Ever wanted to try a Leica lens on Lumix camera!? I did some Leica R lens photography + Leica M lens photography using the Lumix S5 camera. Here is my first thoughts review of the Panasonic Lumix S5 Camera (DC-S5)(as a Leica photographer and the expectations that coming with using nice cameras)(Aka. I guess a critical review comparing some of the key features for Lumix S5 vs Leica. I bought the Panasonic S5 for photos mostly but as a KZbinr I will use for video too. Video explains how I use the Lumix S5 with Leica M lenses + Lumix S5 with Leica R lenses. I bought the Lumix S5 + Lumix 20-60mm kit lens but I plan to use mostly MF lenses. Video includes Leica R lens photos and Leica M lens photos with Lumix.

I love shooting vintage lenses especially using my Leica CL but I wanted a new full frame camera. After much thought and comparisons, I bought into the L mount alliance with a Panasonic S5. This is a fantastic camera. Yes it is different than the CL but that is a good thing. Vintage lenses are easy to use and I am having fun shooting the S5 manually with the same set up as yours. Both cameras make me smile.

Badges: Matt I enjoy your work in Flickr , I have many M mount VC and one Leica lens, been shooting all on my Sony , if the Lumix has the same sensor quality as a Leica M240 or M10 , then I can use it instead of an altered Sony camera to get that " better " resolution with my M mount lenses. I love the manual lenses , but miss a lot of images for shooting in a time consuming way. The flip screen is a huge deal , and if the M Lenses an R Lenses work , this is a peach ! Still yes , I want an M10 Monochrome so dearly , and the new .. film M body to use in portraiture and street / lifestyle work. This is genuinely a thoughtful review and also an exposition of self discovery for a Leica shooter as you are. I enjoyed this information .. Matt you have helped me greatly as my desire is using Vintage and Leica or other M and R , M42 , Exacta etc lenses. Old glass is good. Relevant and interesting perspective/analysis, thanks :) I am attracted to the Leica legacy as well, though I'd have bought the TL2 even if it had been made by Tesco because it's so stunning. I prefer the blurred cluttered background, though - I think that checquered background must be the ultimate distraction for a contrast AF system lol

Nice one Matt! I remember a time when the other Matt (Granger) used to be called “that Nikon guy” and he then went on to explore a ton of different brands on his channel. I think he has gone back to Nikon now but he just calls his channel by his name. Haha. Adapting wide angle lenses to mirrorless is what got me into an SL. The best resource I’ve found for researching how M lenses perform on mirrorless bodies is Reid Reviews. It’s a paid subscription but totally worth it! The corners do get soft with wide angle M lenses on mirrorless but for most folks it’s not a problem in real world shooting. I think architectural guys will find the Leica SL a better camera though because the sensor glass is still optimised for wide angle lenses which is not the case on Panasonic, Sony, Fuji, Nikon etc.

I appreciate your honesty about your love of Leica and the branding. It’s totally understandable. I also appreciate you delving outside the red dot realm to review other cameras and lenses. It is a fact that not everybody can afford the Leica ecosystem nor does their photography warrant such expenditures. I don’t doubt that Leica look results are amazing as you have shown. But there are lots of photographers out there who get beautiful shots from other brands. Thank you for the review of the S5. I am a Sony A7Rii shooter but would like to use more M mount and R mount older manual lenses. Looks like the S5 does a great job with these lenses. Sony is nice but the LUMIX seems to do better with people.

Thanks for the very interesting video. I have always been a big Panasonic Lumix user, with lots of Leica Panasonic lenses, so there has always been that connection between Leica and Panasonic in the lens designs. My biggest concern about bodies like the Leica LS2 is the weight - 2 lbs. So the alternate Lumix S5 at 1.58 lbs. is an alternative for getting into L mount. And I like the buttons...

Nice commentary... I liked what you said about branding... and the enjoyment of photography... I personally feel that anything that inspires someone to shoot is worth it... whether that is a particular brand or something else... for me personally the user interface and performance consistency is the most important... I am not that concerned by performance accuracy as long as any inaccuracy is consistent... give me a simple user interface and consistent performance and I am a happy shooter...

Excellent review. I've been holding my breath for the mythical CL2, but was looking at the SL2-S if a CL2 didn't arrive. Besides my CL, I have a Leica D-Lux 7 (Panasonic LX100 II) for a "pocket" camera, so the Pany menus are familiar, and I think I will buy the S5, as I don't want a hefty camera. That way, I may also have enough left in the kitty for a CL2, if one appears.

Matt - a really fair review. I had both the SL2S and Panasonic S5 for a few days. Normal images are difficult to differentiate. Love the articulating back screen and size of the S5. Ended up with the SL2S because: EVF resolution, muscle memory for the menu of the SL2 and CL, Color differences at high iso (SL2S is truer to actual colors at high ISO). The last item is particularly interesting for me, as I wanted the SL2S or S5 for high iso images where I give up resolution for image quality. Thank-you for the honest, straight-forward assessment!

I have to say that the last week or so, I've been looking at the Lumix S5 and it seems to be a VERY compelling camera! I had a Lumix GF9 (micro 4/3rds) and it put out some seriously nice looking photos for such a cheap camera. One thing that I didn't like too much is sometimes the pictures had a too sharp, too processed look to them. I chalk that up to however Lumix programmed their processing for the pictures. 99% of the time though they looked just right. I wonder if the S5 also has this type of too-processed look to the photos it puts out?

I have the S1, bought it in December 2023 as new for £750. Having used film for 34 years this is my first serious digital camera. It's great for learning about digital photography and does so much that I'll not use. I love the high resolution viewfinder and seeing the exposure in it is a great feature. The screen is also very high resolution for its time. It's damned solid and well made but I agree, it's not a Leica SL in looks. Menus are fine for me, pretty easy once you've had a little time. Mainly the sensor is very good, clean, natural colour, and I have sigma 40/1.4 and 28/1.4 hsm lenses with L mount. The image quality is better than I expected. These are very good lenses and the Panasonic sensor suits them well. But I would like a manual focus portrait lens from Leica or Zeiss for the colour.

Nice review. Leica glass and the manual experience will continue to go unappreciated by most AF devotees, but focusing a Leica lens will always be a treat for those who have experienced it. The ability to switch between modern AF Zeiss lenses for my A7iii and my old Leica M lenses and not sacrifice IQ is fantastic. The Lumix looks like a viable option down the road on the used market possibly for me one day if it's performance with adapters for M lenses is vastly superior to what can be currently achieved on a A7iii and if the high ISO is comparable.

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I had issues with wide angles (eg Zeiss 25/2.8) on anything then on Leica and probably CL. For some 35 is this sometimes the case, but 40mm and up worked pretty much OK.Think that the 50mm and further down is no issue due to lens focus is shifted more towards to the front of the lens.Asking this because of usage of M glass on FF and thickness of the optical glass stack in front of the sensor, where mostly leica cameras and lenses are optimized for the thin cover glass.

Very nice S5 review and how it can be applied with third party lenses. Any reason why you are using Leica R lenses on the S5 instead of Leica/Voigtlander/Zeiss M-mount lenses you already have? This said, I think it makes sense for someone who just gets into MLC with the S5 to vest into R lenses since their quality is excellent and prices are still moderate. But if you already have M lenses, I don't see my reason to go into the R-system with exemption of a longer R lens which you showed or if some wider M lenses suffer from thicker sensor glass of the S5. Biggest debit of the VF-2 EVF on the M 240 is that the focus magnification can't be moved from the center. So yes, every other MLC EVF zoom is better (already the one in my Sony A7R is miles better here). Have the same issue with my A7R that the functions are too hidden in badly structured Sony menus (on the other hand some functions are cumbersome to select on the M 240, too). What I would love to see is a 1:1 comparison between the Panasonic S5 and Leica SL using the same M lenses.

As a former Leica shooter back in the film days, I totally get the benefits of the brand. Nowadays, however, outside of the M everything is produced in collaboration with either Panasonic or Sigma, just with a Leica badge. Fo that reason I fail to see the benefits in this day and age. Hasselblad did something similar, the X-Pan and the H system are just re-badged Fujifilm cameras, as well as the full frame digital re-branding of the A-mount Alpha and the re-branded NEX cameras. I understand why small producers go down this path, but ultimately it devalues the brand. Whilst I use a number of different systems, ultimately those viewing the finished product have no idea what it was shot with, nor do the care.

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I think all us photographers care about gear, I have cameras that have been with me for years. The M6 and Leica glass is a true joy. I just don't get the same sense of pride in a product that just sports the brand but produced by others. Possibly the most important thing about gear is not the technology, not the specification, but how it makes you feel as a user. It is that feeling that translates to the finished work. A Leica M6 excites me, a Lumix with a Leica badge, not so much.

If you use great glass on that sensor, you will indeed get same quality level. I was quite pleased with my SL, and I think your Panasonic shares much with it. I am 100% with you when it comes to (excessive) buttons and ridiculously convoluted menus. Our DSLR friends do not mind, they deal with them daily, but for us minimalists it is tough. Even in the digital realm Leica managed to design a product focused on the photographer first, and leaving much of the high tech behind the scenes. They should be an example to all other brands, when it comes to menu simplicity and essential controls. Sony are indeed bad, Fujis are ok, Nikons not too bad on menus, not too great with buttons. That is probably the main reason (other than bulk) that I do not love DSLR options, I do find buttons/menus so distracting that they make my photography far less enjoyable (in spite of often great end results and sometimes superior technological level). P.S.: i would try manual focus for your video, the auto was going bonkers this time :-)

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I've possibly mentioned this before: Sigma just released a compact 28-70mmF2.8 to go with their fp, and it's only 470g compared with the 20-60mmF3.5-5.6 being 330g, I think. Speaking as an ex Nikon/Fuji/Sony/Ricoh user, now /Leica owner of M10's and Q2, Fuji by far and away has the best menu system of any camera on the market. It's clean, not overly complicated, but more importantly, at any point in the line, either from entry level to the GFX the UI is the same and the muscle memory you have on one camera is transferrable to any other. Leica is probably 2nd and they have been unifying their menus over time. But in all fairness, I think this is an area where Fuji wins hands down, besting all of the Japanese competition and Leica.
