Matt there is a mod called flight manager for reusable stages (fmrs) you launch rockets or plane launched rockets the same, once the mission is complete it allows you to revert time back to when the craft separated so you can land the 1st stage, unlike simply quicksaving it saves both ships to the save file so you can control them effectively at the same time. I didn't do a good job explaining it but it's a really cool mod that allows you to perfectly recreate these types of missions and space X style recovery while the craft are still in the atmosphere

10:55 The instability is probably because the vertical stabilizer is way bigger on the real deal. It’s been a while since I’ve played it, but my recollection is that KSP doesn’t really have any vertical stabilizers correctly scaled for larger & slower aircraft like the B-52. I’m not sure why, but I think there are at least three factors. First, people _in general_ seem to think tail surfaces are smaller than they really are, and since Squad’s part designers are generally people (😁) they might be unaware of the issue. Second, this is Kerbal _Space_ program and, while you _can_ build regular planes in it, the game is obviously centered around spacecraft, which often don’t need control surfaces at all once you unlock gimbaling engines. Third is that a large vertical stabilizer is needed on real planes in _part_ because they have to deal with cross-wind takeoffs & landings, and wind is something which KSP sadly (IMHO) doesn’t model.
@UncleManuel5 жыл бұрын
Quick tech tip: use the green button next to the altimeter for cycling the gear (and increase braking force to ~70 during the build) and use at landing the orange button to turn on brakes (also works for airbrakes & dragchutes)... ;-)

I just came here after making my own X-15 inspired craft. Mine is a little wider on the back half (MK2 Fuselages) and I haven't built the B-52 Stratofortress yet so it has to take off from the ground, but because it's a little wider in the back it actually has just enough Dv to reach sub-orbital space! Cool video! PS. I also made a variant with the RAPIER engine and it's awesome.

Hey Matt, don't let *NASA* copyright claim that X-15 model you made. Be careful
@t.mitchell91354 жыл бұрын
The US still uses the 50 mi definition. The justification is that aerodynamic control is impossible beyond this point. Interesting thing is that the aborted Soyuz launch a few years ago went beyond 50 mi but below 100 km. Thus, NASA considered it a suborbital spaceflight and awarded their rookie astronaut full astronaut wings, but Roscosmos did not consider it a spaceflight.
@eekee60342 жыл бұрын
