Best teacher, nice warm voice , smiling as he like what he is doing, seeing poesy in it so you can transmit it as an art form not just a technical stuff. Matt is the one who bring me into learning more survival skill not just for survival but for love of nature!

I like how u refer to bringing the coal so much flame as a baby. I have heard u say it before and hold it up to get its first breath from the breeze. I always tell my son that and give it its first breath from the breeze. Very magical experience! What a creation God gave us to explore! Thanks Matt

Matt, I am literally your BIGGEST fan, I am just a teen and you have seriously inspired me to practice a hunter gatherer life style, and primitive skills, I used to use a ferrocerium rod, but I now use hand drill, and I used to use tarps, but I now build completely primitive shelters, my name is graham also, and when I grow up, I want to live the way you live, except atlatls are illegal in florida, so I use a blowgun

Hey Matt ive never made a friction fire, ferro rods and flint an steel alot. Does the the wood need to be dead wood, reason i ask is green wood often has moisture inside and i would think that would hinder the process. Ive been doing the flint an steel alot, but i want to learn more primitive methods.

Matt, do you know what species of Yucca you are using? Our local Yucca whipplei here in So. Calif is really pithy and soft so it's not good for friction fire. Also the species of Sagebrush you are using if you know it. Thanks.
@MattGrahamEarthSkills
@MattGrahamEarthSkills 7 жыл бұрын
Regarding California Yuccas, the simple answer to your question: You can use the outer harder portions of the stalk for a board. This works great with "Seep willow" which grows everywhere down there around dry creek beds and other areas. You can also uses Seep willow on a Sycamore "root" board for a great long lasting hand drill kit.
@backwoodstrails
@backwoodstrails 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I will have to try the outer portion, seemed too thin but worth a go. Yes, Seep Willow (Baccharis salicfolia) - I call Mule Fat, is my primary spindle material for both hand and bow spindles. Will have to give Sycamore root a try as well, I've used cottonwood and willow with good results but have not tried Sycamore root. Thanks again for the reply.
