4 Easy Baiting Techniques To Improve Your CATCH RATE

I’m going to share 4 baiting tactics that I use during a week session using particle, pellets and boilies.
This is my second spring fishing session at Beausoleil and in this video, I’m going to talk about how I apply bait to catch carp. There are many different baiting techniques and the trick is to know what technique to use when. Your first baiting tactic should always be to start with small traps of bait to get the first bite. The next tactic to use is what I call Pacman baiting where you dot your baits in a line, 10 baits one way, 10 baits the other way, to force the carp to move from bait to bait. It’s a very effective technique to target carp in the margins. Then you can start applying particle. I use a mix of whole wheat and cracked corn (maïs concassé), with salt, spices and garlic. When you use particle for baiting, it’s really useful to know whether the carp are eating it or not, how much and where. In a clear lake, that’s relatively easy to do but on a cloudy lake like Beausoleil, it’s much harder. I’ve developed my own technique to check whether the carp have eaten or not. I use a 4 ft piece of tube and I use it to suck up the lake bottom and I can see whether there are any bits of particle left.
It’s actually the first time in 10 years I’m fishing with particle at Beausoleil and it’s been very successful. I think that’s partly down to rigs. A supple braided double bottom bait rig like the one I use when boilie fishing isn’t the best. The mono D rig and the multi rig popup have done very well over particle because they are robust, they can be kicked around by the carp and they can re-set.
Time of year for particle fishing is an important factor. We’re in April right now, the oxygen levels in the lake are very good. Oxygen levels decrease as water temperatures increase so in the summer, the oxygen levels are lower so it’s not a good idea to pile a lot of bait in the lake.
The objective of the baiting strategy is to get the carp to make a mistake. A great tactic for doing that is what I call a multi trap. You can do it with a bait boat or rowing boat and with boilies, pellets or particle. You take a scoop of your mix and pour it off on your spot, and do it again 4,5 or even 10 times. They’re all identical traps and in one of them, you’re going to place your rig. The carp are going to come along, discover a trap at a time, move to the next one. With this baiting strategy, you build the carp’s confidence step by step. Fishing with particle en masse is a very effective strategy, but don’t think it’s the magic bullet to catch loads of carp. If you can’t catch them over small traps or a spread of baits, piling a lot of particle is not going to help.
For Beausoleil, I am going to continue to recommend using boilie and pellets for your baiting strategy, especially if it’s your first trip to the venue.

Looooool he sure as hell made it clear he wanted back in he's home, I like to allow them time to recover once landed ( while I rebait & re cast ) before I weigh & take pics- but allowing them that 5 mins in the sling means exactly what you just got- @ 10,14 🤣, a very lively fish that let's you know its not happy, I just think it's better fish care allowing them that little time to recover ( un-hooked in the sling ( plus yiu can get a bait back out working - building up their confidence is key & you have showed it working in full affect 👏👏👏 Brilliant work Matthew ( as always) you're definitely one of my fave's I've been looking at lakes in France ( to purchase) but they vary so much from 40k for a water that needs lots of work ? No problem being a general builder contractor for many many years ( thats all im saying age wise 🙄) all the way up to a ongoing lake/business- I intend to have a few months in France in 22 & I will be visiting your beautiful water ( just going to look & see when you have a available single spot failing room for 3-4 of us- thanks for all the information you share & explain clearly- easy the best run French water ive found that has a KZbin channel, well done sir & thank you ...Lee 🎣🎣

Hi Tony, thanks very much for commenting. Glad you like the video and the venue. I grew up near Tewkesbury fishing the Avon and the Severn. After a long break, I spent some time on Horseshoe and Linear then in 2008 went to Abbey lakes with some of the lads from Avid and that changed everything for me. I moved to France and bought Beausoleil in 2011 along with my French wife :) I absolutely love it here :) Hope you enjoy some nice fishing where you are.

Would you make a video on the process of landing a double take safely
@matthewcollinsangler
@matthewcollinsangler Жыл бұрын
Hi Peter, thanks very much for your suggestion. The best advice I can give you is to be super organised. Everything in my swim and my setup has to be in the right place so that day or night I can lay my hands on whatever I need in a flash. You should also get yourself a second net. You don’t have to spend big bucks. Make sure you have a bank stick for each net so that you can securely pin the landing net to the ground after each capture. Make sure your rod setup is very secure and use a semi tight clutch. This means that the rod can play the other carp while you are busy landing the other. If double takes are a possibility then don’t fish near snags with both rods. Hope that advice helps. Best of luck! Matt.

Hi Dan, ah that's great to hear mate. Everyone is really feeling it so it's nice to be able to do a little bit to help. The lake is 4 acres and has over 80 x 25lbs+ carp. Most are 30s with 8 x 40s now. We also have 20 homegrown carp that are low/mid doubles. Then there are 20 massive catfish that average 85lbs. There are 4 known 100lbs cats. We also have loads of roach, some perch, pike and zander for balance. Depths range from 3 to 8 ft and the bottom is a mix of sand, gravel, clay and silt with very little weed growth. If you want to find out more about the lake, you can check out: www.frenchcarpandcats.com/fishing/lake-overview/. Anything else, just shout 😊 Cheers, Matt.

Hi mate cracking as all the rest but can u give a newbie a few tips on baiting for day ticket waters for Autumn and winter as I want to conti I'd getting a few night sessions in over the colder m9nths cheers
@matthewcollinsangler
@matthewcollinsangler 3 жыл бұрын
Hi mate, well, a lot of anglers believe that during the autumn the carp will be on a massive binge as they want to eat as much as they can before the winter. Therefore, they think that piling a load of bait is the thing to do. I don’t agree with this approach. I can see at my lake that the carp actually slow down in their feeding routine as they can’t digest the same amount as they can in the summer, and that’s purely because the water temperature is decreasing. So, if you’re doing quick overnighters and day sessions in the autumn, into the winter, all you need are small traps in the right place at the right time. My go to method is always PVA in various forms (or even a single if I’m fishing at long range). It could be stringers or little mesh bags or solid bags. It doesn't really matter that much. All you need to do is pick two or three spots and set your traps. Try and avoid the temptation to move these traps about every few hours (as many do) as that will usually work against you. If you see any carpy signs, obviously you need to act on that, but have the confidence to leave them in play and give it your best shot. Every recast is only damaging the hook on the retrieve anyway. Many times I’ve cast to a showing fish, left the rig in place the rest of the day, and through the night and then had a pickup at breakfast the next morning. Hope that helps and check out my PVA video for more tips and ideas: kzbin.info/www/bejne/baqTZ2mbZrZpjs0 Cheers, Matt.

@@matthewcollinsangler cheers mate just making u a few mesh bags of cc Moore krill bag mix and crushed boilie . But also got some krill boilies in glug to just spread a few free offerings over the top . Going put one out on mesh , one solid bag . And then try the Pac man method you mentioned in the margin as only on a small day ticket water . Thanks again for in depth reply and help
@matthewcollinsangler
@matthewcollinsangler 3 жыл бұрын
@@truckinghell1655 Hi mate, I wouldn't over flavour any freebies myself but I do like to glug the hook bait. You want to be a bit careful making up PVA mesh bags in advance as, in certain situations, the PVA can absorb oils and take a lot longer to dissolve (especially as the water temperature drops). The last thing you want is melted PVA costing you a bite. You can test one in a bucket or in shallow water where you can see what's going on :) Great to hear that you're trying the Pacman approach, it's been used successfully here for years! Do let us know how you get on. Cheers, Matt.

Hello Matthew, what is pac-man baiting?? Regards Leo van Opstal
@matthewcollinsangler
@matthewcollinsangler Жыл бұрын
Hi Leo, the name comes from a very old computer game from the 1980s! It’s a tactic that a guest at the lake invented. It simply means dotting individual baits in a line along a margin in order to force the carp to move from bait to bait to bait. This can make them easier to catch. Hope that helps, regards, Matt.
