What the hell happened to this guys music? I remember hearing him first do his live version of brother a decade ago and was like "WOW, what a voice and performance" and even went to see him live in Sweden like a total fanboy, then gradually he just transitioned into this sleepy lounge bs that makes every single one of his later songs sound exactly the same or just not interesting at all. Not a fan of the direction what so ever, this sounds like every other indie group out there trying to just "do their thing"

I was at his first concert in Sweden a decade ago, and I don't agree at all. His first music is classic, but this song is right up there.

It appears that you would prefer for him to be stuck in immense pain & turmoil. If that was his reality, I don’t think that we’d have any music at all anymore because (as this song states) he probably wouldn’t be with us. This new music speaks to the healing he is experiencing from the stuff that lead him to write a song like brother. I wish people would stop dragging him back to that. There’s a reason people resonated with brother, but there’s also healing available if you choose to walk the path instead of staying stuck in bitterness and resentment. That’s where he is now. If you watched the propaganda episode about the album, you’d see he doesn’t care about what anyone thinks anymore (which he did for the longest time) & he’s finally proud of himself for what he’s been able to put out into the world coz it’s honest & who he is when everything else has been stripped away. If you don’t like the direction, don’t listen. But if you had a grid for his work prior to brother, you’d be able to see the journey he’s been on, the growth, the sell-outs, the ups & downs that have lead to this & be able to truly appreciate the craftsmanship he has.

I presume you have not bothered to listen to his material prior to Brother/Into the Flame? Anything from Song For, Transition to Colour? The “Sleepy Lounge” vibe has been quite present in his material prior to Brother, and continued through Telluric with Good to be Alone and Why Dream. He took a sonic leap with Rainbow Valley, which is his best album release, but this album is not a regression in his musicality, nor does this sound like “any other indie band”. In fact, I dare say he strongly influenced the Australian independent scene immediately following Brother (and continued his broadening impact with Resolution). Matt is at his best when he’s more contemplative, more emotional. And given in this particular song he is quite literally contemplating his mortality following a health scare, Better Than That is one of his finest ever.
