He wanted his legacy to be that he cared & could help others (which he did). His drugs were not a secret for him, in fact, he was glad others knew. ❤He understood a lot and was able to help A LOT of others. He said if someone asked for help he could say “yes, I CAN help you, “ because he’d been through it.

I have family and friends who is addicted to or who have died from alcohol and it's really horrible to witness someone you love go from a beautiful looking, great personality, charming and fun person to looks being distorted, mean, sloppy, health issues, balance is off, etc. The family can try to support and give help but it's truly up to the person to do the work to get clean. I met Matthew Perry a few years ago in Cali and he was charming to talk to. I felt like I was talking to a friend and not a celeb. We talked for at least 40-45 mins. He even offered to pay for my food I had ordered since he felt he held me up. I told him I should pay for his food for making me laugh so hard. I will never forget that day or him. RIP Matty 😥🕊️🙏🏽

Above all, condolences to Matthew’s parents, brothers, sisters, extended family and friends. Matthew’s last 5 years is what he wants to be remembered by: staying clean and sober, helping others stay sober and writing a compelling book on the absolute horror of addiction…which is 100 percent progressive. Matthew’s first introduction to recovery was 2001 …he picked up ….and then 18 rehabs and all the rest began. Active addiction is a progressive, horrific disease….and the terrifying inability to stop becomes all consuming. Matthew’s recovery and making that his daily priority far exceeds any Hollywood accolade - and he knew that - which is why he wants to be remembered -- first and foremost - for helping others trying to get clean and sober. Matthew: you will continue to carry the message of recovery from the other side. Blessings, Matthew and all love. ✨✨❤❤✨✨

shout out to my blonde man on here for talking about how getting sober does not mean there are not lasting health consequences. One of the saddest things I’ve seen in my life is a human that I met in their sobriety, who is genuinely such a kind and transformed human, having to deal with what looks to be liver, failure and heart issues. He just became a father. He is so present and hard-working, he truly stays clear of the things that one’s held him back. In and of itself, it almost feels like a reason to relapse, but he just hold strong and lives with the consequences of choices that he made. Truly one of the most beautiful in person examples of human resiliency that I’ve seen. So yeah, thank you to my blonde man for talking about that because I feel like that’s some thing that Matthew Perry would value his death being used for… Education on addiction.

I dont care what anyone says until youve had an addiction you wouldnt understand how difficult it is. You are a prisoner in your own mind. Similar to schizophrenia. Once you are hooked its your voice saying: just one more wont hurt, I will stop tomorrow, If i go to the other shop noone will judge me, I need a drink right now, hope I catch the shop before it closes, I shouldn't drink anymore.... & the cycle begins again. A lot of people failed to realize that alcohol and drug addictions are strongholds of the enemy, and it takes the power of God through prayer to go into the spiritual realm to defeat and cast out those demonic spirits that's controlling a person mind and body in their addictions. Nobody can defeat evil spirits on their own because It's a spiritual battle. We're not fighting against flesh and blood (people in the natural), we're fighting against principalities, wickedness in high places (in the spirit realm).

I appreciated this guest’s words on addiction. I’m in recovery myself, 2years+4months, and also an opiate addict. It creeps up on people, even people who are careful. A prescription can lead to years of abuse, and just because you stop using, it doesn’t take away the damage to your body, it doesn’t kill the cravings, it doesn’t kill the fear if you ever need to use again (for opiate users in particular, this is a very real fear because opiates are used to treat pain, used in and after surgery, etc) and it doesn’t stop your self-destructive tendencies. I admired Matthew Perry for always being so open and honest about his battles with addiction and recovery, and his willingness to keep fighting even after relapses. And like I said, I appreciate having a guest here to explain addiction to people who might not understand that it truly is a disease, recognized by the medical field, and not a choice. Thank you for taking time to honor Matthew Perry, and being so respectful.

Matthew Perry seemed to have struggled throughout most of his adult life with addiction in one form or another. It's a long, relentless battle that I know full well, as my own fight continues. I am so, so sad that Matthew has passed away. There was such a lot more that I'd expected to see and hear from him over the oncoming years, a marvelous talent that he was. I feel his part as Chandler in Friends was a character which the series couldn't have gone too long without him appearing, and I'll remain one of the huge fans of that show. I'm just so, totally gutted that he's gone, and will forever be reminded of this loss every time I watch episodes of Friends in future. The pain's over, and SO's the dreadful war, Matty. It's your time to enjoy the end to your suffering and eternal peace from now on. You're owed it, big guy! God bless Matthew Perry.

Wow, James a beautiful tribute, so poignant and well written. Thank you. I pray that you will be liberated from your struggles, as I can't even imagine a hell of it because I took opiates for most of my life, having a broken back, and many failed surgeries, but I was blessed that I never to become addicted, and after I was finally healed after 30 years, it was great to no longer be enslaved by them. People don't realize that you're enslaved one way or another, by opiates, either through addiction or necessity, and it doesn't matter if u become addicted or not, people actually the medical community, who has no understanding whatsoever of opioids, but they are just pushers incentivized to put people on these pills, will see you that way. Our society really needs to change the way we look at people who take opioids and be kinder! James, I wish you all the best in your struggle, as you are a brave man. I was wondering about this, and a lot of evidence of my life supports, This is true, but I was wondering what you think, anybody, I knew who took opioids, that never drank or did recreational drugs, didn't seem to get addicted, but those who did take drugs, recreationally, and drink almost always became addicted, and I think that was my saving grace that I never became addicted because I never drank or did drugs recreationally. Also, finally the medical industry revealed that people who are truly in pain, never get high because the pain absorbs a high, and that is true because I never got high. I'm just grateful because on top of my broken back and torturous pain, that was all I could deal with, and addiction would've just probably done me in, but the torment of my broken back nearly did. Believe it or not, I learned how to pray through manifestation, as in the lost book of Thomas, and it is what, healed my broken back & a terminal illness, so maybe, check it out, and I hope it provides the miracle. I think it will, for you. Believe me, I tried every form of prayer, but this worked almost instantaneously. It truly is a miracle, and I see why it was kept hidden! Be blessed & much love! 💜🥰🙏

I agree, well said James. And, I suspect that the hot tub will play a role in what may have been a heart attack-related drowning or he fell asleep and drowned. He was probably very tired from having played pickleball and simply let the heat soothe his battered body, what does the heat do, in my case, I'd need someone to watch me because I have a weird reaction to heat of any sort, but hot tubs will put me to sleep in 10-15 minutes. I have lupus, it causes me to become physically ill if I try to lay out in the sun for 30 minutes because if I stretch it to 45 minutes I vomit everywhere and then sleep for hours. But, it doesn't matter. A beautiful man who shared so much more than he had to left this earth. The stars will be brighter with one more Angel in Heaven, rest easy Matthew, your illness is not what defines you, you fought an unseen enemy like a valiant Warrior! We won't let them drag you down, you've got millions of fans who can organize easily these days, and if a show about you turns into some sanctimonious dick who insists on staying on that route, let your fans protect you as we couldn't in life, boycott the station, the show, it's usually a famous person and I don't think she would, but even if it's frickin Oprah Winfrey herself, she's got her "OWN" place and even she can be stopped from doing this. I'm hopeful that she'll be just as respectful to Matthew Perry's passing as she was with Lisa Marie Presley. Just because a person has the gift to make you laugh and they become extremely wealthy or as in Lisa's case, born famous and could also sing. When their lives end tragically these "buzzards" fly from wherever or if they're eagles who've earned riches enough to film from their backyard, enough is enough, stop picking over their lives like carrion! Prayers for you, James. Keep fighting, Fight Like Perry did, I know it's daily and sometimes minute by minute, but you've got the heart of a fighter, just like Matthew Perry!

I am a recovering alcoholic and I have been sober for over four years. Everyday it is a struggle. Everyday it gets a little better but it is still hard. When you drink to numb your pain and feelings, you have created a monster. I love being sober but I miss going out and enjoying a beer or a glass of wine. I think the hardest thing is that alcohol is everywhere. TV is full of people drinking. Go to the grocery store and it’s on every isle and end cap. I am however strong and will not give in to the cravings or desires because I don’t have a shut off button. I will drink till I pass out. I was so tired of not remembering and having to say I’m sorry for the things I said and did. Alcohol and drugs are everywhere and I’m so sad that so many people are victims to it. Matthews fight is done and he will be missed.

Once he got on meth, it totally made him mad. He had hallucinations, was bipolarity etc. He was found by a dumpster behind a restaurant with a fentanyl lethal dose. We talked about how it could happen. Like rolling the dice. It's been since August 2021 that I am left with a nightmare I can't get out of. Families are devastated by illegal drug overdoses forever. It's a parent's worst call that you know can happen any day or hour. It totally takes a piece of your heart and you will never be the same.I hope I can help someone gain the strength to push through their addiction. I know my son would want that. I've recently started making a special memory box that addicts can look at designed by kids, friends, strangers, etc and know they are worth everything to Christ and someone took the time to make it especially for them with encouragement and love. They can make it to a place of peace and drug free.

He was clean & sober! And, in the past two years, he helped so many that struggled with substance abuse just as he had been. What I find wonderful is that Jennifer Aniston knew what he was going through, and has stayed with him, calling & checking on him, and getting together with him since the show ended. She said that she knew he needed support, and no matter what, she would never abandon one of the best friends she had ever had. It is truly heartbreaking that he passed away at such a young age, knowing he had so much more to give. Heart disease is something I am personally dealing with, as I'm in need of a transplant. So, I understand that struggling with health problems is hell. We need to quit focusing on his substance abuse, and focus on the man he was. He was kind, caring, and had so much more to give. And, he will be greatly missed.

She was put on a transplant list, but by that time her kidneys were failing, her heart was failing. I spent the last days of her life at the hospital with her. It was one of the hardest, yet most precious weeks of my life. She was one of the most joyful, loving, optimistic people I’ve ever known, and it killed me to see what alcohol had done to her. My husband is a recovering alcoholic. I nearly left him after almost 50 years together because of his drinking. Addiction is a horrible HORRIBLE disease. This is such a tragedy.
