Being Scottish i was brought up with alcohol in a big way. When my Mum died my heavy drinking turned into a dis-ease. I was lost, fear of death, trying to cope with my Mums death and the vision of finding her in a horrible way. My brother and i were the same. After a year he stopped and i could'nt. I had become a hopeless helpless disgrace to humanity. You talk about will power, yes, i could stop for short spells..3 months was my longest without any help. I went to see the Doctor and he gave me Diazepam and triazalam. Wow, i thought i had my answer. Long long story and 10 detoxes later i am now sober since 1991 but i will never be completely off the small amount of diazepam as i fit without them now. It is a problem with opiates. I only got sober because the tenth detox i knew i had to go to AA and listen because i had tried before and decided it was not for me. It was always on the back of my mind that AA must work because i had the people in the rooms sober. They had something in their eyes that i mistook for drugs. 2 years later i realized it was their spirit i seen in their eyes. My spirit had gone with alcohol and prescription drugs. I was lucky in 1992 as we still could get councilling. I will never turn another drug/ alcoholic away as it is my duty to help those who are still suffering. STEP 12.. I will always be there to help anyone with this very controversial subject. I had horrendous problems from childhood that i everntually faced as i remembered them. A lot of addicts have got problems from childhood, some have never had a problem. I choose to call drug users and alcoholics people with a DIS-EASE. We always felt unhappy and different as children.. Why are people so anti drugs when we quite happily allow our children to be prescribed amphetamine for ADHD from as young as 4... Ages of children diagnosed with ADHD www.theguardian.com/society/2017/jan/23/youngest-children-in-class-more-likely-to-get-adhd-medication-study-says What our health systems answer ois in UK.. It's horrific!! www.drugs.com/adderall.html I alsolost my suffering alcoholic son Christopher to suicide in 2010. He was a beautiful boy who managed to go to work every day. He was crying out for help after he lost his lisence for drink driving while he was blacked out. Christopher was 23 years old and the system let him down when he was going to all the help he could get. No one cared.. People should not be so judgemental as we never know what lays ahead of us.. Also why do we give heroine addicts methadrone which is more addictive than heroine. We know the users end up using both..It is a worldwide epidemic.. www.statnews.com/2017/06/19/synthetic-opioids-fentanyl-china/

Just a little perspective for people who cant understand. I dont know if it should be classified as a disease or not. really it dont even matter. But the 1st time I abused opiates I truly felt as if I had been looking for this feeling my entire life up until that point. The power of that is impossible to overstate. Like a person born with a disability all of a sudden made whole, its that powerful. A false feeling of being 100% content. its just too powerful to understand.

DSdouble I'm probably gonna get hate for what I'm about to say... but I want to anyways. A close friend of mine, Christian as I am, told us ones about a guy who had done drugs for 10 years. Idk when in that period he did heavy drugs, maybe the whole time, idk, but at some point he did that. He stopped after just one night and he said it was because of God's presense. He was in a Christian meeting/at a Christian event (which I didn't attend) and there was prayer, singing, etc., and he felt it. He then said that's the feeling drugs are trying to imitate. He said that's the real deal and drugs are trying to give the feeling of wholeness, safety, security, the things that you describe, that drugs are trying to give these feelings where the real deal actually is God. I don't say that much, cause, well - you hear how crazy it sounds - but althought I've never done drugs being in God's presense when you feel it so thick and so there is what I'd imagine feeling high is. It's sooooo amazing. It's so insane. It's so awesome. Idk if you'd believe me, or if anyone would, but I'm leaving this comment here anyways.

It is a disease and is also related to genetics and how someone is brought up, depression plays a huge significant part in alcoholism. The more you actually drink the more depressed you actually become its a vicious circle, many addicts suffer epileptic seizures especially when coming off alcohol. I sadly lost my ex gay partner Mark aged 46 on the 27th of December 2012 after battling alcohol all of his life, he many relapses and actually was sober for 6 years after rehab. His parents were alcoholic and his brother all died before him, he had to deal with six deaths in his family in six months. Its a serious illness that can hit anyone at any time in their life.

I drank alcohol for 25 years, looking back it became my medication I had terrible anxiety and alcohol gave me confidence. It was legal so I thought I wasn’t doing anything wrong. Eventually it was ruining my life and wasn’t making me happy so I decided one New Years Eve to pack it all in, it will be 26 years on New Years Day next year in 2024 that I have touched a drop of alcohol. I’m PROOF that it if you want it bad enough you can quit alcohol. You can get help from others BUT the only one that can do it is YOU!!!!! YOU have to decide that YOU are quitting, nobody else can do it for you, YOU have to help YOURSELF.

Alcoholism stems from depression and anxiety
@Johnphilips1234
@Johnphilips1234 9 жыл бұрын
It can also cause it. I never had depression before I started drinking nor have I had any since I got sober but when I was drinking hard I was suicidal. For me it stemmed from the euphoria alcohol gave me then the alcohol made me depressed and anxious so then I started drinking to cure that and the cycle repeated.

This phrase leads to misunderstanding. There are many depressed and anxious people who don't do drugs at all.

My first experience with booze and drugs was when I was in high school. The whole idea was to get as drunk/high as possible. There was really nothing social about it. If one starts like that, the pattern will likely hold, more or less, throughout life. It's not a disease. It is a choice.

personally I find unless you've been high and you hurt someone or damage property or where driving under the influence only then can you be charged with a crime, and that if you are a serious addict then jail is not where you should go to, its rehab, and far too often we have non-violent users or people who consume weed or any drug harmlessly who are stigmatized and thrown in jail because it simply makes the justice system roll along easily and give people huge amounts of money.

We must have seen two different videos. I just remember Matthew getting upset set, calling Peter Santa Clause, and saying that "his life" was objective evidence.

Actually, I think the doctor would be like, "I got your back on this one, Matthew." Truth is I saw the confirmation with Hitchens and at first someone rationally arguing it using their own experience an an example (sometimes using your own life experiences helps) and also interjecting a lot of fact in there (he's correct about the whole "Addiction as a mental illness" argument; I have friends who work with addicts). What I saw with the "Santa" remark was someone who was obviously getting very annoyed by Hitchens' remarks (as he would say in future interviews) and trying to do anything to not punch out the guy on live television. Truth is he's not the first person that Hitchens has done this too. If you look on KZbin, you can find video of Hitchens having the same heated debate with Russell Brand about almost the same exact issue.

What you are saying about Brand and Hitchens is inaccurate. They never debated the evidence supporting addiction. And I don't think anyone can watch the Perry video and not think Perry looks completely foolish, unless you are a fan of his from FRIENDS, or you just want to support the popular side of addiction is a disease. Now stop wasting my time.

I don't know but I did see something ugly there. And if you don't agree with me on anything I said, then fine, that's your choice. I'm sticking to my guns and that's the end of it. You see things your way, I see them mine. PS. I'd pay good money to see all three of them in the same room.

It’s something I don’t get. 13 years ago, from when I was 18 - 23. I enjoyed being out with friends, and having a drink. But one rule I always enforced, was no shots. I have a phobia of vomiting, so I won’t do shots. After say 3 pints of beer on a night out back then, I’d be done. I also didn’t like hangovers. So I’d know my limit, and stick to it. I’ve never had this compulsion to keep drinking. Nowadays, I don’t really drink. It’s too expensive. I find one pot of beer will give me a headache, and it’s something I can go without. Can someone explain to me, what goes on in an alcoholic’s mind? Don’t you worry about vomiting? Being hungover? Not being in control of your actions?
