Thank you Dakota, yeah both are really difficult industries. Creating it's the easy part, it's the getting it all organised ready to go i struggle with. Would love to have someone who did all those boring bits for me haha. How long have you been in theater? I used to dabble a little with acting.

TheGamingAssassin thank you so much. I’m so glad you enjoy my films. It’s the reason I make them. For this particular one it came from thinking about who is vulnerable to make a horror about. And people in labour are particularly vulnerable. But usually it just comes from what I would find scary. If it’s something I find scary then chances are other people will find it scary 😊 Thanks so much for watching! Will make another soon. So stay tuned. 👍🏻

Another great Short! I must ask a question here, Mr. Sears. Are you the person responsible for the Sound Design of your videos? Whomever it is should give a Master Class in how to professionally and properly use this medium. The reason I ask such a specific question is that many, many things I watch these days (shorts, documentaries, feature film, TV shows) have frankly lost their damn mind, or gone deaf, regarding the rational use of background music or SFX, i.e. it is so overpowering and predominant, the dialogue is lost in a sea of noise, or the volume has to be constantly turned up and down from scene to scene just to hear everything, and then to keep your ears from being blown out. It is EXTREMELY irritating and counterproductive. If the viewer is straining to make out dialogue over "background" music, or if the Sound Design is poorly balanced many of us just shut it off and leave with not only negative impressions, but obviously not recommending it. I'm utterly confused by this trend, and it just seems to get more prevalent. I apologize for such a long-winded rant, but I'm very curious what equipment you use, or how you manage to produce such excellence in Sound Design and the perfect balance, so I can know what to recommend to other creators. I have already sent links to your work as examples to others, but HOW you manage this expertise has me intrigued. You are one of the best overall I have seen in Shorts, but this aspect with your sound is better than many professional multi-million dollar studios, literally. Thank you for any insight you may be willing to share. And when you get that Feature you are heading toward, please ensure 'they' keep their hands OFF of the superb Sound you are so wonderful at achieving.
@MattSears6 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! It is indeed me who does the sound design. I must admit i've never considered myself a sound designer so thank you very much for this compliment, it's really great to hear (no pun intended). I completely agree, there's nothing worse than an overpowered sound effect or overly loud music, it really takes you out of the moment. When i create a film, i try to make the situation or scenario as real as possible. So this goes for sound as well. It's just about getting everything to sound real, so I try to get the sound effects to sound as if they were recorded on set. It sounds kinda obvious really. Otherwise it ends up sounding like a cartoon or old kung fu movie haha. Then with the music, i really think less is more. Your scene should be strong enough to create the drama. I think some people will just whack on a more dramatic piece of music, or turn up the volume to try and get that sense of drama if their scene isn't working. My audio equipment is normally pretty basic, usually a Rode directional mic on a boom, and an external recorder. And then i'll normally record both actors dialogue separately and mix. For this film it was actually really tricky as the actress was screaming so it would mix with the actors lines so trying to sort out levels in post was a bit of a nightmare. But i'm glad it turned out ok in the end haha. Ultimately, if you make films you have a vision of how you want your film to look, but you have to have a ''vision'' of how you want it to hear as well (i know thats not the best explanation ha). You just need to know exactly what type of music will enhance the scenes, and what sounds will really make the audience squirm. When i edit, i end up doing all the sound effects with my mouth. It's an incredibly annoying habit for other people to hear but i can't help it. Sound is so important to the process and often you can't get an idea of the impact of a scene without the sound. I hope this helps, thanks for watching and taking the time to write. it's really appreciated and really encouraging. Cheers,
@d4mdcykey6 жыл бұрын
@@MattSears ~ Hey man, thank you so much for the detailed response! I've never made a film, but as with so many, it has always been a dream of mine...perhaps some day, haha. However, I am a massive fan of the medium and spend an inordinate amount of time watching all kinds film, I just simply love the magic of what you artists do. I fully get what you are saying here, and yes, the 'dramatic piece of music' or soundscape some producers use is so bizarrely loud it makes me wonder how it ends up that way. As in, there must be a sit-down when they near the final product and watch the video with the crew or technicians, particularly big studios. How do they not notice this issue with sound? I wonder if they listen on equipment that is not comparable to what you would in your home? It is one of those mysteries I can't wrap my head around. In closing, the fact that you not only handle so many aspects of your video, but also have mastered the perfect sound is very impressive to say the least. I really appreciate you responding to my off-the-wall question, I've asked this sort of thing in other places and have never gotten any answer, so thanks again. I wish you all the best. When payday hits, a donation is on the way. Many people make Shorts, but what you have is Exceptional Skill, and this is a very rare thing indeed.

@@d4mdcykey No problem, if people take the time to watch your film and leave you a comment the very least you can do is reply! Thanks again for the great feedback and thank you even more for a donation, it's very much appreciated and however much it is will go a very long way! As for making a film, DO IT! You can get really good results even just using a camera phone these days. You can use simple lights or film outside. Then do all the sound in post! Just start small and make sure it's fun! I kind of saw this as like the beginning to an actual movie. Like maybe these two could have released some demon, and whenever the title “Give her Back” Came on at the end, that would’ve been the first few minutes of the actual movie where this happens and then the title comes on, and then it shows another family or something and now they have to deal with this demon.
