I was nearly 12 years old when Matthew was brutally murdered. I am a straight woman, even as a small child I couldn't grasp why anyone would hurt someone else for being who they are. I cried to my mother begging her to explain to me why someone would do this. Every single Time I see Matthews handsome face it brings back those same feelings of confusion. How could anyone be so cruel?

I clicked on the like but as I cry. Matt means so much to me because I came out just days before I heard about him. I cried so hard that my family worried about me. Through my tears I kept asking 'why?' 'why?' Why would anybody do that a young gay man? Why would anybody do that to anybody? All these years latter, I still cry my eyes out for Matt. Actually, am crying now. God bless his sweet memory!

It's essential we remember. We’ve come so far, but there is much more to do - so much more. However, all must be done with civility. Now, more than ever, we must extend the hand of equality to our friends, neighbors, coworkers and many others, regardless of gender, color of skin, creed, religion or sexual orientation.

I've been reading and watching a lot about Matt's story lately. It makes me sad. Seeing pictures of him and hearing all the good things people say about him make me feel like I lost a lifelong friend. I actually came out as gay to my family about a month ago as a tribute to him. I felt since he died for his sexuality it wasn't right for me to hide mine as though it's something to be ashamed of.
@erikbunty20165 жыл бұрын
I will say that, we as fallible humans, don't really need to learn how to hate. It comes naturally, given our inherent propensity to choose evil. We need to learn how to love and teach others to do the same. I will admit that I struggle with anger and hate at different times, for circumstances known to a select few.

Had we the internet in 1955, Emmett Till would also be in the same situation against segregation and racism. Consequently, his murder personified the changes happening in the United States at the time (the massive migration of the descendants of slaves out of the South, where they could not vote, to the large cities of the North, where they could vote). It spurred the first civil rights act in 1957, which laid the foundation of the ones in 1964 and 1965.

TO MY GAY FRIENDS AND EVERYONE---ALWAYS BE STRONG AND ALWAYS LOVE YOURSELF!!! :) :) :) October 10, 2012 at 9:05 AM I would like to tell every single gay person and everyone in the United States and in the world, be STRONG! There is nothing wrong with you, it is them--- The small minority of mis-informed people who are listening to powerful political bigots who want to keep their cash flow going by hate. They do this by mis-interpreting the True God of Love. These people are Focus on the Family, The Family Research Council and others. Please educate everyone you know always about these religious radicals. The True God is about love, compassion and helping others, not a hateful God that they should not be preaching to and about!

Matt was awkward? I always thought he looked kind of like a model. I think there's much more to this story than the original version of it, though. When I go back and read and listen to everything from '98 until now, I see a different story unraveling -- one that makes me think of Edward Norton's line after he destroys the blond kid's face in Fight Club.
