The thing that makes me laugh is that people watch Downton Abbey thinking it's realistic. No way in real life would Lady Mary come downstairs half dressed to address the servants in such a casual way. She would have summoned Carson upstairs and asked him to ask the servants downstairs about the letter.

@@lepolhart3242 and I suppose you would know how a lady would do her work by your studies of what you think they write. What assumptions are you to know? Did you read "Dear diary, today like most days, I must ask my servants to help, but I am in my undergarments and therefore it will prove useless in desire to address them; I must ask the Chauffeur to come around so that I may enquire the butler on the recent problem."

@@artdecotimes2942 I'm going by what the historians in articles and documentaries I've seen have said. I've also been to many guided tours of historical houses in the UK (as I live there) and the tour guides told us how the upper classes and their servants lived. Everything was formal and there were clear barriers between the family and their servants which were not crossed. These large houses had bells in each room which would be rung and were connected to the servants hall so the servants would be called up to whatever room the family were in.

Susanne Stein that’s why it’s a shock that if all people daisy was The lynchpin to it all. She is so overlooked and unremarkable. She just happened to be tending to things, and she is supposed to be invisible when she works. But it also shows that Lavinia was someone who noticed her and asked her help. On both sides it is a beautiful thing of happenstance and that Lavinia was a kind soul that daisy also wanted to help. Even the Sven of them discovering who posted it daisy was not in the room at all. She’s overlooked even by the staff who knows it’s her job to be in that room. But mrs Hughes asking why she had to tell her that she had posted it shows that there is a chain of command and communication that often misses the small things like the scullery maid talking with Lavinia and her asking her just to put her mail in the post as a simple favour would be overlooked.

It is unlikely, but it’s still somewhat plausible. Lavinia probably knew there was a chance she might not recover from her illness and naturally wanted to be sure her father knew all the details of what had happened. Also, Lavinia’s father knew Matthew well enough to realize that he’d probably feel guilty; since we never met him, we can assume from his letter that he was the kind of person who left no stone unturned. Still, Downton is a show that you watch for high quality entertainment, not logic. There are very few TV shows that have much logic, after all.

that's exactly why, Mary acts like real people in life, with a nice and emotional side, but also a temper and selfish side. what's important here is that she's honest and straight with her personality, she doesn't lie nor try to be kinder than she looks, she believes what she thinks and express it without being shy. Mary's point of view is sometimes not very humane and kindness, but it is always true and useful in real life, she is not stupidly confident.

It's not 1950 anymore. Virtually all women are employed, although they still face disproportionate amounts of house work, the "second shift" when they come home, unlike men. After Matthew was presented as being in the right in his courtship of Mary, Tom taught Sybil about socialism and Irish occupation and tells off Mary in the last episode, and Robert constantly tells of Isobel, Rosamund and Miss Bunting, I can't imagine how you got to this perspective about Downton Abbey.
