Fun fact: Napoleon also lost in Russia, because the Russian's had the ability to burn everything the french would need for the march (such as crops, ammunition etc.) and even set Moscow ablaze while the french was garrisoned in the city. So funny enough Napoleon's men froze and burned.

You should've mentioned the battle of the crater. During the civil war, union troops detonated a 170 foot long tunnel of explosive barrels under a confederate fort. The union troops charged at the rubble of the fort. They ran into the crater the explosives had created and were now trapped. Union troops trying to exit the crater by climbing were picked off by the remaining confederate soldiers. It was basically a turkey shoot. Every union soldier was killed in the battle of the crater. The confederates ended up winning a battle that the union had 10:1 by a simple mistake.

During World War 2, the french were so afraid germany were going to invade, they built many defences on their border to stop them from coming through, but then the germans simply went through belgium to get to france and invade, simply going around the french defence as if they were going in a back door. This plan was known as the Schlieffen plan
@mathiasskardalmaas2292
@mathiasskardalmaas2292 7 жыл бұрын
Except the Schlieffen Plan was from WWI, not WWI... besides, the Schlieffen plan of WWI failed, as they encountered much heavier resistance than expected in the Netherlands. This allowed the French to establish heavy fortifications beofre the Germans could take Paris. The plan was revised following the loss of WWI, and the Germans came up with the plan of invading through the Ardennes
@MrDuckFIN
@MrDuckFIN 7 жыл бұрын
The basis from the Schlieffen plan was still there. They still went through the Netherlands and Belgium.

Of course the French and Belgians argued about which way to extend the Marginot line, as Belgium wanted it on their northern border. Due to this debate, it was not ready when the Germans arrived.

Avery Bondeson actually invading Russia isn't that big of a deal as long as you plan ahead of time, have trucks with tracks so they don't get stuck in the mud in the spring and fall, and pack winter gear FFS. Hitler only failed because his supply lines were shit because all of his trucks got stuck in the mud and by time winter rolled around he didn't have the proper supplies delivered because of it. P.S. not a Hitler supporter, just a fan of history.

Immediately prior to the first battle of Manassas- I think the Yankees call it Bull Run... One of Gen. Robert E Lee's lieutenants, who was an avid cigar smoker, accidentally left behind the exact confederate troop movement plans when he had wrapped those secret plans around three cigars; due to Murphy's Law this package accidentally fell out of his bag, only to be found by one of the Union commander's lieutenants. Most historians agree that due to circumstances the South should have won an easy and decisive victory, but due to the leaked troop movements, it ended in a draw. Loose lips, sink ships.

A military blunder I think would fit in well in this list are all the times Admiral Yi Sun-sin was stripped of his rank. Seriously, this man was a naval genius (totally undefeated) but due to politics was demoted several times in his military career. The biggest screw up I feel though occurred when the government accused him of treason because he refused to send his fleet into what appeared to be an obvious trap set up by the Japanese. He was tortured and nearly killed during this time. Meanwhile, Wŏn Kyun was put in charge of Yi's fleet and sadly ended up sailing them into disaster. Of the 150 or so ships that went into the attack against the Japanese naval fleet only 12 came back. So what happened next? Why the king reinstated Yi. And Yi then took those few ships and men that survived and went off to attack the Japanese fleet again. It was 12 V.S. about 133. AND YI WON. Also ALL of the ships stayed afloat. So... yeah... Yi was practically a Naval God yet was demoted several times. Why? How? It's like having the winning card in your hand then discarding it. It's interesting to think how much more he could have accomplished had he kept his rank the entirety of his career.

I really enjoy your videos, they're amazing but I have something to say about the "starting" of World War 1. You see, there were crises all around the world and many countries weren't happy with their current state. Pressure was put on everyone and some (like the Austro-Hungarians) were already preparing for war (because they wanted to expend their territories, mostly). So, the point is that the assassination of Ferdinand was just an EXCUSE for starting WWI, NOT THE REASON. As a matter of fact, previous crises could've started it, but the countries weren't ready enough. Thank you for your time. 😊

Greetings from the Royal Military College of Canada! Great video overall, but a few things that bothered me: 1. There are little to no historians who say the ultimate cause of WWI was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. The sutra-Hungarian Empire was looking for any excuse to invade Serbia and the rest of the Balkans. The true cause of the war is a lot more complex, having more to do with alliances, nationalism, militarism, failed diplomacy and the combination of several other factors. 2. Incorrect. That "gate", was the rear entrance, which the Ottomans only had access to b/c they were able to transport ships to the waters flanking the city, an incredible feat of engineering and logistics. Also, none of this really matters, since the city couldn't possibly have held out for very long, given that it was the last piece of Byzantine territory. 3. Okay, first of all, for both sides, the 1939 Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact was simply a way to buy time before war inevitably broke out. hitler, and all of Germany for that matter, had been planning to invade Russia for well, forever. it was their end game to destroy bolshevism, enslave the slavic peoples and acquire lebensraum (living space). All previous ops and campaigns had been meant to set up Barbarossa. Hitler and the German High Command of course knew about the dangers of the Russian winter, and that's why they put all their efforts into creating a plan they thought would guarantee them victory before winter came. This was a dream at best. Hitler was in fact quite aware of Napoleon's campaigns in 1812, but he believed Napoleon lost b/c he had put too much emphasis on seizing Moscow. This is incorrect, and so is the assumption that the weather did in Napoleon. It was hunger for the most part. Napoleon was used to not having much of a supply line b/c he and his army could normally live off the land they conquered. This was not the case in Russia, as the Russians had used a scorched earth policy to starve Napoleon into retreating. With no food and no clear objectives, Napoleon had no choice but to turn around and go home, or face total defeat.

Great work, as usual! According to the late historian Brigadier SLA Marshall, whose book "World War I" is considered one of the best authorities on the conflict, even though Franz Ferdinand was a nationalist and did not look favorably upon the Slavic peoples that lived within the Austro-Hungarian Empire, he was one of the coolest heads within the government. If he had lived, he might have turned Emperor Franz Josef to a path of peace and disrupted the Foreign Minister's designs for a war.

I'm sure it's been put somewhere in the 8000+ comments, but you missed the battle of Myeongnyang. Japan underestimated the remains of Korea's navy and was routed by only 13 ships. The Japanese had around 130 warships and some 200+ others. That became a turning point in that particular invasion that ended in Japan's defeat that time.

WWI could not have been avoided, as the nationalist buildup in the Balkans, imperialist tendencies, rising militarization, a the Alliance system that made it so any little thing could have set off any of the countries. It just happens to be that Franz Ferdinand's assassination was the event that set off Austria-Hungary to declare war on Serbia, causing Russia to also enter the war in defense of Serbia, but also mobilizing in Germany as they were allied with Austria-Hungary. Then Germany declared war on France, invaded through Belgium in the Schlieffen Plan, upsetting Britain who then entered. WWI was going to happen no matter what.

IceVines Actually, there were many ways WW1 could have been avoided. Russia could have not mobilized(which they came very close to doing before tsar Nicholas II's ego kicked in), Serbia could have accepted Austria's ultimatum(which wasn't as bad as you might think), or Germany could have just not gone through with the old and flawed schliffen plan.

Byzantium The great I think that all of these actions could have occurred, yet there would still be agitation causing tension. For instance, if Serbia accepted the ultimatum there would still be a great deal of agitation since the black hand wasn't affiliated with the Serbian government or Russia.

Jovan Mitrić actually to be honest because the invasion of Mongols , Russia is what it is today. The Mongols invaded Kieven Russ, which wasn’t really Russia at the time but more of 13 Slavic kingdoms scattered around Eastern Europe. Because the Mongols invaded Kieven Russ , the Slavs formed a huge uprising in what today is known Moscow and overthrown the Mongols which then Formed itself as the Russian empire, and from there the Empire just kept growing.

Also the German invasion of Belgium in WWI, the British would have stayed neutral and Germany could have won WWI before the British could have turned the tide of the war
@LordDim1
@LordDim1 6 жыл бұрын
Thomas Simard No, this is not really true. Germany needed to move through Belgium to bypass French border fortifications, which made a potential German offensive against the French on the German-French border impossible. The German plan to quickly move through Belgium and strike France in the north almost succeeded, and the Germans would have taken Paris and forced a French capitulation only a few months into the war had it not been for the miracle of the Marne.

You could invade Russia, just make sure your troops have adequate supplies, including cold weather supplies, use diesel instead of gasoline engines, and go for strategic targets first instead of symbolic ones like Leningrad and Stalingrad

Mirza9000 .-. That too. Destroying Russia would be a matter of moving as quickly as possible. Getting bogged down in cities would destroy armies. Use air power on cities, while your armies chew up Russian land and troops
