For screw-mount, I recommend checking out the older version of the Voigtlander 25/4.0 Snapshot-Skopar lens. No rangefinder coupling, but similar to this 28/5.6 lens, you will always hit focus anyway when just roughly estimating the zone focus at this wide focal length.

I liked watching your report. Despite the small dimensions, I find no point in purchasing such a limited lens. On the opposite side, and despite the exaggerated dimensions, I prefer the 28mm f/1.4 made by 7artisans every day over this lens.

Matt, thank you so much for this review. My only Leica/Leitz M/LTM 28mm lens is a pre-war Leitz 28mm f/6.3 Hektor so I jumped on the pre-order wagon for the TT Artisan 28/5.6 thanks to your review. BTW, if you ever get a chance to review a Leitz 28mm f/6.3 Hektor I bet there are a lot of us in your viewing audience that would love to see your take on that vintage lens.

That looks like a nice small lens TTArtisan has put together there. I am indeed considering getting a 28mm lens for street photography, but I've got my eyes on a Minolta 28mm f2.8 M-Rokkor lens. It's much bigger and as with all items from Minolta, it's getting quite old. But it really suits my soft spot for Minolta cameras and lenses...

I own a clean copy of this lens and it is lovely but it brings up 35mm framelines on an M camera. You can overturn it to bring up the 28mm which throws your close focus out a touch. Works great with my CLE though.

Hey Matt, thanks for the vid and doing this preview on different cameras. Still as this lens is trying to be as close to the Summaron as can be, if you look at the pics it’s definitely not in my view especially when it comes to the colour rendition. The reds and greens on the Summaron are much more vivid and saturated while other colours are rather pale giving it this distinct look. It’s a pity that TTArtisans is mostly living and selling on the promise to get a Leica copy for the fraction of a price but if you look closer it’s a totally different ballgame. I am not saying that this lens isn’t fun but I think its important to say that this isn’t the real deal.

A rather odd reply, as far as I am concerned, likely the most ridiculous response I have read in a long while. Does anyone really expect to get a Leica equivalent lens for 1/10th the price of the Leica equivalent? I thank Matt for his review and the pics. He was very clear it is not a Leica equivalent, but a nice affordable option. I wonder how you might respond to a similar review of my pre-war Leitz 28mm f/6.3 Hektor, worth a small fortune these days but not in terms of "color rendition." If Matt lived in the USA I would be glad to send it him to review just to get his take on a true vintage Leica lens. "TTArtisans is mostly living and selling on the promise to get a Leica copy for the fraction of a price but if you look closer it’s a totally different ballgame." No, actually they are not. If you can get your hands on it the Ricoh GR 28mm f2.8 LTM lens is a fantastic lens. It’s also very compact but I almost always leave the lens hood screwed on which nearly doubled the length of the lens

Another alternative could be the 28mm (ltm?) color skopar. They’re discontinued, but easily found on eBay. edit: looked up their price, quite shocking.. almost as much as the new Ultron (probably a better proposition).

Thanks I did, very little different, both softish with vignetting. TTA is nicer made no question, better in most ways. Orion has heavier vignetting.

Damn you were fast to get and review this lens! I have been sure I’d be getting this lens for my M6 once it had been announce but now I think should give it a pass, at least for now. Completely odd filter size is a bummer. Good luck finding yellow filter for it. Of course you can use an adapter but it adds like 1/5 to the lens size which kills the beautiful design of this lens. Your review has also convinced me it could flare too much for my liking. It also seems to distort quite a bit which is surprising for a lens of this design. I think I will look for VC or canon LTM alternatives at some point. Thank you for honest review.

Hey Matt, do you think this TTartisan 28 mm f.5.6 is a even sharper alternative for the (faster) Canon 28mm f/2.8 LTM-mount? I’m in doubt which is the best combination with my Fuji Xpro-3. I only want to use the 28mm for streetphotography in daylight. Of course the Fuji 27mm f.2.8 is another alternative, but it I dislike the looks, the looks ;)

Hey Jan, sorry my Canon 28/2.8 video is still overdue. The Canon should easily win for sharpness and 2.8. The TTA lens is a copy of the softer Summaron,.. but it does make nice photos I must say.

I have the elmar 35mm f3.5 lens, and that lens is smaller than this or the 35mm leica summaron. Because I have that I am reluctant to buy this, but I may in the near future just to have a 28mm in my arsenal. Price is good and its a real looker. Just gotta have that hood with it! Not a 28mm person but its good for landscapes etc.

Just bought this lens. As someone who shoots this type of lens almost exclusively using hyperfocal, beware - the DOF scale on the lens is completely wrong. If you are shooting at f11, use the markings for f8. I could not understand why all my shots were soft until I figured this out. Seems like they just copied the markings from a Leica lens without calibrating to their own focus ring.

Hey Matt, they may have changed the lens design, but I still see it as a copy. On the outside there is not much difference.......chinese copy it, we buy it and even some people recommend it. I rather stick to the original, picked one up this week, the best original lens for street photography: LOL

The test sample when out without a hood. They write that the hood is made of brass. It’s a copy of the Leica hood.

The amount of high quality information on the analog and digital black and white photography can give you severe headaches. It is wise to be aware that fine artistic photos can be made with old cameras without autofocus, manual filmtransport, TTL , HSS and non coated lenses. Though they are made in China

Yes, it's small, but... This looks like a really crappy lens. Maximum apperture is 5.6, and it's still vignetting at f8, not to mension the flare. What's the point of buying a Leica, and then settle for this? You can get a way better lens, with a maximum apperture of 3.5, or even 2.8, with an slr camera, for less money, if you buy a Minolta, or any of the other big five. And you just need an adapter to fit it on a mirrorless digital camera. On Pentax or Nikon dslr, you don't even need that.

Part of the appeal is it's small size. I love my Nikon 28 3.5 but + adapter it gets a bit long. This + adapter on my Fuji would still be small

Thanks Steve, they picked an easy lens to copy as the Summaron was designed to be optically flawed. But yes it is well made so it'd only a matter of time I guess.

They should just call it Leica instead of TT. Chinese companies have no shame in copying people products and claims to be the original one. A Japanese clothing company just lost a lawsuit to a Chinese copycat company that not only copy the product but use their name too.

Thanks Patrick! Nicely put haha. Yes it's based on the soft arty Leica Summaron and both lenses on digital give that heavier vignette look. The artist in me likes that.
