With just two notes played by Matt, I'm instantly in a good mood - this synth is unbelievably versatile, delivering an amazing sound. The motorized knobs? Pure genius! I also love the subtle psychology behind this video, because now, all I want is to dive into some slappy, bassy Level 42 tunes!

Love it! Flexible, punchy, a ton of character, and will easily cut through a mix. I also love the 'retro' look..reminds me of the earliest computer terminals in the 1970s & first personal computers in the 70s & 80s. Considering the tech, I think 2400 is a good price. A 6-voice Prophet-6 is now $3500 (tho I got mine when it was 2800). This sounds every bit as good, but lacks the dual effects and arpeggiator. This has better mod matrix, and the Morph function is a game changer.

Honestly, compaired to the digital knobs on the Montage M, this seems like pointless overcomplication Though, if you're buying something like this insted of a workstation, or just working in-the-box, you probably are there for the cool factor, and they are undeniably very cool, plus an easy way to stand out from all the other polysynths on the market

The mod matrix is interesting, you’re right Matt. But is it quick and easy to select the modulation amount per parameter? Motorised faders are great for sure, changing presets or using the morph feature for example. Morphing isn’t new by the way: I used it a long time ago with my DX200 from Yamaha and it was incredible in terms of sound because of the FM synthesis behind the 2 sounds being morphed. ❤ All synths should have this feature for pure sound creativity.

You made a very good point that these motorized knobs are not gimmicky at all, but do actually open up ingenious possibilities in usability. You show the modulation system, which is awesome. Another example would be the envelopes, which easily get away with just one ADSR set of knobs - and this can only be implemented in a good way if the knobs can indicate the actual values. But while the led ring knobs on the Little Phatty were a brave attempt at this, knobs actually moving to their positions are a whole other level. 6 voices of polyphony are more than disappointing, though, especially given that most of the components are digital... A huge drawback in my opinion.
@xfghffhfg3 ай бұрын
The ADSR is a good point compared to the moog little phatty since the led rings don't have the same accuracy you often need to program very accurate timing.

Good evening and a maybe a good curious question, when you found your perfect mix to save for later how do you manage to remember the settings of each modern synth and then come back to it later... maybe a video for itself :) As a machinist with as many machines as you got synths i gets lost all the time with settings, speeds and feeds and that sort of thing how do you keep track of them?
@MattJohnsonJamiroquai3 ай бұрын
sometimes I lose track!
@xfghffhfg3 ай бұрын
If I understand you correctly, I think it's better to record audio. Many things can go wrong and committing to the sounds has some practice in it. Keeping all options available sometimes can get in the way of creativity.

@@xfghffhfg Maybe i colored it a little wrong on my end and compared the settings on a synth to some machines i use (i have a things with button fetish). I don't need the knobs to move on my synth, because I can "hear" the positions. Yeah, I've been doing this for a very long time!
@TheMirolab2 ай бұрын
But in this case, the knobs are each providing many different functions. With any other synth, you have to deal with the dilemma of the knobs not representing the correct setting, and then suddenly jumping to a new value when you move it. There's always a problem with it. But not with this synth. But if you don't like it, there's "every-other-synth-ever-made" that you can buy instead!!
