I am so 'Martha' especially in my days as an investigator, the African culture hospitality mode kicked in. I'd arranged my 4 children sitting on the floor by the sofa which had been reserved for the Elders. Of course they ignored the sofa and promptly sat on the floor with the children. What manner of men are these I'd asked myself - so not African! They taught me to appreciate "the better part" kindly and lovingly by simply halting their teaching every time I got up to check on the stove even though I'd urged them to continue saying I could still hear from the kitchen. Raised an African-Muslim I have never known teaching halted for a woman. Aside from feeling my presence was valued, I quickly got hooked on the beautiful feeling in the living room whenever they came and didn't want to leave. Not totally abandoning my African culture, I simply signed up for them to have dinner after the discussions 😀

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Part 1of this weeks discussion: April 17th-April 23. Of great importance and thought are your remarks about "forgiveness," especially forgiving ourselves and others. Forgiveness can set a person free from the bondage of embitterment and hate. I feel that the real problem arises when people other than oneself (and sometimes people of faith), continaully remind a person of their flaws, faults, and mistakes in life. Your lesson was a great reminder to refrain from "judging other people" as well. Thank you for your time and dedication to the presentation of these weekly lessons.

I loved how you took each “character” in the Good Samaritan story and looked into more detail on each one’s responsibility. For instance-making the mule’s job to carry the load and weight of the injured man-and you asking-“how many of us have been the mule?” Loved that thoughtfulness.

Thank you so much for your wonderful insights and object lesson, they are perfect! I used the talent conversion example with my teenagers and asked them to calculate the numbers themselves 😅 They were all surprised how much the debt was! Then, when reading how the servant wasn't forgiving of others, my daughter's reaction while reading this passage was pricelss because her tone explained how unfair this guy was, whixh meant she saw the injustice and hypocrisy. This parable allowed me to remind the kids of experiences we lived through when mercy was extended to us a family and when we also extended the same mercy to others. I am so thankful to you for helping my family learn the scriptures and enjoy them. Looking forward to next week's 😊

My mind gravitated to this as a scripture to share to a loved one who feels his choices have wrecked his life permanently and is struggling carrying that burden. I appreciate the Savior using financial debt as an analogy for sin. Using the example of 10,000 talents shows us some measure of his ability and willingness to forgive enormous mistakes and sins beyond our mortal assumption of His tolerance. It enables us to have hope and faith all our sins can be forgiven too. I deeply appreciate when the debtor says he will pay it all back the king doesn’t ask for him to payback even a little or put him on a payment plan for the rest of his life…he is forgiven of all the debt in that moment and given a fresh start and new lease on life.

I have heard the parable of the Good Samaritan a thousand times. I have thought of myself in the role of trying to be like the Samaritan and being represented by the man who was left for dead and even as the Levite or priest. NEVER have I thought of myself as an innkeeper. My mind is blown. I'm a mother of 4, I serve where I can in my ward and community and family...I've never considered the Second Coming in the light of the Samaritan man (Jesus) coming again to the Innkeeper (me). I'm still processing this. Thank you very much!

That is a profound statement from someone about abuse. I have grandchildren who now hate the gospel because of the teachings of obeying your parents. I have tried really hard to turn them back to reading their scriptures and saying their prayers. So far, I have not been able to change their minds in any way. It's a frightening thing to recover from as many of these children take these hurts to their graves - what to do is always on my mind. I will keep praying and putting their names on the prayer roll.😭

At a Stake Conference a few years ago the main speaker related this parable and suggested we think about it with Christ in eachof the roles, as the wounded man, Samaritan, and Innkeeper. I appreciate your addition of Christ carrying us as the Samaratin's beast carried the wounded man. When I thought of Christ as the Innkeeper it made me think that the Samaratin had a relationship with the Innkeeper for the Innkeeper to trust him to pay him any more that would be owed and the Samaratin trusted the Innkeeper to help. Likewise we need to have a relationship with Christ so we know Him and trust Him and He trusts us to do His work.

Matthew 18 1. At this time, some of the disciples came to Jesus and asked him, who shall be the highest rank in the kingdom of above. 2. And Jesus called a small child unto him and sat him near him, 3. and he said, truly, if you do not convert (Acts 3:19; Acts 2:38 John 8:31-36; Ecclesiastes 7:29) and become as a small child (reborn), there is no possibility for you to enter into the kingdom of above. (1 Peter 2:1-2; Romans 9:11; John 3:3) 4. Whoever shall humble himself in this way, to become as a small child (pure - innocent), he shall be elevated into the kingdom of above. (Isaiah 66:2; Ecclesiastes 7:29) 5. Whoever shall receive the message of one of these coming in my name, he shall receive me. (be converted and receive the holy spirit of Christ) (Acts 2:38; Acts 3:19) 6. But whoever of these that believe on me and again choose to offend me, it would be better for him if a large millstone were hung around his neck and he be thrown into the deepest sea. (2 Peter 2:20-22; Hebrews 10:26-27; Titus 2:11-12; Psalms 19:13; Luke 17:1) 7. Woe unto all in the world that commit such offenses against me, though it is necessary that temptations occur, yet woe to the one that commits an offense against me. (Numbers 15:28-30; 1 John 5:16-17) 8. Therefore, if your hand or your foot cause you to do that which is evil, cut it off and throw it far from you; For it is better for you to enter into eternal life maimed or crippled, than for you to have two hands and two feet but be cast into the eternal fire. 9. If your eye causes you to commit an offense against me, pluck it out and throw it far from you; For it is better for you to have only one eye when entering into eternal life, than for you to have both eyes and be thrown into the eternal lake of fire. (Matthew 5:29; Mark 9:47; Hebrews 9:14) 10. See that no little ones (converts) bring an offense against me, because I tell you, the angels above see everything and bring news of it before the Father above. (Hebrews 4:13; Romans 2:6-10; Revelation 20:12-15) 11. Understand that the son of man has come to save those that have been lost. Taken from: The Eternal Book of Truth, The New Testament Scriptures

Being a person who helps those who have suffered abuse, I enjoyed that you pointed out that abuse survivors should take advantage of the Savior's Atonement. Many abuse survivors ask, "Why do I need the Atonement. I didn't do anything. I'm the victim." It is comforting to be able to explain to them that the Savior "suffered for our pains and suffering" as well as our sins. We can ask Heavenly Father for the Savior's Atonement to be applied to our pain and suffering, which will greatly reduce our trauma, as we work through our recovery process. Thank you for confirming that this principal is true!

I have always loved, though, to discover in the dialogue that Martha had with Jesus when he came to pay his respects on account of Lazarus's death. She is the one who ran to meet Him, and the one to tell Jesus the same answer the Apostle Peter once gave Him: I KNOW YOU ARE THE SON OF GOD. This woman always prompts to serve, was the Possessor of a Spiritual Treasure, that according to Jesus, nor flesh or blood can give, but only her Heavenly Father who is in Heaven. THE PERSONAL REVELATION THAT JESUS WAS THE SON OF GOD. Martha was a great daughter of God, in my understanding.

I always enjoy these videos! It was fascinating to hear how to compare ourselves to the characters in the story of the Good Samaritan. My only caution is that after 53 years of being a convert, it does get wearying to be the guinea pig while brothers and sisters blunder around, supposedly trying to learn their calling. None of us does a perfect job but it's disheartening to be told, "Oh, don't take offense. That's just the way I am." Not an acceptable excuse. How many more people are they going to hurt because they see no need to be more sensitive or more careful?

Today gold is measured in Troy ounces and pounds, not Imperial ounces and pounds. While an Imperial ounce = 28.3495 grams and is 1/16 of an Imperial pound; a Troy ounce = 31.103 grams and is 1/12 of a Troy pound. While a Troy ounce is heavier, an Imperial pound weighs more than a Troy pound-453.592 grams vs. only 373.236 grams. This is FYI because it’s still a lot of money regardless.

So Martha chooses the better part too and nobody gets anything to eat ? Maybe there was food there and. Martha was overdoing it or worrying about things that didn’t matter like the pillows on the couch etc . Putting that into the equation helps me . Must be more we are supposed to mentally add in otherwise leaves the door open for much abuse . Has to be a logical balance . My guess is Martha was going overboard doing “extra” that wasn’t needed . Whereas Mary secured the basics and was ready for more important things .
@scripturecentralofficial Жыл бұрын
Your interpretation of the story of Mary and Martha in Luke 10:38-42 definitely offers a thoughtful perspective! The story tells us that Martha was "cumbered about much serving," while Mary chose to sit at Jesus' feet and listen to His teachings. Jesus gently reminded Martha that Mary had chosen the "better part," which refers to focusing on His words and the spiritual nourishment He provides. It's essential to maintain balance in life, and you raise an interesting point about Martha potentially going overboard in her serving. The story reminds us that, while service and taking care of others is important, we shouldn't forget to nurture our spiritual well-being and listen to the teachings of Jesus Christ. There are various ways to interpret these stories in the scriptures, and your personal revelation and perspective can provide valuable insight into their meaning. It's great that you're engaging with the scriptures and seeking to understand its teachings more deeply! 😊

Whilst appreciating possible cultural explaination as to why the Priest and Levite might have ignored the unfortunate fellow, can one assume Jesus himself of the custom,, did not consider this sufficiently valid to excuse their behaviour. Otherwise why pit them against the Samaritan in a parable imploring compassion and service?
