In my experience Zeiss 50 1.4 gives very pleasing and balanced image in terms of color and contrast, skin tones come out gorgeous. G-Master lenses in my world have strong shift to red and green colors, giving skin pink tint that I have to compensate for. I would pick Ziess any time for video over G-Master, given most of professional Cine lenses based on Zeiss optical formulas. For me filmic look = Zeiss. People just don't forget "Old" Contax Zeiss lenses, because once you see the magic Zeiss does to the video, it's unforgettable.

I'm just as excited, and this is the lens I've been waiting for. I have the 24 and 35 GM lenses, but my 50 is the Sigma Art. I've been wanting to upgrade, and while the f1.2 was enticing its price always kept me from pulling the trigger. The 50mm Sigma Art is a great lens and I just couldn't justify the cost. I don't really need that extra bit of apurture. Now I'm really glad I waited because this looks like the lens for me. Looking forward to that B&H notification.

I actually love the old Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 based on the century old Planar design. Autofocus performance is also amazingly fast from my perspective. I only see ever so slightly marginal gains in these comparisons, the overall technical and optical level is very high. If you are looking for a standard lens with less sterile bokeh, just get the very affordable Samyang 45mm f/1.8. Super tiny and lightweight as well.

Would have been nice to see or hear comparative comments been Sony 1.4 vs Zeiss 55mm 1.8 - latter is way lighter and if you mostly shoot at f/2, isn’t that a decent alternative?
@whygamewhy
@whygamewhy Жыл бұрын
The difference is mostly in the bokeh, zeiss have a very messy bokeh with more significant onion ring and more significant cateye which produces a whirling bokeh. Another difference is chromatic aberration, which the zeiss has a ton of. Also while u can both shoot at F2, the further away you are from ur max aperture the better the image quality is, so the F2 on gm and zeiss is not of the same quality. Wether it is worth the 500dollar in brand new price, is ur call.

I have a tough time deciding between 50, 85, and 135, all G Masters, but it looks like I will get the 50mm in three weeks, and then the 135, three months later, and the 85 3 months after that. I have been filming with the 24mm, even for close-ups (but that was because I made odd movies and liked the distortion in the close shots). I am not worried about focus-breathing because I don't normally change focus. I a, curious about the focus breathing compensation feature. Other than these purchases, I will save for the global shutter camera, which as been my wish since I stopped filming on the F700. I would love for Sony to make another high frame rate camera. I don't want to betray Sony and go for the Chronos camera.

Awesome review, I had the 50mm 1.2 and sold it. Stuck with the 55 1.8. I think I will give the 50 1.4 a try. I think another plus is that it uses a 67mm thread which most lenses use.

Saw some reviews about the 1.4 compared to the 1.2 and the Auto Focus is a downgrade. Love the size and weight, but AF is killer for me considering I already have the 1.2 ! Will be sticking with the 1.2 for sure

What if big and heavy wasn’t a problem would u say the 50 1.2 is better? Worst? Or the same? I’m buying used so prices are similar I’m leaning for the 1.2 but video like this make me say hum?

I love my Sony 50mm 1.8. it gets beautiful results. I really need a reason to justify upgrading it. That thing was 250 bucks and my only complaint with it really is somewhat lemon bokeh at 1.8. It's sharp and gets great results. What am I missing out on?

Hi Matt! Just wanted to ask I do have an A7c of the moment and I'm looking to upgrade to a A7s3 or an FX3. Just wanted to ask which lens would you recommend for an all around prime for video? For weddings, events, commercial ads like a go to prime lens. I could only get one which do you think would be the all rounder? 24, 35m, or the 50mm f1.4?

Hi Matt, I’d appreciate your advice. I currently have a 50 1.2 GM that I got late last year but am considering selling it and getting this 1.4 instead. The main reason for me is because I’d prefer a lighter setup if I can (I have a Sony A7IV). I love the 50 1.2 but do you think it’d be a mistake and and a downgrade since I already have it and will lose money so should just keep it?

I did exactly the same. Got the new 50 1.4 and have put my 1.2 for sale. Love the handling of this lens. Technically the difference between bokeh is minimal between both.

Hello. My name is Cristian and I am a videographer in Romania. I'm currently filming the events with a Gh5, and the music videos with the Ursa Mini Pro 4.6k. I want to switch from Panasonic to Sony. Can you help me choose between sony Fx3 and sony A7s3? Opinions are divided, but I would like your opinion as a videographer. I have been following you for a long time, I have learned a lot from your advice. Thank you,

For me 1.4 is fine, not worth the extra. I do wonder however if the 50mm f2.5 G is my super lightweight option for gimbal work albeit f2.5. I have this lens and is is so light and AF is extemely fast. Sometimes for certain old bodies, filming at f2.8 or 4 is just plain easier.
@SilatShooter

Agree the 50 G doesn't get enough love, it's awesome and sharpness and feature set are right there with the this 50 f1.4.

The 501.2 often gets promotions and trade in bonus right now due to its age. So in reality, sometimes the F1.2 is only around 400dollars more. Maybe in a year.

Agreed and I have tested it against this f1.4GM and to my eye it was better and for stills the bokeh difference is definitely there. But yes, it's noticeably heavier.

It's a bit funny to be admiring the weight loss from the 50mm f/1.2. Nikon users have to prove they can do a hundred pushups before they can buy their 50 f/1.2 lenses.

always that subject of focus breathing... by now it's really more marketing an parrot talk. Never ever has a client asked about a shot with focus breathing. It's in your head. And yes a lens without it would be nice and less is better. But it's for gearheads, not the people that hire you
