Hey Matt, august 2023 and I’m finally considering the CL. Maybe it’s because I can’t decide between SL2 or SL2s 🤣. I would only use it with M lenses from my M10M and R kit. My concern is APSc- I’ve been a full frame guy since Canon 1Ds days, not enjoying a Fuji XT2 or GRII I used. Think apsc in this is good? Or stick with the SL2 thoughts? Just a complicated matter, I’m also looking for a body to adapt a ton of’s ICE lenses to as the canon R5 is not floating my boat. I’ve been thinking about a Hasselblad X1D2 for those lenses, but the Fuji GFX 50II has got a flippy screen and ibis. I need help.

Another big thank you for an excellent summary of the auto manual options for the CL. For auto go-to I love the Vario-Elmar 18-56mm f/3.5 - 5.6 ASPH. For manual I have the Voigtlander Color Skopar 21mm f3.5, and Voigtlander Color Skopar 35mm f2.5. I also have the Summilux-TL1:1.4 35mm ASPH which I find quite heavy for the CL. By contrast, the APO-MACRO-ELMARIT-TL 60mm f/2.8 ASPH is very comfortable on the CL with flexible use in the street for portraiture etc. Need a workshop next time I can get to the UK. Stay well.

Thanks for this, another useful look at things Leica. I have a Q and a CL with the Elmarit 2.8/18 mm "kit" lens. The combination is a dream, but I am almost certainly going to go for a 1.4/35 mm TL lens as well, partly because of your recommendation, reinforced by Ann Nominous’ report of Peter Karbe’s verdict. There’s a copy of the lens going for a very good price just at the moment…. I’ll be hammering the credit card, but Leica quality really is worth it. I picked up an inexpensive CL a few months ago as a small knock around camera when I didn’t want to haul my SL2 out. I’m absolutely loving it and it’s gone on every shoot since. I just tuck it in the bag with the SL2 or Nikon 850 and I always find an excuse to take a few pictures with it. Surprisingly I have used way more of the CL images from my “casual” shots than I ever expected.

I have noticed that when using recent non-Leica wide aperture lenses on my CL, like those from 7Artisans or similar, that they focus beyond infinity. By that I mean that directing the CL on to a very distant object results in focus being achieved just before the infinity stop is reached.

Great videos as always. I have two questions. If you use a Leica M lens on the CL does the distance scale on the M lens still function correctly when setting the hyperfocal distance for focussing such as during street photography. This procedure is based on the aperture. This brings me to the second question. While the only change is the sensor size and the effective magnification and apparent focal length changes so does the effective widest aperture changes by the crop factor. For example a 50mm f2 becomes 75 f3. Do any of these things matter and I presume Lightroom simply records it as a M50 f2.

OK I was at home so had time to check quickly.. the distance scale set at 1m is in focus on Leica m and Leica CL, the brightness looks the same, and yes EXIF data, if a camera provides it is whatever the lens is so 50/2 in your example. Only difference I see is 35mm=50mm on CL.

@ebreckpo65634 жыл бұрын
Thank you Matt for reviewing this camera. Below my opinion regarding the CL. The CL/TL2 has mostly be underrated by the Leica community. For me the CL ticks a lot of boxes. Although neglected for some time by Leica it received recently a firmware update, streamlining the camera with the interface of the Q2 as the SL2 and under the hood L mount updates. I bought the camera late in 2018 with an 18mm f/2.8 and the 23mm f/2.0 (second hand) It is a compact APS-C system delivering excellent results. A2 prints are no problem (even larger) It keeps the Leica DNA, just the functions you need. The range of T lenses is sufficient, I use mostly the Summicron 23mm TL. Planning to invest in the macro (only Leica lens with a 1:1 ratio without accessories). With the L mount alliance some other players will provide native APS-C lenses. I think Sigma have some available (soon). The viewfinder, although lower res than e.g. the Q2 or SL still holds up very nicely and has for me better eye relief compared to the Q/Q2 for people wearing glasses. I can manually focus even without magnification. The Leica CL lenses are optically excellent and have great resolving power. Adapting M ( 28-35-50-90mm) lenses works fine, more in line with the SL/SL2 albeit crop sensor but less heavy. I would be cautious with the wider M mount lenses and test them ( as with most wide optics M mount on a non M body camera sensor). I would use an adequate lens profile in the menu, if not 6 bit encoded. As the profile will correct somehow for colour drift in the corners. As my eyesight is getting worser with the years it is for me a viable alternative to the M system, although a M camera is still my favourite goto camera on most occasions. The mechanical shutter speed goes up to 1/8000s and you have electronic shutter up to 1/25000s (of course take note of the limitations of electronic shutter). Great when you want to shoot wide open in daylight. You can use zone focusing with M lenses and benefit of the larger depth of field compared to FF e.g. your 35mm will have a FF focal length of 50mm but with the depth of field of a 35mm. Unfortunately the TL lenses have no way to show a distance scale. What I am less found of: Battery life could be better but would make the camera larger. It is a compromise, if you are using lenses with image stabilisation the capacity drops fast. They are fairly inexpensive by Leica standards and you can use the Panasonic BLC12E. Leica is aware of the issue as they designed the protector leather halfcase with easy access to the battery compartment, you even have room for an extra memory card. A battery percentage indicator would be nice instead of the 3 bars we get now. Mechanical shutter sound is fairly loud (higher pitch) compared to the M10 (non P) but you have silent electronic shutter (knowing the limitations) The 4 way directional pad has sometimes a life on his own moving the AF point to an unknown position when the camera is on. You can of course lock the camera by a long press on the mode selector button. the only button who works is the shutter release. Or switch the camera off. It would be nice to have an option to lock the directional pad and keep the other functions alive. I am old school and still use focus and recompose. I expect the focus point in the middle. Some form of weather proofing, although TL lenses are not weatherproof, SL lenses are. For the video guys some external ports like a microphone input, although I am of the opinion this camera is designed as a stills photography tool. Some will miss the usb-c charging, as this is the hottest thing now. I'd rather use a separate battery charger than frying my camera motherboard due to a faulty usb charger. As with most electronic viewfinder cameras, shooting in high contrast situations can be challenging as the EVF has a lower contrast as the real contrast or even the contrast recorded on your raw files.Shooting in low light due to the lower framerate and flash photography can be challenging. I am keeping this camera as the images are excellent compared to the size, weight . We have of course other players in this segment and out of the context of this conversation. These are of course my own opinions With regards,

ebreckpo many thanks for your detailed write up overview of the CL. I’m sure other viewers will enjoy reading that too so thanks for sharing. The main point that jumped out to me were the arrow keys. I am using the CL now for a little over two and a half years with the 23mm f/2 Summicron and the 60mm f/2.8 macro Elmarit lenses. I also have a Novoflex adapter for 5 of my Pentax Ltd. primes. The Pentax lenses work surprisingly well on the CL and I don't feel to 'upgrade' to manual Leica lenses right now. The manual focussing on the CL is smooth and fast and so far the best camera kit for travel, street and landscape photography I have used so far. That camera is simple to operate and the results are excellent.

Takuan thanks, well summarised. Ah yes I forget the 60mm ..a great lens too. I tested it once a while back but I decided to stick with manual focus lenses. As you say if you have an existing lens lineup there is no need to change. I hear you can’t do the 2 step zoom shown in the video with the Novaflex, correct? Thanks.

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom The Novoflex adapter is of high quality, made in Germany and pricey, but utilised my good quality Pentax prime lenses and saved me a lot of money. @@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom can you do the two-step with the Voigtlaender lens as well, or only Leica? I came within a whisker of buying the Leica T, but ultimately decided not to due to the manual focus issues, but it sounds like they've improved a lot. I've "only" got ZM and VM lenses (missed a few great Summarit-M deals, alas) so I had the impression that they wouldn't benefit from the extra features of the Leica adaptor - but would love to be wrong. I now have an S1R, so getting a TL3 or something is on the cards. I can also attest to the Novoflex adaptor's quality - I just got it, and it's perfectly snug with the Nokton and the Planar.

I found it to be much easier to have the magnification on the right dial. From the dial placements, the left would be in a similar spot like the M or Q Shutter dial, so I want shutter times on that one. Then the right dial for magnification became an instinct to me: Put the camera to your eye, thumb to the right, turn dial to punch in, immediately can do critical focus and do a half shutter press for composition. Works so great for me, I love this little marvel of a simplistic camera.

Thank you for your content. I enjoy your videos very much. To my eye, and brain, the TL lenses are better on the CL than the M lenses. Not sure why that is, but in an interview with Peter Karbe he stated that the TL lenses were among the best they ever made. In particular, the TL 35mm 1.4 and the TL 60mm macro. I agree with him :) I have the two new VC lanthar lenses, and still prefer the native TL lenses. There is good science behind why on the CL the TL lenses are better than M lenses. Similarly, the Leica SL lenses are dreamy (and heavy) on the CL, and M lenses are not equal to the SL lenses on the SL system. None the less, its fun to just play with the manual lenses... love those M lenses on a M body!!
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Anne, you are indeed correct. TL lenses are said to be optically as good as some of the best SL lenses as crop lenses are easier to make, as I understand. For perfection and resolution TL and SL lenses will beat M lenses. (More like say digital Hasselblad files) but if you want something a bit more imperfect or enjoy the tactile feel of manual focusing M lenses are great. I used to shoot the Nikon D800 when it was #1 for 35mm digital (2012) and it was so perfect the files were dull so I eventually sold it and got the CCD sensor Leica M9 (and moved to film), for more interesting rendering.

However you can change the "wheel " for the magnification menu4- Customize Control- Wheel assignment. Focus peaking on right wheel same menu but right wheel assignment enable the focus peaking [ON]. When you do a long press on the right wheel button it will give you the selection of focus peaking. You can also disable unneeded functions. I'm using various L-mount lenses (Leica, Sigma-both auto, and 7Artisans-L-mount manual) and also M-mount Voigtlanders. I have the Leica M-L adapter, and also a 7Artisans M-L adapter, without the 6-bit connections. Interestingly, whilst focus peaking works fine for all M and L-mount manuals, magnification only works (using the right button) when the M-mount lens is on the Leica adapter, and not for the manual L-mount lenses or any M lenses when using the 7A adapter. It seems that you must have something with contacts, either in the lens or adapter, for magnification to work. I also find that sometimes MF is best on the Leica and Sigma autofocus lenses, to overcome a slight tendency to hunt in some situations.

From the KZbin quality video, the TL lenses have more micro contrast and may be a touch sharper overall from corner to corner, but seem more "harsh" compared to your 35mm M lens and less "leica like" in creaminess. If it were me I'd use your 35 on portraits and the 18 TL lens for street...it's just too bad the CL and/or TL don't have a tilt screen. It's one of the reasons I use a Samsung NX camera as I love street shooting TLR style with my OM or Konica AR glass (my R glass is a bit too big for street, TBH). I've shockingly put down my DP2 Merrill (which I love for all its flaws) just because it doesn't have a tilt screen.

Stunning pictures of (it must be said) stunning young women. And a stunning camera. Thank you for the thoughts on this gem. I have been looking for a camera a few years now. I have used the Sigma SD10 for maaaany years with a same sort of set up but then as an amateur. Last year the SD 10 finally broke down. And I sold my lenses after discovering there isn't a good Sigma alternative (for me, that is). Now I saved a little bit of money this last 1,5 year and I have to decide: the Q2 or a CL with 1 or 2 lenses. But my eyesight is become much worse these last years. I just can't use the MF as I want. I tried the Q1 for a day and I was stunned! It felt so good, just everything was right. What would be your final advice? A CL or a Q2 (and maybe a Sigma DP3 Merril for the extra extreme sharp funthings)? Love your calm video's (no fancy music etc, just the essence), love the pictures. I am a city/landscape/architecture kind of fellow. Never did modelling. Did a lot of weddings though:-) Have a great one!

Thanks Herman, lovely to hear from you. I find the Q is similar to an M in size and weight. Fixed lens helps keep it simple. The CL is smaller and lighter with an excellent EVF. My challenge project this summer is shooting cyclists moving at high speed taking multiple shots using the high speed continuous exposure setting. To add to the challenge I used the 35mm Voigtlander at f11 for greater depth of field. Sadly, I got very few keepers; too many shots even at f11 were out of focus. The only problem with the CL seems to be that you don't have that big choice for wide lenses: the 18mm and 23 autofocus TL lenses only. With M mount lenses and the crop factor, you find yourself pushed towards longer focal lengths.....

Yes good point. 15mm voigtlander? Great lens (see video) or 12mm Laowa lens (not tried but is L mount)... still not super wide with crop applied though as you say.
@fellowcitizen4 жыл бұрын
Little known fact: there are five native lenses wider than the 18mm for the Leica CL, although four are are designed for full-frame: Sigma's 'Contemporary' APS-C primes (16mm f/1.4, 30mm f/1.4, and 56mm f/1.4) have just released in L mount, and are 100% compatible with the CL and TL as long as firmware is up to date (thanks to the L Mount Alliance). Since they've just released, there may be another update due from Leica and/or Sigma to assure compatibility. The 16mm is definitely the largest of those primes, though, while the 56mm is nice and compact (the Contemporary series are much smaller than the Art series.) Yet, at 400g, the 16mm APS-C still lighter than all the full-frame wides. Panasonic have a 'Certified by Leica' ~500g 16-35mm f/4 zoom. The widest native lens for the L mount is the Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 Art, and perhaps smaller than the Panasonic, but denser at 795g. The 'Art' line is higher quality than the 'Contemporary' line. (There's also the 14mm f/1.8 Art prime, but this was originally designed for full-frame SLRs, so it's likely to be replaced by a much smaller version, and it's huge. The first of the mirrourless 'DN' replacement f/1.4 Art lenses has just released, but it's the 85mm.) Leica's own zoom is the heaviest at around a kilogram: 16-35mm f/3.5-4.5 SL zoom Here is a size comparison: camerasize.com/compact/#570.804,726.690,570.727,726.871,726.836,639.732,639.906,726.921,ha,t (Some of the lenses don't show up for all cameras, so I've had to use substitutes.)

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Leaving aside the budget-category, the L Mount has as many lens options (or is on track to very soon) as the E mount, and more than the new Canon/Nikon systems. Although mainly shooting Fuji, my oops-collected-along-the-way cameras were from Leica (M6), Panasonic (GM5) and Sigma (SD) so the L Mount Alliance was a fortunate combination. I can use the M lenses and Art lenses at their intended focal lengths on the S1R along with two native AF lenses. Even the microfourthirds primes can potentially be converted to L mount by Sigma, so all the lenses converge on the new system. Suddenly, it's a complete system even though I only got the camera itself since the last time we spoke here :)

I use a Ricoh GR III & a Canon EOS 5D (I) I do agricultural "street" and landscape photography thinking of moving to Leica CL or SL2 It seems to me that once you go from the actually pocketable Ricoh to the bulk of a CL, you might as well go full on and take an SL2 Decades ago, my camera was a Leica rangefinder with a little lens that you could turn and push back into the camera body I suppose I have succumbed to the mysticism of Leica image quality, I have not really proved for myself. Is the SL2 really a quantum difference from the CL?
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom4 жыл бұрын
Antonomase Apophasis hi CL vs SL, jump yes, mostly in size. If you shoot a 28mm FL the 18mm plus CL is one of the smallest Leica setups you can get and combined they are still smaller and lighter than I think all SL lenses. The SL2 offers more resolution (see SL2 video) but combined with SL lenses it is too be to consider for me. SL with M lenses I could be tempted. I don’t need 40mp but you might want that for your work.
@antonomaseapophasis51424 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply From your observation I can see why the CL suits your work which is very intimate, don’t want to break rapport with a big ole machine My problem is that I have a few images which I think are worthy of making into huge prints When I hand them over to printer, his reaction is invariably “not enough in the file.” On occasion I have had to confess to taking images I really like with a phone. I think my destiny is an SL2, but I am worried that I am choosing the SL2 over a Fuji GFX image quality for snobbery rather than proven image quality superiority

Antonomase Apophasis Thanks, yes I use big machines too but they tend to be film. Hasselblad for example! :). Saying that if funds allow and you want intimate image quality you might want to consider the Hasselblad X1D too. I use the CL, have the 18, 35, 60 and 55-135 TL lenses, as well as a 60mm R mount and 35mm M sumilux, 50mm M cron and 75mm M cron. Have also a bunch of old Nikon AIS glass that I have used with success. The CL is a great little camera.

Einar Landre Thanks Einar! Great lens line up!! Yes you might have predicted some of my future videos mentioning old lenses ;). I will say no more but that is to follow.

Hi Einar. I have a question for you if you don't mind! I've heard the 35mm summilux TL is amazing and I was wondering, autofocus aside, how you find it compares with using the 35 summilux m mount with adapter? I see by your list of lenses that you have both so I thought I'd ask. Thanks!

@@joelreid3914 The 35mm TL is superb and it has a minimum focal length of 30cm which I have found valuable.

@@joelreid3914 Hi Joel, excuse me for jumping in too.. after testing the 35Lux TL is does give a almost identical look to my 50Lux M. Very sharp.

That upcoming series of LTM lenses sounds very interesting. At some point I would like to buy a Leica IIIG, so learning about the lenses is a must.

Still torn btw a Leica CL or SL2s or Nikon ZF... Briefly own a TL2 with a 18 TL lens. I took the TL2 out for a dinner for a special occasion and the low light image quality is just unbearable and I was quite embarrassed when asked to share the photos. I sold the Tl2 combo eventually shortly after. My experience with TL2 adapting m lenses was also not very pleasant. I own quite a few m or ltm lenses. Always want to buy a nice camera to adapt m lenses on. SL2s is too big for walk around in my opinion. And Nikon ZF is not that Leica(its just personal opinion) . I also shoot fujifilm and like the form factor but it's kind of weird to adapt m lenses on fujifilm bodies.

Tough choice.. SL2-s for that nice FF look and VF, CL for size (pair with a fast lens for low light. A new 28/1.4 or small Nokton 1.4. Nikon is Nikon as you say (I like film Nikon (see tonight's video) but not interested in the digital ones even if it does make shooting M lenses very easy).

I might wait for the ZF2. Currently adapting my m or ltm lense on a Z6 with either techart mtz02 or a dumb adaptor if the lens is too heave or have fle@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom

We can't tell a difference in the video - the value would be in giving your opinion and experience, having seen the images properly.

BlueIn2Red thanks, sorry I was trying not to force my opinion on people. The image quality of the TL lenses is excellent but I prefer the size of small M lenses vs the TL 35/1.4 and I prefer to buy metal at glass not electronics so I feel safer buying M glass / older M mount lenses. But the image quality of TL lenses is excellent no question and AF is fast and accurate.

I own both TL and M lenses, however on my Leica CL I still prefer to use M lenses. My TL lenses: Super-Vario-Elmar-TL 11-23, APO-Vario-Elmar-T 55-135, APO-Macro-Elmarit-TL 60mm f/2.8 ASPH I own many M lenses, two of my favorite ones on CL body is: Summaron-M f5.6 28mm and Summilux-M 50mm f1.4 I do architectural / landscape / street photography, lots of low light or night photography, I noticed that TL lenses give me much more noise using same 100 ISO. TL lenses is amazing for convenience, when you need auto focus to shoot things quick, or lens like Super-Vario-Elmar-TL 11-23 gives you incredible variety, but color rendering is not as good as M. M lens photography with small tripod using this lens, Summilux-M 50mm f1.4 is a spectacular lens to, it gives me exceptional bokeh results, great low light lens, that feels perfect ergonomically on CL.

Thanks for sharing. Yes I've been tempted by the Sumamron!! :) Yes the Summilux-M 50mm f1.4 is one of the best for sure. You might enjoy the Voigtlander Nokton 35mm f1.2 as you can focus at 0.5m and it gives a 50mm equivalent. It just a Lux look. My most used lens on the CL.

Henry Anthon thanks Henry! Ha not sun, I developed a skin condition in the last 12 months. Doc says it’s fixable with cream I just need to get organised and go get some! Family doctor noticed it a few weeks ago during regular meet-up. Back to normal face in a few month hopefully!
