Good video. I have been a Merchant Mariner for 10 years, and everything he has said is very solid information. I mainly work out of the Gulf of Mexico on ships related to the oilfield like supply, frac, or anchor vessels. If you are not interested in unions, consider working out of the Gulf. Also, if you are considering college at the moment as an engineer, I would consider Maine or Kingspoint over Suny. There is a shortage of work and the shortage isnt something that will change in a month or so. Also keep in mind that as a mariner you can live anywhere you want and you do not have to be contained to just your state. I have American coworkers who live in Brazil and Thailand at the moment.

Things sure have changed! I started with the SIU @ HLSS back in the early 70's, the month I turned 16YO. Back then all you needed was your fire fighting cert, lifeboat ticket. My papers were attached to my SSN and the papers had NO expiration date. Paul Hall, Mike Sacco and Ken Conklin were on site back then. Started with a B book. It used to be that you couldn't get your Merchant docs without sea time and you couldn't get sea time without your Merchant docs!

as a young man who wants to get into maritime work, i do have worries about making such large commitments such as going to school for it, since i am afraid i am looking at the job through rose-tinted glasses. From what I've seen and heard from from experienced mariners online, i've heard many pros and cons and it still sounds appealing to me, but i can never know if it's for me until i get some hands on experience. Although if my notions of the job aren't wrong, i feel like it can be a great way to discipline myself with hard work, and help me appreciate my life more.

I have single sided deafness, basically I can’t hear at all in my right ear. Would that be an issue with regard to passing the physical? My hearing usually isn’t a problem however. I passed a DOT physical for my CDL but I had to get a doctor’s written approval that my hearing wouldn’t interfere with my work. Wondering if it would be similar to that.
@JeffOnboard21 күн бұрын
We have to pass a hearing exam every year and we hear small Beeps in both ears and press a button when we hear it we have to score at least a certain level in this hearing test but I don't know if it is possible to get some type of waiver or not that's what you would have to find out... you could try to call the United States Coast Guard and ask them about that because I think they are the one who would have to get the waiver. I'm not 100% sure, but I think so. Call them and ask

I’m currently in the process of applying to my local community college with the hopes of transferring next year to Cal-Maritime (I have a meeting today with a counselor at Cal-Maritime). I’ll be turning 30 this year, and I know that by the time I graduate, I’ll be in my mid-thirties. Do you believe it is worth it for someone of my age to go through this process? I had SIU on my horizons for a long time, but I didn’t want to start from the bottom. I have been sailing since I was a child (practically grew up on the ocean) and have always wanted a career where I get to do what I love. Lots of things happened throughout my adulthood that forced me to put my goals on hold (being caretaker for my ill family members, COVID, etc…), but with my current circumstances I don’t want to waste anymore of my life wishing and wondering where I could’ve been if I just ignored the noise and went for my dream. My long term goal is to one day be one of the first female pilots in Hawaii.

Hi Jeff Im interested in becoming a USMM. I recently got in contact with SIU to see how to get started with their apprenticeship program. They said they are booked until September 2025. I am working on getting my Twic and MMC in a meanwhile. However I wanted to know what other options I have for both training and maybe even work in the industry while I wait for SIU to be available.

@JeffOnboard8 ай бұрын
I have never worked for MSC but I know one of the big differences is I think you have to work when they want you to work. when and where as opposed to the union you choose when you work. I see more people go from MSC to the union then the opposite. I think they like the freedom of choosing where they work and when, but if you don't mind that I'm sure the benefits and everything are good

I don't have a dentist. Does S.I.U. offer an inhouse dentist, or contracted dentist that works with them? And how much is the dentist to get into S.I.U. apprenticeship? Is it true that I can not join the Union if I do not have my cavities treated by a dentist? I hope it is not exorbitant. Do we still have to take the covid shot to enter a S.I.U.? How much would you say roughly everything cost to enter the S.I.U. apprentice in Piney Point? Excuse my excessive queries, but I am so excited to begin this process.

First of all thank you for your comment and secondly I think a lot of people. When the cobed hit did not want to take the vaccine and just got frustrated with the whole process. I heard that a lot of people just got jobs other places. I was totally against the vaccine but I had to get one just so that I could work. And yes as you mentioned it is a different time and generation now. Call wife of people now days feel more entitled and are willing to do the hard work. Another thing at least for SIU. There are a lot of contracts that just are not good contracts at all. It is a joke. I think a lot of people just realize that it is not worth the money to spend half of their life at sea. They chose to just go do other jobs so they could be around their families.

I know a lot of people got tired of just working ship after ship working for people that made their life miserable.
