Pianist Matthew Fries is a winner of the Great American Jazz Piano Competition and a long-time collaborator with Curtis Stigers. He teaches piano at Western Michigan University.
Here, he shows Jeremy how he uses an exercise by Rafael Joseffy to practice moving up and down the piano and discusses how it has relaxed his technique and helps his improvisation.

Ok, so now I can super-size my exercises, mind you I have the Hanon Piano Exercise Book which in all fairness...good but boring. So after I pick up your books...the next one up is Joseffy. BTW I love how you creatively switch up the exercises to make it interesting. Thank you both...

Hi Jeremy, I'm guessing you're playing on a acoustic piano. How do the notes you play get transferred from the acoustic to the visual score? I'd really like to have something like this to record my improvisations on if this software translates your acoustic piano playing to a visual score. Thanks if you can let me know 🙂

Hi Steve! I'm using the One Piano Hi-Lite bar across the keys. I wouldn't recommend using it for recording - it's got a big lag and isn't super accurate. I'd probably get a MIDI keyboard to record...or a Disklavier! Sorry!

@@JeremySiskind I read his story. Interesting. I wasn’t familiar to him. One of his American mentors (Tausig) has a good exercise Book too. There are some similarities but Rafael has his interesting rhythmic tricks.
