Matthew… I’m the crazy lady who stopped you after rehearsal in Charleston a couple nights ago. I simply must tell you again how beautiful your voice is. My son (Andrew) is the spot light guy for you! He is a rising senior at the University of Michigan, majoring in orchestral performance. He’s a clarinetist! He was selected for an apprenticeship there at Spoleto. Please be careful with the high notes, you have to protect them, not only making them in the throat, but hold the larynx a little more down with your head straight and the sound will be perfect! Very nice sound for sure already!!!!!!!

Your space closes off on closed vowels like [i], [u] and [y], which gets pretty clunky as you shift between those and more open vowels which are more clear and spacious sounding. That’s my only critique and probably why you weren’t a winner. Generally you have a beautiful sound and a really nice approach to your passaggio. And what an exciting top. Hope to hear more!

evan abeling thanks for the input and the compliments! Considering closed vowels like [i, u, and y] are “closed” and I’m singing as close to pure vowels as possible it makes sense right? The space is in the pharynx for those vowels not in front. I would say assuming the reason I didn’t win being that would be a slight reach. You need to take careful comparison to those who won and why they won. If you’d like to talk about it in person I’d much prefer.

Yep, you can hear it from the first "e" he sang. I was like "he is just a high baritone and will sing a 0,002 s, throaty high notes or will have a big, big passagggio to cross to get to the high notes". Anyway i'm stuggling at it as well, doing pretty well on open vovels of "a" and "o", but my "e" is very crappy and i probably won't ever be able to do anything with it.
