Thanks for all the tip of the week. Knowledge is key and we as trainers, coaches, students of the game have to keep learning. Always learning. I like how real you are and it shows how much you love the equine athletes!

Great reminder, I always lunge my horse before I ride! He’s lazy so it really helps getting him tuned in to me. LOVE your hat!!

Hi again MATT Great tip regarding the chin chain. A timesaver but more importantly a respect getter. Much better control to prepare for a better ride... Thx Matt for another great tip! Health to all!

You do a great job responding to uneducated comments from lay type people who somehow deem themselves competent to judge. Anyway, I have found that some of my clients come to me with way to fit of a horse from constant lunging because they are overhorsed. It is important that riders are matched properly with their horses or are on a good training program with a knowledgeable trainer. Just wanted to add that. Nice video. Great training. Awesome horsemanship.

@ericclayton61464 жыл бұрын
@@mattmillsreining1 Yes sir.... Can you use a lunge line short or long line to get more out of your horse before you go to the practice arena. Thanks for the great advise!
@mattmillsreining14 жыл бұрын
Eric Clayton, so I’d say a lazy horse would do better on a longer line and possibly use a lunge whip. I click or kiss 1st and then make a move with my body for forward motion. If they don’t move after those 2, I use the whip/ extra rope/ flag to make them move. Then repeat as needed. With enough practice you will no longer need any aids to keep them going freely! Good luck! Sometimes after the first few lunging sessions your horse won’t have much energy left for the ride! 💪🏾💯〽️

Do you think lunging horses eventually teach them to come out of the stall fresh and allow them to buck/act up when you first get on? As opposed to riding them through the freshness and teaching them to listen and behave regardless
@mattmillsreining14 жыл бұрын
Circle G Ranch, so that’s a great question! I agree with you to a certain point. I Do not lunge mine Every day. HOWEVER, training is training regardless of whether you’re on their back or not. So if one is noticeably distracted ( which mine was in this video ) I think it’s better for that horse to lunge before getting on. And I mean WORK on that lunge line. Typically takes me 3-5 minutes to get ones mind right. Not looking to just give the ol 20-30 minute mindless run til you’re tired lunge. If you have their attention before you ever get on... that will become a habit over time. Patience!! 🤙🏾💯〽️

My farrier will "jip" a horse around a bit if they don't want to stand still for him. Does exactly what you just did - not really as formal as "lunging". He'll "jip" them on the spot in whatever they have on be it rope halter, web halter or whatever and no need for a long rope. I had never heard it referred to as "jip" - he's a cowboy from Oklahoma transplanted to south Tx. Luckily for us!

I broke my collar bone and 4 ribs last month by not getting rid of my horses freshness before riding. Stupid mistake on my part. I normally will always lunge for a few to see what mind the horse is in...was in a hurry..

Wou do all your horses seem a little small for you? I dont know but where in from The Netherlands , The horses you would rode would be allot higher in their legs. Allso shouldnt a Lunging rope be allot longer? This could hier his back legs and back running such small circles cold from jump. I would love to see you on a Frisian horse or a Another Dutch breed

Hey, thanks for watching!! Our Quarter horses we use for Reining are on average around 15 hands. They are very strong and athletic or obviously they would not be able to the amazing things that they do!! Lunge lines are all different lengths!! I have many, there are no " set " lengths. It's whatever works, OR whatever you have!! Been to The Netherlands, I love it there. Have a great day!〽️

Matt Mills i did not say you were to heavy. But They just seem smaller then a Dutch riding horse, in sorry my English is bad i hope you understand. You have a Amazing Stable and i see you care well for your horses. Thats allways a plus when it comes to horsemanship. But to me seeing you stand next to The horse , hè seems like a pony not a horse. No crtisime because you dont seem to heavy now that would be a problem. But i have seen grown men on icelandic horses so yeah, hight is allso bound to where your from to whats normale .I was just talking About hight not weight at all. The horse can easy Carry you on his back. Again beautiful stable and horses.. look into Dutch breeds i think you could allso enjoy them for dressage and mang more things. My horse just passend Away she was 35. Greetings from The Netherlands

Regarding "short" horses - horses used for ranch work (working cattle) need to be able to get down and work low with speed. Cowboy sports require the same. Shorter horses are easier on the cowboy who has to dismount & remount often. Plus it's a shorter distance to fall.

How do you obtain good collection? Im just wondering because i’ve accidentally been telling my horse to give his face instead of actually collecting up. My trainer has explained it to me but i’m still a bit confused and i’m wondering if you might have some tips?
@mattmillsreining14 жыл бұрын
Sliding Into Everyday, so that’s a great question. I consider it an art form. If your horse gives you a response to a cue and you consistently release at that point... you technically are fine!! Depends on what stage in training you and your horse is at. My advice would be to do just that. Have someone video your trainer so you can see what they are talking about. Then video yourself while trying to copy. Collection is such a “ feel “ thing! Don’t beat yourself up! Everyone struggles with this! 👍🏾💯〽️
@horselover89234 жыл бұрын
Why don’t you just use a rope halter? It does the same thing but it’s less abrasive. As a horse trainer you gotta be more cautious about what you put out there because it’s not like anybody wants to get all horse events banned. ( Not to be rude )
@mattmillsreining14 жыл бұрын
horselover114, not rude at all! So I DO use rope halters and have many videos on my website @mattmillsreining.com training with them. I disagree with you on the severity of a rope halter. The majority of the rope halters that I see sold out there, especially for “ colt- starting “ have in fact Way more bite. You’ve got to remember that it’s all about the Handler/ Rider. With that all being said, if a person wants to put a rope halter on to lunge, GREAT! Do it! No need to be cautious. I treat my horses like my kids! And I LOVE my kids!! 🤙🏾💯〽️

I only disagree with use the chains as a tool. The chain cam jump back and hurt them. It's a use of pain compliance no matter what.

I mean no rudeness in by what I’m going to say at all, but most typical reining horses, are 14- 15 hands tall! And if you don’t respect this way of training, I respect that but from what I see Matt’s and awsome trainer who knows what he is doing! Have an awsome day!

In your video with, “That Horse”, I believe was his name(?), you’re references, (twice), to horses being maniacs, putting chains, (that people don’t need but your using one)🤦🏻♀️🤭😒, blah blah. Everything you say in this video is completely ridiculous. You don’t have the basic knowledge of working ‘with a horse’. You refer to him as antsy? When? Not even a bit? He had complete indifference and confusion towards your attempt at lunging him with a chain. And actually striking him with the end of the lead rope, not a lunge line, why did you do that? What were you asking of the horse at that moment? Go away from me? Fear me? Are you confused enough? Poor horse. Seriously. Don’t educate others when you don’t have the knowledge to teach. With all due respect. ‘Looks like he’s ready to ride’! Really? Okay, if you say so!!! 🤦🏻♀️🌰😝
