Most comments are saying how complex it is, but compared to most firearms it is incredibly simple, which is really amazing. So much utility was managed to be done with so few mechanisms. Many people could design a bunch of individual machines to do each task, with many moving part, high complexity for the user and in maintenance, and low reliability. Yet this genius managed everything with such an efficient design.

Compare locking lugs that have to interface with a barrel extension, bolt carrier driven by piston that rotates the bolt, etc. Instead, you just move this little knob up and back, then front and down again, and everything just works. Edit: In terms of manufacture, yes on both of those, but like any other rifle there's plenty of other machines and work that go into it. Like you need to heat treat several parts, especially the springs. You need a tap and die to make screws, etc. Some of the parts are probably milled, everything has to be cut at some point. These are all standard.

Not that much of a genius. The bolt goes back to far, meaning the fire has to lower the rifke or turn his head away when operating it. The Lee Enfield though could be fired and operated without moving the head or lowering the rifle, giving a faster rate of fire.

The Mauser bolt action rifle was better for hunting and target shooting. The Lee Enfield bolt action rifle was better for combat, as it held twice as much ammunition and the bolt was quicker to cycle.

Rust is bad, but slow...caught in time, can be cleaned up and still be within tolerances...and some firearms have more tolerance built into their design, I for one would rather have a gun a smidgen 'loose' as opposed to one too 'tight'...it is amazing the difference between .001 and .0005...

I have owned close to 20 rifles with Mauser 98 actions both long and intermediate. Currently I have five I shoot regularly one an all original 1908 Brazilian in 7x57 the others have been barreled for modern cartridges. I also have had several 96 actions from Carl Gustaf to Husqvarna I kept one 6.5x55 Swede. They have withstood the test of time with a little tlc. Outstanding animation.

An absolute masterpiece. Picked up 3 ww2 era rifles recently and I figured out how to release the bolt on the SMLE and the Mosin and the M1 Carbine but had no idea that little side piece there kept it in and ejected spent casings. I adore American and German engineering.

Germany made a work of art, the Kar98 is a sniper with incredible precision, in our games everything happens in milliseconds and seeing little by little you can see that it has an incredible and perfect precision in its operation that are thought and thought of in all the features that made it faster and more accurate in shooting.
