Been looking at the Phyn for a while, but really interested to see a comparison between Phyn and Flo (Moen) as the Flo is quite a bit cheaper but seems to have the same functionality.

Flo seems to sell for $760 plus installation. Not sure that's a substantial difference....

Downside to Moen is the monthly fee, whereas you get everything for the cost of the Phyn.

What about if you also want to install a water pressure based sump backup? Will it know that if you are away? I suppose you could tape the sump pump before the phin but that system could leak.

1:00 What causes the pressure to jump around, instead of simply being inverse-proportional to the flow rate❓
@melanholly5 жыл бұрын
I guess that is because the pressure in the valve is moving. The valve has a lot of moving parts this generates the moving pressure diagram.

Are other people having access problems with Phyn support? I sent them a $250 deposit for a replacement device 6 weeks ago (warranty). Called today and was told I was in line behind another customer who's waiting for his replacement. Makes me wonder if I'm going to get his refurbished device....

To be clear ultrasonic flow sensors (I got one for my custom built reverse osmosis system.) aren't necessarily more accurate but they are more durable and require no maintenance. I do like well thought out tech like this but I also like to tone down the "smart" This isn't that much "smarter" than an Arduino it just has access to good sensors.

As a homeowner, I would love to have some of these smart home devices without connecting them to the internet. I saw Battlestar Galactica. Nothing good comes from being fully networked.
@Furiends5 жыл бұрын
@@HarryLovesRuth I am actually pretty familiar with networked systems as its my background. I totally understand the anxiety that comes with simply network connecting everything. But I think the overriding issue is that for as much as security is talked about its absolutely the last thought that goes into these commodity devices. Its in fact a definitive case against proprietary products or any products designed to collect data on you. In my view a wifi enabled smart devices even if they aren't supposed to be Internet accessible or talk to a server are just about equivalently susceptible to being hacked into if the home owners routing or modem hardware is itself insecure. Many cheap IP cams are compromised this way. It's a bit into the technical weeds but the solution here is ISPs that do security monitoring on ALL connections not just data centers, modern well supported modems and networking hardware and tested open network level authentication that can be used for VPNs or Internet facing services. However none of these items are hard from a technology point of view. We trust our bank account information and very personal information online but there are at least some little regulation on that. On home networks people are basically relying on a combination of IPs are hard to guess and security through obscurity. And as someone who does this for a living and does some at home hosting it takes diligence and broad know how to keep everything configured securely. It just shouldn't be like that. I don't wanna get to technical but the point I wanna hit home is that security is not a technology problem. Data breaches for example are primarily because companies got sloppy. It's a policy and business problem.

It's interesting to see this commercialized. I attended a lecture from a University of Washington researcher back in the late '90s where they were talking about the early stages of developing this tech. I always wondered if it had gone anywhere.

How does this compare to Flo by Moen? I know that Flo charges a fee for more detailed services but what else sets these two competing systems apart? I bet if I were to use each one for a while I’d have a definite opinion. Reliability, software integration, ease of use, longevity of installation, the option to manage multiple homes per account, there is a lot to consider here. Also, there is a disturbingly low view count on most of these videos and very few comments which gives me the idea that this is not very popular. If this is not in demand, these two products may not be on the market in 5 years. Personally, I’ve been looking for something just like this-let’s discuss the possibilities. Oh, one more point, can a homeowner install their own unit without issues and without voiding a warranty? Can an an entrepreneurial person like me join the Uponor program without being a licensed plumber first?

That's still the Doppler effect, you're just measuring it with phase shift rather than frequency shift.

@@danheidel Ah, nope, a phase shift is exactly the same frequency but slightly advanced or delayed wave (hence phase). The Doppler effect is a change in frequency/wavelength.
