What blows my mind is Matthew produced this song which to me, is a complete 180 from Break My Stride. He also ditched the mustache and became something completely different for Bouncin’ Off The Walls. I think it’s pretty cool. I thoroughly enjoy the versatility.

I think there is something to that, video wise and musically and lyrically. Most "hits" are not usually the best song by the given artist because a hit is often dumbed down to the masses and doesn't have much complicated music or lyrics. Compare Joe Jackson's Stepping Out with You Can't Get What You Want Til You Know What you Want or Tears For Fears most famous hits with their lesser known song Working Hour in terms of musical complexity.

People liked “Break My Stride” more than they liked his music in general. It also didn’t help that his relationship with his record company CEO soured by the second album because Wilder apparently refused to allow any of the songwriters and producers the label CEO wanted Wilder to sing with. The label head pretty much didn’t even try to have the album promoted and it contributed to the single and album’s failure.
@shyman9911 күн бұрын
@@RocStarr913 - If the label head didn't even try to promote the album, then how do you explain the money they spent on creating this video?
@RocStarr91311 күн бұрын
@@shyman99 Perhaps, they only spent money on the music video and television promotion and not getting a radio push?
@shyman9910 күн бұрын
@@RocStarr913 - All they can do is send promo 45s to radio stations. Which they did. They can't pay radio stations to play songs since it is against the law. Matthew would have needed to make a radio station tour and calling up DJs. Let's be honest by saying Matthew was too old, did not have the Duran Duran pretty boy look, and therefore was fighting an uphill battle to get his music heard in the 80s. I think that was one of the reasons why the record company chose to avoid a promo video for "Break My Stride". They really pushed the music video for "The Kids American" and even then, the record wasn't able to make the top 30. Very frustrating for an artist, but sadly, that's the music business.
@RocStarr91310 күн бұрын
@ Wilder has said that the guy who ran the record label he was on, Private I, Joe Isgro, told him that he alone was hugely instrumental in getting all the most important radio stations in America to play “Break My Stride” in the first place.

On this day in 1984 {November 3rd} Matthew Wilder performed "Bouncin' Off The Walls" on the ABC-TV Saturday-afternoon program, 'American Bandstand'... At the time "Bouncin' Off The Walls" was at position #58 on Billboard's Top 100 chart, the week before it had peaked at #52 and it spent nine weeks on the Top 100... And on the same 'Bandstand' show he also performed "Hey Little Girl", it was track three of side one on his second studio album, 'Bouncin' Off The Walls'... The New York City native had two other Top 100 records, "Break My Stride" {#5 in 1983} and "The Kid's American" {#33 in 1984}... Matthew Weiner will celebrate his 67th birthday in two months on January 24th, 2020...

He has said he basically was made and broken by record company politics. The head of his record label engaged in basically payola practices to play “Break My Stride” and that’s what got the ball rolling on it being a hit single. Then, when he recorded his second album, his record label head tried to convince him to use his producers and songwriters to contribute songs to the album and Wilder said no. He said the CEO got angry with him and basically didn’t even try to promote the second album and Wilder ended up getting dropped not long after this was made.
