At six minute you see the black gears turning the big wheel like a crank? The crank was patented so to avoid paying a royalties, I think they were called novelty fees, Newcomen had to invent a new kind of crank which was a two gears in contact instead. Patents held up the advance of technology in this specific case.

If an engine or pump provides Steam Power, then it's a Steam Engine or a Steam Pump, ( James Watt's machines ). If a pump provides Atmospheric Power, then it's an Atmospheric Pump ( Thomas Newcomen's machines ).

The Newcomen Steam Engine didn't exist, it was an Atmospheric Pump. It supplied Atmospheric Power, a whole 10psi max. James Watt didn't improve it, it couldn't be improved. James Watt dumped Newcomen's Atmospheric Power for Steam Power. He had to invent a new engine to achieve this, the world's first practical Steam Engine. Then? The Industrial Revolution!
