd comment that your new brackets for the light fittings really should have been at least primered, and preferably top coated before the lights were re-fitted, to ensure they don't start rusting straight away. I used to get fed up doing a job like that, only to find the deck crew were painting the other end of the boat! Therefore I used to take a small roller and a pot of paint with me, to get one coat on before re-fitting the light. Rust and paint, the No.1 and No.2 enemies at sea!

Why are the light brackets not hot dip galv? They would last years.

Random questions again as usual. When you have to work after dinner are you limited to 8 hours a day or are your shifts longer. Do the shifts rotate or always the same one. How do you handle time changes when you set your alarm to get up for work? Etc.
