Yeah, I thought it was... fine? I mean, there still weren't many Zelda OOT clones at that time, so having one that was merely "pretty good" was a lot better than nothing. I think a lot of people just got really hung up on the change in genre, and rejected it out of hand.
@TigerstarLoL
@TigerstarLoL 4 жыл бұрын
Jason Blalock StarFox fans are notoriously hypocritical on their reception to games. Case in point, the fans getting upset over the third-person perspective of Assault/Adventure and then stating they wanted more of Star Fox: 64. And then when Star Fox for the Wii U came out, it retconned a ton of expanded universe lore that was previously canon (like the entire inclusion of Krystal as a character) and people got upset that it was TOO MUCH like Star Fox 64. Don’t even get me started on the train wreck of Star Fox: Command, I think Matt should do a review on that mess at some point.

@@TigerstarLoL I remember someone put it best that Star Fox as a series is Miyamoto/Nintendo's go to for testing out whatever random idea they have no place else for. The first two games are pretty top notch railshooter shmups, a genre that really doesn't get enough love even among the already niche shmup genre. And then it just spins off from there into a lot of different gimmicky genre mashups. I think it's pretty easy to see how fans of the tight gameplay in the first two games would feel letdown by Nintendo's complete lack of trust in that style, and how newer fans coming in wouldn't understand the appeal of the older games

To make a long story short, Sakamoto was quite jelly about how Retro did with the Prime series while he was not helming any project and wanted to show them (he only worked on Fusion and Zero Mission before Other M). And well... because of having full creative control and forgetting why we love the series to begin with... we got that. Fortunately Nintendo was smart and sent the next game off to Spain, far from his clutches.
@RevyaAeinsett

The short answer is that Sakamoto was a director, a producer, _and_ the sole writer, and went full waifu fanfiction writer on Samus and made other bizarre mandates like limiting the control scheme as much as possible because "that makes better games" Credit where it's due to Ninja Theory for making the controls actually decent with so little to work with.

I really liked this game. I remember feeling letdown by the final boss fight because I wanted to fight Scales... but actually, I forgot he was in the game until he showed up just to NOT be a boss fight. I bet the game would have been more memorable if it stayed with the original IP. Hell, it could have been the Star Fox universe but with the original characters involved. Could be fascinating to see a reattempt at the original idea.

the first half of the game is imo superb, dark ice mine and cloudrunner fortress are amazing areas (and you can see a lot from it is taken straight out of dinosaur planet 64 in the 1 hour gameplay video) the second half is a lot more backtracky and you can obviously tell they just had to stretch the game with constraints. @@princeapoopoo5787 Ganondorf wasn't terrible in it... but it was a bit of a disappointment to me. First, because Zant made for a really freaky villain, with his alien look and calm and cool demeanor. But when you confront him, he's deliberately turned into a clown, presumably so we don't mind as much when Ganon replaces him moments after. And secondly, it wasn't exactly Ganondorf's finest portrayal. Wind Waker had brough a little humanity and nuance to Ganondorf. Even Ocarina of Time's fairly one-dimensional Ganondorf was at least a thinking and present character. TP Ganon was reduced to only being an evil force sitting in the final boss room, much like Calamity Ganon but with less justification. His execution flashback scene wouldn't have looked out of place in Dragonball Z, with his angry-grunting powerup. Maybe fitting for the bearer of the Triforce of Power, but it doesn't hurt to have some personality attached to it.

@deadshotruby6667
@deadshotruby6667 4 жыл бұрын
Gameplay wise? Sure. But they should never do dialogue with them again. It was like a cheesey fan fiction. And then the fact that they were so much shorter than the human characters made no sense, since Star Fox characters have canon heights, which are all comparable to real life sizes. It's dumb, but it really bothered me that they were so tiny.
@Nosidda
@Nosidda 4 жыл бұрын
@@deadshotruby6667 I think the reason why the dialogue was cheesy was because they weren't fully implemented into the story, they were trying to create universal dialogue for them that could fit with most of the cutscenes, they weren't really given a chance to fully develop the characters. The voice acting for the Star Fox crew actually wasn't bad though, give them good dialogue and development and it should work out fine. Overall though, I think Nintendo needs to take note from Starlink on what Star Fox should be. I think the answer is clear, Star Fox needs to evolve past just being a rail shooter, and go into the realm of a more open world idea. Starlink perfectly shows the potential for something like this as a great concept. Imagine if they took what Starlink did, and expanded that into a much larger scope project. I feel like that is the natural progression for Star Fox.

Oh, I SO hope the inclusion of Metroid: Other M footage isn't just some empty tease. So many things went wrong with that title that I just *have* to know how and why. Just the story alone has so many problems, not the least of which being the utter character assassination of Samus Aran -- the badass armor-clad Super Missile shooting bounty hunter who nearly exterminated an entire race of space parasites...reduced to a monotone, subservient dork who gladly takes orders from (and awaits authorization from) someone who she doesn't work for (despite technically having all of her powers available to her throughout the entire game's story), narrating with basically no emotion in her voice for 99% of the game about babies and motherhood and her hero worship of Adam, all while being scared shitless to the point of paralysis at the sight of Ridley, despite that reaction not lining up with how she'd reacted to seeing Ridley at any other point when she'd fought and defeated him before that. And that's all before the fact that the final boss battle is literally just pointing your crosshairs at the game's Big Bad, who then gets frozen by another NPC, and then gets killed by *A COMPLETELY SEPARATE GROUP OF OTHER NPCS*, so you don't even get to actually defeat the villain of the game yourself.

A real shame they didn't refine what they had with Star Fox: Assault. It was solid and had loads of potential. The giant and detailed levels were impressive too. If they weren't gonna do it themselves they could've gotten Namco to make the next game again. Could've had Project Aces work on it too maybe, although they were pretty busy throughout the 00s. Nintendo are simply clueless, they don't know what to do with Star Fox, just like they didn't with Metroid for a long time and F-Zero still, and yet it'd be so easy. Too bad.

Being a young kid at the time of Starfox Adventures, and becoming truly hooked on video games BECAUSE of games like Ocarina of Time and Starfox64 (Not to mention my dinosaur obsession thanks to Jurassic Park), I was very excited for this game. I was also blissfully unaware of Dinosaur Planet until years later, and even still never really looked into it. In fact, watching this video now is the first time I've ever really taken an interest into what happened. I can very much recognize with my adult brain that all the issues with the game that are mentioned here exist, just by thinking back to actively playing it at launch. And I can confidently say that I wish I could see what Dinosaur Planet would have been. However, I still love Starfox Adventures the way that it is. I loved the idea of just flying to different parts of the planet...etc. I think I remember wishing there was a little more freedom with the Arwing, and the ability to fly up to the Great Fox, etc. Basically, I wanted No Man's Sky. Anyway, idk. I loved it. I also do remember being confused by Scales and Andross. Definitely the most jarring part of the game, even back when I was younger. I remember being so anxious about the build up of having to fight him, just for him to disappear. It took me so long just to try to fight the giant T-Rex, I was terrified. If it were up to me, I think there would be a way to resolve all of this, and please everyone. Dinosaur Planet can still exist the way that it was. Crystal obviously had a history there before Fox showed up. Dinosaur Planet could still be developed as a prequel to the events of Starfox Adventures...with General Scales being the true villain, instead of Andross. The whole game could play out without a single reference to Starfox. It can very easily work within the Starfox canon, in my opinion.

@@alexcat6480 Essentially, yes. It's basically beating a horse that's been dead for over 10 years. Everyone said ''It wasn't a real Starfox game.'' And maybe it wasn't, but regardless, what defines what a Starfox game is? There had only been 2 games released before adventures, so the series as a whole wasn't truly set in stone. Nintendo tried to branch out with adventures. Fans backlashed. Now Ninty is scared to veer too far from the same ol' starfox 64 routine, which doesn't work because it's not the 80s anymore. People are mad because Starfox is stagnant, but people are also mad when its different. I think it'd be interesting to see where Starfox would be right now is people had applauded adventures for the truly unique game it is, rather than condemning it because it's not another repetitive rail-shooter. It what it is. the Starfox fandom is probably the most toxic Nintendo fandom, and will continue to be so, most likely. Only thing that could drag Starfox out of the muck at this point is some genuine positivity.

The only forcing there probably was, was changing it from an N64 game to a Game Cube game, and that's all there is from Nintendo's side of the deal here. Unfortunate set back for sure. The one main culprit though, is Microsoft getting into the process of buying them out, which forced a deadline to be pretty much the day before the buy out.

I beat star fox 64 every day for 2+years straight. Some of us prefer the faster pace action. When I played Star Fox adventures for the first time, I got to the part where star fox lands, i walked around a bit, and turned the game off. I suspect most people that liked this game was too young when star fox 64 was released, nothing wrong with that. Im too old now to be "frustrated". Its just an example of what happens when you change what people loved about a franchise to begin with. (like my pfp, shoutout to those who get it) Star Fox adventures could be reskinned into a zelda game, if you are into that sort of thing, hell it was reskinned from a 3d adventure game to a star fox 3d adventure game (great vid, matt). I'm glad I know this lol. All cuz dinosaur planets original protagonists LOOKED like the Star Fox team. Video Games have mechanics also lol. Loved the constant shooting, intergalactic battles, and explosions. Another example is when call of duty added jetpacks and went to space. That franchise was so big that so many people complained to the point where they went back to WW2 and the Cold War eras. That doesnt mean jetpacks suck, its that people that like call of duty prefer the boots on the ground aspect. Imagine you are watching your favorite show (like Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones), and after a couple seasons of great story, the actors start singing. Then the show becomes a musical. Even if they were expert singers, most would turn it off/complain. You don't go to a gas station to buy a computer.
