Traveling across Russia in the winter, from Kaliningrad to Siberia (Novosibirsk & Kemerovo), answering your questions! Well, that isn't the only reason, we also flew to Siberia to see our family. Julia's Gran, brother and sister are living here in Siberia, in Julia's home city of Kemerovo, the coal mining capital of Russia. Whilst on this epic travel day, including flying 5 hours from Kaliningrad to Novosibirsk & traveling 5 hours overland to Kemerovo, we aim to answer all the questions we get asked about ourselves most often.
Any questions that didn't get answered in this Q & A video, please feel free to put in the comments 🙂

Did you try to get to Siberia from Transnistria and couldn't?. After you said your flight was from the coast to Siberia, I just hoped you weren't going anywhere near the Polish border or Belorussian border. Not saying anything else. Siberia is very much like Saskatchewan, Manitoba in Canada, relatively flat and often -40 °C with winds. It's not always that cold, but it is a "dry" cold. Calgary, Alberta is a high altitude city, so it gets winds like the Foen winds, -10 AM + 10 afternoon.

I only discovered your channel a week ago, but what a breath of fresh air you are! It's wonderful to see two people clearly in love enjoying their travels with such an open approach to meeting new people. You come across as very generous of spirit and your sense of humour (individually and as a couple) is a hugely positive feature of your videos. It's so nice to watch a channel which doesn't manufacture drama (I'm approaching sixty, and don't need any drama any longer) and within which you're open and honest about life's experiences. Congratulations on a great channel!

Agree! Watching Matt & Julia's videos are a great respite from all the 'crap' going on daily that is impossible to control. Julia explained it, and I'm sure Matt agrees, that there is nothing one can do about what is going to happen, so why struggle against it. Wish I had more time to watch all the videos they make.

You both made my day today! You reminded me that joy is found in your midst and you can find it at a cozy kitchen table as much as in traveling the world. It just takes a relish for life and believing that having an open frame of mind makes wherever you are the best place to be at the time. I say this having started out in cold Detroit, Michigan and moved to even colder Montreal, Canada for medical school in my late 30's and while in medical training I was so fortunate to visit St. Petersburg and Tsarskoe Selo and traveled as much as I could to Europe and Asia, and now at age 66 I live in Tucson, Arizona. What I can say about this is I wake up nearly every day with zest for what is before me and ready to enjoy the uniqueness of every place I find myself in. And listening to the two of you talk of your own delight in where travel takes you and how your viewers can feel like your friends - I understand that so well and just love your outlook and the sense of satisfaction I receive from listening to you. Thank you for sharing your lives, I am absorbing the waves of good will you project! Thinking back to my (brief) time in Russia, I now am longing for borscht and smetana and for the amazing assortment of mushrooms of all kinds, but am really nourished by the fellow feeling I am finding on your channel. Thank you!

Julia, I agree with what you said around 16:00 - people watch KZbin to watch fun or inspiring things, not people complaining. But I admire what you said about recognizing that you're a more negative person by nature, and that part of maturing was realizing that you could control that and try to change how you see things. I wish more people were as mature as you are! By the way, those of us who follow along on your journey don't expect you to always be chipper. We want you to feel free to be yourselves and show us how it really is to travel full-time, it's hard. I'm not afraid that you two will wallow in self-pity!😍 P.S., I do try very hard never to skip any of the ads on your channel, because I know that will help keep you on the road!

The two of you do these Q&A's soo well! 👏🏻👏🏻 Thanks for your honesty and openness, for being intimate and real with your responses. I appreciate the innovative idea to integrate the session with documenting your trip to Siberia. Regarding your reference to your KZbin friends/community; I for one has grown very fond of you two ever since you started your KZbin channel. You still are just as "real" as when you kicked off with this venture. You have grown so much, but still stayed true to yourselves over these two years. Enjoy every moment with the family in the winter "coziness" and may the new year bring you even more success and happy travels to share with us! Lots of love! ❤❤ PS: falling into a "long drop" toilet is an unimaginable horror I definitely share with you Julia! 😳🤢🙈😁

Loved this! And Matt I really admire the way you addressed the ‘when are you having children’ question. Me and Mrs G struggled to have a baby and used to get this all the time- people ask it out of habit / social expectation without ever thinking about how it might make the other person feel. It’s such a deeply personal thing to ask someone and I would urge people to think carefully before you do! Side note - we have two beautiful kids now and hope to share our love of travel with them as soon as we can!

I agree with you to an extent but think most people ask without thinking and really don't mean to offend although if someone said we don't have children I would leave it at that and not be asking a load of questions as some nosey people do

I do not comment a lot but I watch I think most every video. I am a retired nurse in the US. Travel in the future for me is likely to be limited and I enjoy all sights you share! There are a lot of things happening in our world, experentially different depending on where you are. I believe though that the world is actually getting smaller and it is the peoples of the world and not the elite that will need to be aware and understand others humanity. I feel you are contributing to this awareness and for that I thank you. Please keep abreast of what may be happening with carbon tax and the potential of limiting travel etc. You are both obviously very bright and resouceful. You do not need to share where it is you might want to settle. There are so many factors to consider. Please give it thought. Intutitevly i feel you will have a child planned or not and so that reality should be factored in. A take care to two beautiful people.

Matt & Julie, I applaud you for potentially not giving in to social norms around the topic of children. I made the conscious decision not to have them and I have lived a wonderfully adventuresome life that would not have been possible otherwise. I enjoy my nieces and nephew but I am not tied done by them especially as they get older and live their own lives. Enjoy your time with Gran and your family, you deserve it! All the best in 2023! I agree with you Julia: my favorite feeling is also being "cozy"! I live in a town at the edge of a desert, so it's 40C or more 4+ months per year, but for a couple of months it goes down to 5C. I love it being "cold" and bundling up under a warm blanket! When I'm lucky enough to be in snow, it's even better (as long as I have the right clothes). The strangest thing packed in a luggage I've heard about is a sedated dog. There was a case of sedated tiger in a suitcase to be put in the cargo of an airplane. Very stupid. In the Canadian prairies, the cold is genrerally a dry cold. On the pacific coast of British Columbia, the cold is a damp cold and, although it's not as cold as the prairies temperature wise, it is more penetrating.

Happy New Year from Ann Arbor Michigan USA. May the new year bring you joy and happiness. So good to see you made it to Grans, and your sisters. I would really love to see a little Matt or Julia, or even a Matt AND Julia traveling with Mom and Dad. 😅😂🤣Wearing their little back packs and pulling their little roller cases! Sure fire way to get thru customs and border crossing quickly! LITTLE ONES CAN MELT THE FROSTIEST HEARTS! (Sorry, just thinking out loud) Keep safe and warm (cozy for Julia) ! Whatever was in your goody bag, glad you made it thru security with it!!!!

Lovely knowing how the both of you together decided to take up travelling. It's honestly inspiring to see since it's something many people of our generation would love to do, yet fear leaving the comfort of our homes / security of our jobs for. Hope to perhaps bump into you someday. Much love from India. P.S: Love the watch Matt! Good to see someone else rocking the old Casio (F-91w ?), especially on their right hand!

As a guy I also used to be hesitant to have kiddos. Now I have 2 of them and I am already sad that they are growing so fast. :D They give you more than take definitely. Also, I think it is possible to travel with kids. Perhaps better to stay in 1 place during the first year but when the baby turns into a toddler it is already a good time to travel. Heck, I have seen people travelling with 3 month old babies so it is doable, but many prefer to stay in one place during the first year.

I dig Winter as well, when it's hot you cannot escape it, but when it's bloody cold outside you can cozy up around a fire somewhere as you say.

The question about children is unbelievably common. What an intrusive question! How do you not tell them to f*** off? I only just recently learned that they can track skipping ads. I’ve been skipping them for years. 😬

Hi, I just discovered your channel. It is great. Your videos in Russia reminds me a lot of Poland, where I used to go very often. You should consider writing travel books, not right now, but maybe in the future? So start making still photos if you don’t already do.

Russia looks amazing. Loved the ice sculptures and the city downtown. Traveled through Turkey on my way to Denmark. New to your channel so thank you for sharing your adventures. Traveling is a lot different now post COVID. Thank you for sharing.

Good luck and thank you. there is a lot of the world that is happily going on about thier lives. You know work, family, sleep, etc. These simplicities of life that are not revealed in the normal communication channels. Siberia has little or no outside coverage as until lately Ukraine, Khazakstan and the like. The west knows most of this via the old Soviet system of which only the negative was shown. seeing these places as being more "real " she we say is a treat. Also seeing how much infrastructure was built in this day though much now in bad shape much in good shape, is interesting. As far as the personal stuff. I am 63 people live their lives. I do not think it is very important for others to know. BTW kids are great BUT nor needed for happiness. I know many who never hav had kids and are happy as heck. Just live as you wish and enjoy life. I have 3 kid two who've families one who dos not. she is very happy so far being an auntie. 27 is not old for kids, 50 is . good luck.

I love watching your travels, you go to different places than normal tourist locations. Many KZbinrs go to London, Paris, Tokyo, Los Angeles… etc, you guys choose the paths less travelled.

It really is best to travel whilst young as once you're old everything is much more limited. We were lucky to have travelled some while younger and then worked for 14 years to set up early retirement and now we're travelling again but way too late really. Want to base out of Turkiye as we're in western Canada and it's a small fortune to travel to EU for us. You're living the life you two!!

Curses! I missed my chance to ask a question. For future Q&As I’ll ask it now. If it hasn’t been already answered. What is the biggest changes or differences in your personalities or mindset that you’ve noticed since starting this journey? Are you different from when you first started and where you are today? Thanks for posting your videos. Happy new year!
