@@MatthewHeiskell How does it handle at freeway speeds? 70+ MPH ?
@MatthewHeiskell2 жыл бұрын
It feels fine even at highway speed because it has such a low center of mass. The shape of the boxer engine allows it to be mounted really low, that’s why Porsche uses it. Also, it’s a unibody car, so the center of mass is lower than a body on frame vehicle. You can delete the rear sway bar with any sacrifice, but deleting the front one makes a bit of difference. Luckily, you can just remove the endlinks and go for a test drive. A lot of people just delete the rear one, but you can test it and reconnect them if you don’t like it.

love the video:) i have an SH forester lifted an inch and a half with A/T KO2's... and a fully built stage 2+ motor paired with an sti trans+brakes
@MatthewHeiskell2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! 😁 Wow, you've got quite the setup! I think that 1.5" lift is the sweet spot. It provides a good bit of extra ground clearance with almost ZERO extra stress on the suspension and steering components. I had KO2s for 2.5 years, they were super tough and durable, but they were not a good match for my Subaru's weight. I'm jealous of your engine and trans though, is that the 6 speed manual?! Have you seen Might Car Mods recent video where they put the STi guts into a Levorg?

@@Itswagonfall2 Wow, if that's the issue then I think that you already have the ideal tire, the KO2. They are designed for larger heavier trucks, but it sounds like you need that extra durability and more. I don't know of a tire that can handle abuse better than a KO2. Also, it sounds like you've built a rally car, maybe someone in that area will know of a really durable tire.

@vitalyglebochkin11 ай бұрын
Great job! This video will save tons of money and a lot of time for everyone who decides to go off-road on a city vehicle. Even if it's not Subaru, all the principles remain the same. I would highly recommend buying a deflator to deflate tires, air compressor with at least 20 gal/min air performance and high jack with off-road base and high-lift kit. At low pressure (0.5-0.7 bar) you will get incredible car performance on soft mud, sand or snow. Big wheels have a lot of air, so to get an efficient air compressor for tires is a must. And, in case you lose the tire, you can lift the car directly by the wheel by using a high jack with a high-lift kit. Greetingsfrom lovers of Russian off-road!

Great video and much appreciated. Intrugued by the seatbelt alarm disable. Not sure if your model has the stop/start issue or lane keeping assistbeeping, but is there also anyway to disable those you know of. It seems crazy it's not at least an option to turn them off permanently, or at least for say your own identified driver setting. Cheers, RJ, Australia
@MatthewHeiskell Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Good questions! You can use this little device to automatically disable the start/stop function. amzn.to/3LS5s6c It is non-permanent and reversible too. The lane departure beeps can turned off by holding the corresponding button above your head. This one actually has a memory, so it will stay off. Finally, with the car running and parked, you can use the buttons on the steering wheel to silence and reduce the volume of some other beeps. Now the only time that my car beeps is when I'm actively using lane keep assist and the lines on the road become too difficult for the computer to recognize. That is the ONLY time it beeps now.

Mathew, great video. Been a Subaru fan forever, used to have 1998 GT Wagon, sold it with 350K miles on it, they need to bring that car back. We just traded in a 2016 Chevy Loaded Tahoe this past weekend for 2021 Subaru Touring Outback. My wife has had hip replacement and knee surgery and has trouble getting the higher Tahoe. We made a fair deal. The Outback only had 14,500 miles on it and it was a swap on car values and she paid a few dealership add on fees, to my dismay, but she is happy. I am looking forward to getting back into a Subaru and having some fun. Alrerady have 2007 Tundra Crew max. 2000 Isuzu Trooper and 1994 Landrover Discovery. Looking forward to getting out in her car and showing her what it can do just in case she finds herself in a challenging situation she can approach it with confidence.

Thanks Fred! I really appreciate you taking the time to write this nice message! That would be an excellent vehicle choice! I would suggest that you upsize the tires to 245/65R17 all terrains and add all three Primitive Racing skidplates and you’re good to go! Maybe a 1” spacer lift too. You can get one of those for Sub $200 from ADF. Technically the Ironman suspension is better than the upgraded Wilderness suspension, but not enough to justify the cost. The Wilderness already has a transmission cooler. It also has exclusive lower gearing in the front and rear diffs, sooo helpful off road. Don’t let Subaru deceive you, that metal factory skid plate is a joke. Super thin. Let me know if you have any questions as you go! Oh! One last thing! The bar has already paid off because it saved my Forester from being towed after a kangaroo strike on my recent holiday road trip. Im not sure i would make anymore future mods apart from AT tyres because it would invalidate my 7 year vehicle warranty. Are you worried about your Forester warranty given your extensive mods ?
@MatthewHeiskell3 жыл бұрын
Oh cool! I’m glad to hear that you got the roo bar BEFORE the hit! If I have a catastrophic engine or transmission failure, I’ll put most of the things back to stock before taking it to the dealership 😄

Do you drive with out the sway bars? Have you tried this with the sway bars, what’s that RTI?
@MatthewHeiskell2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is my only vehicle and both sway bars are completely gone. I do not know the RTI with the sway bars, but I know that they limit even the stock suspension, so you won't be getting very much out of the Ironman with them connected.

idk about riding your "torque converter" with that cvt... sweet build

Thanks! Yeah, that makes the transmission get hot, but the transmission cooler prevents it from getting too hot. The scan gauge is so useful for monitoring it. I heard that you can set alarms to beep when certain temps are reached.

I have a 2020 Forester Limited with a push button start. Any advice for silencing the seat belt alarm? Thanks for the information! Great video!!
@MatthewHeiskell2 жыл бұрын
Cool, the trick still works, but you method of “turning the ignition on” is a little different. I think that you tap the start button twice to turn the ignition on, do the seatbelt 20 times, then hold the brake and press and hold the start button.
@mikeaikens78232 жыл бұрын
@@MatthewHeiskell Thanks! I'll give that a try. We always wear the seat belts, but when you're slow to get them on, that beep gets annoying.

You did amazing work hacking away at that approach angle. I was all onboard, this is a dope build until I saw the three letters of death C V T. I forgot they don't even offer the manual anymore.
@MatthewHeiskell3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, a lot of people hate the CVTs too. They got a bad reputation because the early ones were crappy, but in 2014 they switch to a stronger, more reliable version. I've been thrashing mine pretty hard and it is holding up well. I just wish the lowest ratio was a little lower. But I always have my winch as a backup to get me moving again.

Yes cvt is dumb for off or on road. Especially for anyone that actually likes driving. Weird this all the Subaru in Brazil all seem to be automatic...very strange because most cars here are manual. I miss my Baja 5speed turbo

@MatthewHeiskell I was thinking of purchasing the same set of TA KO2 tires. Do you recommend getting them without a lift kit? I didn't want to spend much more than the set of tires and rims. I'll be honest I don't off-road my forester. I love the look of that tire setup.
@MatthewHeiskell10 ай бұрын
I ran those KO2s for 2.5 years. They are a terrible match for a Subaru. Too heavy and the rubber is too hard because they are designed for heavier vehicles. Now I have Nomad Grapplers. They are lighter and quieter and were designed specifically for CUVs, so they still perform just as well off road. I suggest that you get those instead. If you’re using the stock wheels, then you can fit my size without a lift. 245/65R17

Yeah, gearing was my only complaint with it, but then Subaru release the Wilderness trim, they changed the diff gears and the CVT ratio range. This gave it 26% lower gear. I got one about 3 months ago. It’s makes a huge difference on steep hills and at high altitudes.

I'm really interested in how you fooled the sensor for the active grill shutters. After I unplugged mine and plugged them back in the check engine light kept popping up no matter how many times I cleared it. Do you think the shutters are just out of sync? Would you mind going into greater detail on how your 3D printed mod works? Is it just a piece that goes on where the servo is? How is that able to fool the computer? Did it turn off the check engine light for good? If you would be willing to make a short video about this it would be super super helpful. Thanks!
@MatthewHeiskell3 жыл бұрын
Sorry, I don't have time to make a video about it, but I will explain how it works. The 3D printed piece interfaces with the shape of the servo housing to limit the travel to 90 degrees. The computer and servo are very smart. The servo is continuous rotation and it is clutched too. It is looking to move 90 degrees then get stopped. I don't think that the initial orientation is critical. The computer will "learn". The servo is very strong too. I had to get the cog piece professionally printed because it could not handle the strength of the servo. But you should get both pieces professionally printed from shapeways. Install them. Disconnect the car's battery to reset the computer, and you should be good to go forever. This hack has been working perfectly on mine for about 2 years.
