you set the maximum resolution supported by the monitor and then start>display settings>scale and layout>change the size of text, apps, and other items>125% or 150% or whichever suits you. This way you get to enjoy the best resolution for the media and still be comfortable .

I recently got my first ultrawide monitor and it's amazing! Having a small portable monitor as a secondary display instead of a full 24" monitor sounds like a great idea and saves up space. I'm just trying to find a 2K one that doesn't take up too much space and isn't expensive.
@er.intheusa2 жыл бұрын
I believe you can get max resolution and refresh when connected through the provided DisplayPort. I have it as well, and I prefer to keep it at the high resolution, and then adjust the apps to increate size of fonts as needed. (Photoshop, Safari, Teams....) Most apps have some way of adjusting them.

This review was awesome! Nice Matt, I loved it! I've got a 32" LG display, had it for a few years, and will consider tis one for an upgrade!
@davidma33682 жыл бұрын
Hi Matt. MacOS natively runs on 110ppi or 220ppi. The "retina" displays Apple uses are 220 ppi while the others are 110ppi. 220 ppi is 5k at 27inch displays which is why LG made the 5k display 5 years ago specifically for macs and why the studio display resolution is 5k rather than 4k. The pro display XDR is 6k because it's larger thus needs more pixels to have the same ppi as the studio display at 220. The LG monitor you bought which is 40 inches and 5k by 2k is roughly 140 ppi. This causes it to be in an uncomfortable middle ground which forces mac os to either adjust by having everything be super tiny or super huge. When scaled to a non-integer scale it ends up taking a lot of GPU power to run it. going from 110 to 220 ppi is just a matter of doubling the pixels, but going from 110 to 140 is a more difficult adjustment. Thus, to improve performance they end up limiting the refresh rate of the monitor instead of the resolution. Hope this helps! I can send you an article that explains this far better than can.
@MattNVZION2 жыл бұрын
Hi David, I was actually able to change the refresh rate to 72Hz, it had nothing to do with macOS but rather a setting within the LG monitor itself. But thanks for the taking the time to explain this, it does make a lot of sense.
@antonbabadjanov88132 жыл бұрын
Surprisingly this is one area where Windows excels over Mac OS (and GTK under Linux) - since Windows supports proper fractional scaling. On Mac and Linux you end up scaling up to the nearest larger integer and then scaling down to the fractional desired amount, while on Windows, applications are requested to render at the desired fractional scale. For vector-based UI elements the performance penalty is zero while for raster-based elements it is still minimal since this is done on the UI element level.
@bursztyn102 жыл бұрын
I didn't realize an OS can be that limiting. I'm glad I didn't follow the M1/M2 hype to switch to a Macbook.

I don't think what you're saying about scaling performance on the GPU is true for these new M series chipsets. They are optimized to meet a wide array of scaling & not take any measurable performance hit in the process of doing so.

To unlock all resolutions use SwitchRes (shareware for Mac). My M1 MB Air offers 5k native, but not my 2020 iMac 27". With SwitchRes I can use 5120x2160 72Hz with Thunderbolt. The LG is too dim, works only in a dim room and the matte finish is too fuzzy. I prefer my 27" iMac screen. But the LG screen size is perfect. Oh, and buy a set of speakers, the internal ones are bad. For adjusting the volume with Mac kbd use another shareware Sound Control. Magnet has been mentioned in the video.

Thanks for the suggestion but I did try easyres and it didn’t work. It ended up being a setting within the monitor.

I had that display at home for just 3 days. After the 3 days i gave him back to the shop. 50hz-60hz is absolutely not useable for my work.
