I think this is just an interim lens and is intended purely for the cheaper non s-line line up. I think it’s still pretty safe to say that there will be a 35mm 1.2 in due course, because why wouldn’t there be? Really good that there’s a cheaper light capturing prime now which is what we need and this will probably be the best option for the zf in any case!
@BoostLeekdMedia5 ай бұрын
I'm down for a cheaper 35mm F/1.4. It's light, it's cheap and the image quality looks close enough to the 35 1.8S. I'll most likely pick it up because the 35 ART is just too big with the ftz. I think an affordable 1.4 is a good move. No one would be able to tell the difference between the 1.8S and the 1.4 anyways, especially on social media.

I have the same beloved Sigma 35/1.4, still using it with FTZ on my Z6III or Z6II. I was waiting for either Nikon or third parties (Tamron or Sigma) to offer a replacement. Obviously, I didn't want to go to the 35/1.8 option. I never understood Nikon's strategy about trying to attract customers for a new system with expensive F1.8 primes. It holds off people switching from DSLR and their F1.4 primes and young starters who just see F1.8 and not F1.4 or cheaper F1.8. And now this new 35/1.4 might have some corners cut that might regret me buying it. I'm going to rent it and see how it performs compared to the Sigma.

My personal opinion - this was intentional. It could potentially help to boost sales of the Z6III... a nice compliment for those videographers who want that 1.4 but at a slightly more affordable price point, or I could also see this for photographers who find the advantages of having a 1.4 more important, than the very technical refinements in a lens (that most will never be able to identify if not stated in a YT video). Sometimes the "character" that comes with these types of lenses WITHOUT the premium price tag, is preferred. I wouldn't be surprised if the 35mm 1.2 still gets released later on. More options is always a win IMO.

Having invested in all the 1.8 S primes, ie. 35, 50 & 85mm, I won't be changing any of them for something else in the foreseeable future. The aperture is just fine & they are easily light enough to shoot handheld all day, with no problems. If I was starting from scratch, that might be a different story. I would need to try both lenses out on a sunny day & see for myself what the flare & chromatic aberration was like on both lenses. Purple & or green fringing drives me nuts, more than anything. I'd be willing to sacrifice a little more weight & slightly deeper DoF to ensure there was no colour fringing. So long story short, sticking with my 1.8 lenses, thanks very much.

I have both. I like the 1.4 because of the 2/3 stop difference and its impact on shutter speed, especially for the Z8 and my need to shoot in low light. I have not found it to flare. I think the rendition is nice and seems to not have the clinical sharpness of the 1.8 which suits me just fine.

I have the Z 35mm f/1.8 S and it has performed well for me. I see no reason to replace it or add the f/1.4 for 1/3 stop at a bit less weight. I will buy a Z 35mm f/1.2 S if Nikon produces one, mainly for street photography. I believe the reason Nikon released the f/1.4 lens is to provide a lower cost option to pair with the Z6III in order to reach a larger market.
@NickDelDuca5 ай бұрын
Okay this is starting to make sense now. Very smart move from Nikon... the 35 1.4 is lacking in fine details. It's even apparent with the youtube compression. It's quite a bit worse than the 1.8. I think it's great that Nikon released this lens but I think it will eventually become quite a bit cheaper, maybe in the $450-475 range. Camera companies struggle to sell their top dollar 1.2 glass if the have a mid range 1.4 option. So making the 1.4 glass the budget option is a genius marketing move because then people actually have incentive to jump up to their top of the line 1.2 glass.

Had a feeling the 35 would be announced just after the Z6III, but I didn't see 1.4 coming. I just assumed Sigma or Tamron would handle the 1.4's. I do believe we'll still see a 35 1.2, and additional 1.4's coming. So they'll have a standard prime lineup and the 1.8 S line. Similar to two levels of the 2.8 zooms. As someone that's in the market for a 35, I'm kind of not sure which way to go here (a good problem 🙂).

Couldn't agree more, 9:50. I'm in the common sense camp. As a long-time working pro Nikon shooter, I sold my 28 and 85mm f/1.4 AF-D lenses in the early 2000s (after transitioning to digital). Absolutely NO need for f/1.4 in the digital realm. Worked with a three lens kit for years, the 17-35mm AF-S, 50mm f/1.4 AF-D and 80-200mm AF-S. As a corporate and social event shooter and former PJ, I never felt I missed a shot with that kit. Always chuckled at the Canon fanboys buying their ridiculous "behemoth" f/1.2 lenses. Definitely made to extract $$$ out of the dentists and armchair/internet experts.
@caleidoo5 ай бұрын
F1.4 lenses used to be a package where you knew what to expect: better optically, better autofocus, better built. So yes, they were better than F1.8's - which were good and affordable. Well, except for the 50mm F1.4 AF-D which was very soft wide open and the 50mm F1.8G was sharper and faster to focus. It's like Nikon never really could deliver a solid 50/1.4. But yes, it's very confusing and weird to now see expensive "pro level" F1.8's and "cheaper " F1.4 that is still quite expensive because it's ... an F1.4 but still not as expensive as a F1.8 because they cut corners. Nikon decided to change the lens line up logic for a reason we'll never know. I guess, probably because an excellent 35/1.4 would be too big. They couldn't pull off what Sony did - with both their 50mm F1.2 & F1.4 being smaller and... existing. Also ironic how you mention " no need for F1.4" and "canon fanboys and their behemoth f1.2 lenses" when Nikon is now the one spitting out huge F1.2 lenses compared to other mirrorless brands offering the same lenses at a smaller size. I love my 50/1.2 S lens. But every time I take it out the bag I get angry at the clouds for Nikon making it so gigantic. If Nikon offered a good 50/1.4 sooner, I would have gone with that one. Maybe. Or kept my excellent but older Sigma ART 50/1.4 with the dreadful FTZ. Sharp F1.4 (of F1.2) lenses are not about "getting a shot you couldn't take with a F1.8", it's all about subject separation. Especially on weddings & events. And the difference is there, clearly. If you can't see it, the fault is not in the lens.

With a f/1.2 wide-angle lens, the light would typically be hitting the sensor at a variety of angles. While this is fine for film, for the digital sensor, the light needs to be closer to perpendicular to the sensor. With a long lens like the 85mm, that is easier because it is bringing in somewhat perpendicular light from a distance. But with a wide-angle lens, especially with a minimum focus distance around 1', 0.3m, the light is coming from 'wide angles', literally, so it had to be straightened at the beck of the lens. That is tricky.

I've been waiting quite a while for the better 35mm f/1.2 or whatever S line from the roadmap, and I've greatly considered adapting the Sigma 35mm f/1.2 from E mount to Z. If the Nikon rep said that S lens is no longer coming, then I'm incredibly disappointed. -To be clear, I think having a (roughly) 'affordable' fast f/1.4 prime release is great.... just not when it means we don't get a high end professional lens release any more.

Probably to avoid disappointment. They may have been concerned that people would see the Z6 III as a step forward, and a 35 1.4 like this a step backwards in a way, not that the two are exclusive to eachother. I think this is good news and shows what a healthily camera market with competition looks like. My guess this is Nikon's response to: * More inexpensive good compelling 1.8 options from 3rd parties like Vitrox on the wide prime end at reasonable prices * Complaints that the Z mount prices are just at another level above F mount for similar light gathering * And yes size and weight The 1.8 s-line lenses were developed, I am sure, to showcase what the Z mount could do, but now in a mature lens eco-system, at that aperture and price, are really the odd duck. My guess is that over the next 5 years, we will see more 1.4's like this at different focal lengths, the 35 1.2s as a showcase piece and best of the best. What I don't know is over time what will happen to the 1.8s series.

I don't really need 1.4 but considering the 1.8 S generally stays around $800 or so, this might be a slightly better buy (although the 1.8 S does occasionally go on sale for up to $200 off at times, so I may also just wait until the end of the year to see if any sales come up). But it nice to know that they are doing a few "budget" lenses like this as the price of the 35 1.8 S has always driven me away from buying one. It's a lens I'd use, but probably not that often (less often than my 50 or 24-120 at least). While this is sort of what I've been asking for (a cheaper, possibly smaller 35mm) I'd still like to see a pancake 35mm even if it 's a 2.8 or 3.5 lens to go with the Zf/Zfc. But this one might do as well. I'm just going to wait for formal reviews and comparisons...

This is almost certainly a Tamron lens, or made with significant Tamron components.
@pseudoryx92845 ай бұрын
There is no Tamron 35mm 1.4 for mirrorless - their last one was for DSLR. Sigma has one, though, but it is a hefty beast completely opposite from this lens. Any "Tamron-made" comment is completely baseless accusation until we have a patent file that shows both Tamron and Nikon signatures on it (like with the 200-500). People are just jumping to conclusion after the budget 2.8 trio adopted Tamron's optical formula. This lens has a unique design with very large rear glass element right to the lens mount - almost the same size as the rear element of Noct. I am leaning toward this being an in-house design that really capitalize on the unique advantage that Z-mount is offering. Heck, it is *smaller* than the Sony 35mm GM with minimal focus breathing.
@UnconventionalReasoning5 ай бұрын
@@pseudoryx9284 This is not a "baseless accusation", this is an acknowledgement of the collaboration agreement Nikon and Tamron have for the Z system. When Tamron and Nikon representative are standing 10 feet apart, and they both nod when asked if Tamron made the Nikon Z 28-75mm f/2.8, it stops being "just jumping to conclusion".

A bit of a surprise release this and its going to divide many. Personally I am not in the market for a top end f1.2 35mm lens, this f1.4 would suit my wallet and shooting scenarios perfectly fine. As it is I already have the 35 f1.8S so I wont be rushing out to buy this f1.4 just to get 2/3 stop extra. My feeling is this lens is more geared towards videographer's given they make mention of well controlled breathing. Its size and weight make it more gimbal friendly too. It's price will also helps those entering Nikon's system to build up their lens collection. I know those hoping for a 35mm f1.2S are disappointed but the release of this f1.4 doesn't mean that Nikon have canned its development, I'm sure its lurking and will see an eventual release. 😉

But still awesome little lense 1.4 for 599 , if they could make the 50 the same way that would be incredible (typcly 50's are cheaper so 50 1.4 at 399/499 imagine that!) , I would ditch my beloved 50 1.2 for something smaller, love it but it's a fire hydrant. I wonder what would happen/happned to the 35 1.2 , is it cancled ?

Nikon Ricci actually says that the 35mm S that was on the roadmap, is a separate lens. Meaning that it may actually still come out. Which I guess is nice but… Nikon, is this really the priority right now? How a zoom longer than the 70-180, but lighter than the 100-400? Or one or two primes between 135 and 400mm? Or a fish-eye? And I’m not even interested in half these lenses.

Valid disclaimers. Let's not forget that the "number" in "f/number" says nothing about how fast a lens is. We need the T-value for that. Next to flare (recognisable artefacts), I would be interested to see glare (overal loss of contrast through reflective casts in the lens), chromatic aberrations, as well as corner sharpness relative to image center. As Depth of Field depends on the Circle of Confusion, a side by side comparison could shed light on the actual DoF of this lens - sharper gives smaller CoC gives shallower DoF (ceteris paribus)

So what? Nikon have been designing Tamron lenses in the past 50 years or so. It's a matter of positioning, business, etc. When Nikon put their own "looks" to it, have put their name on it, then you get Nikon support and future compatibility in the case of firmware upgrades. There will be some more brand value in the price, but that will be marginal.

My 40mm f2 is doing everything I need it for. If I didn't have it and wanted a 35 mm I would probably opt for the f1.8 because of the coatings. I hate chromatic aberration and I think you are going to find it with the f1.4 when you take it outside and torture it. With this wide of a lens the difference in bokeh is not going to be great and one STM focus motor ought to be fine. With the Zf I am not worried about an extra 2/3 stop in ISO. I just used my old F mount 50mm f1.4 G lens for the first time in ages and chromatic aberrtion was unacceptable and I will sell it.

For me the 35mm 1.4 is a big disappointment. Due to its compactness, it is certainly worth it for some users, but I expected more. If Nikon really does release a 35mm 1.2 S lens in the near future, they'd better communicate that. I'm tired of hoping and speculating. For me it's one of the most important focal lengths and I'm now so upset from waiting that I'm actually thinking about changing the system. If the 1.4 were an S lens I would probably say ok but both 35mm are not good enough for different reasons. I would like to have a 1.2 or at least 1.4 premium lens even though it will be heavy. Sometimes Nikon does great things but unfortunately they are too often a cause for disappointment.

If I could have my way, and I know maybe it was not possible business-wise, I would have a cheaper 35mm 1.8 say $400, and a $2000 35mm 1.2 like the sigma or a $1400 1.4 if the market had enough of the big lenses. Nikon needs affordable lenses to compete with Sony. The current status is confusing. Maybe the 1.2 is still coming and they will remove the 1.8 for the market but it's delayed for some market or engineering reason.

Having options is good, I know the F/1.4 is a selling point, but it is still not that cheap a lens (£650 in the uk, £150 cheaper than the F/1.8) Think it would have turned heads if they released a compact 35mm F/2 lens for £400, yet I guess in these days of everything costing more, £650 is cheap for a first party lens (even if it is a budget range) I think a 35mm F/1.2 will happen and it'll be good but heavy and expensive.
