My grandma did this to my mom and today they have a mom-daughter relationship. I don't think it's cool in any way for a MIL to do so to her son's partner. Why be petty when you can be nice? Thank goodness, my MIL has always been sweet to me and I pay her back by including her, calling, giving her updates and everything. She deserves it.

Definitely. I mean, I get that families are close but there needs to be boundaries. Adult children needs to establish boundaries and stay strong in those boundaries. @@ceciliawade exactly. There are plenty of situations just like this where the man’s mother ends up pushing his partner away. Those men just happen to not be Mathew McConaughey. There are ways to determine whether or not a person your child is dating is good for them without being a toxic boy mom and making their partner feel unwelcome or attacked. Like I said, glad they had the outcome they did but it usually doesn’t end up like this. The partner usually leaves or the relationship stays toxic forever.

Thank goodness my MIL is not only kind and loving, but she's not a childish woman who feels she needs to compete with her son's love interest. This is not an uplifting story, its a pathetic story. No woman should bully another woman just to "test" her. Grow up and stop being stewards of patriarchy. All family tests each other. Gawd, if you think your mil is difficult, imagine how your spouse feels. You're either part of the family or you're not. If you're part of the family then you have to fight like family. The fights can sometimes be mean and dirty, but at the end of the day family protect each other no matter what. I fight with my in-laws just as I would fight with my siblings, they're family now, so I don't hold back and I expect them to do the same.
