I think that's the best thing in the world: you read a new author, you're stunned how great they are and you realise they have plethora of books available.

Adrian Tchaikovsky is one of the best SFF writers alive and is horribly under appreciated. The guy pumps out work at an insane rate and they are all vastly different, interesting and high quality. Hoping his works start to get even more recognition!

@@rineeshparai1780 If you want some AMAZING fantasy, his series Shadows of the Apt is fantastic. The Empire of Black and Gold is a great read and the first in the series. I'm at the third book now and only took a break due to a lack of free time.

So happy you loved it! This was one of my favorite reads of last year, and I have a strong inkling that you’d love another of his sci-fi series that’s just a duology, Dogs of War. I have enjoyed the Children of Time sequels so far and I actually just started the third and final one.

Tchaikovsky writes incredibly well. I read this a while ago and for some reason a lot of things make me think of this. Everyone that likes non-standard Sci-Fi should read this.

If you enjoyed this book you should check out A Deepness in the Sky by Vernor Vinge, which also features an evolving alien spider species and similar narrative structure. I initially wrote off CoT as a ripoff, before developing a greater respect for Tchaikovsky. Deepness and the other two Zones of Thought books are some of my favorite books, all 3 are fantastic.

Glad you liked the book as much as I did. The development of the 'alien' society was truly fantastic. Mixed in with the tense, ever changing generation ship coming to a collision course was brilliant. I hear some of the criticism of other reviewers: a biology lesson mixed in with a far more interesting human story, but I just don't get it, I found every perspective interesting

Just finished this one too, coincidentally. I loved the spider POV chapters, but wished the human characters had a little more to them. Reading the sequel rn! (Octopuses > spiders)

I had the same issue with one half being much more interesting than the other, but thankfully the sequels don't share that problem. Excellent series overall.

I absolutely loved the planet side storyline, but the ship part of storyline really made it drag for me. It has been quite awhile since I read it and every time a review pops up about this book I think I should go back and reread it, maybe I missed something.

I also enjoyed the spider society. I thought everyone else was kind of boring. I read this one and Symbiosis around the same time and I loved the intelligent plant in that story. I don't know why I never finish either series. Maybe I'll pick it back up if it's chosen as a future buddy read.

I finished Children of Time last week. I thought it was really fun. A lot happens over the course of the book and over the course time. 😂 Btw, I’m most of the way through Children of Ruin. If you haven’t read it yet, you’re in for a sequel with just as much excitement.

You mentioned that Sci-Fi books in general don't do much character development - but I disagree, in part. Sci-Fi novels tend to lack *individual* human character development, but individual humans by and large are not the main characters - humanity as a whole and technology are.

Tchaikovsky has an incredible imagination. I've read about 8 of his books and really enjoyed every one of them. I thought Children of Ruin wasn't as good, but close. There were a lot of parallels with CoT so it was still enjoyable. I just didn't like the characters as much.

I didn’t enjoy it unfortunately. I was pretty bored with the book after 1/4 of the way through. I think the time jumps hurt the story and it would’ve helped to have a human POV that wasn’t put under and as time goes by maybe we could see their future generations take their place and give a more grounded perspective of what’s happening to humanity in that time. The spider POV just didn’t hold any interest to me. I think my sci fi love is more the space opera style rather than hard sci fi but glad for everyone that enjoyed it

Imho Ruin is far superior to Time. If you thought spiders are so different from humans just wait for the species in Ruin. And there's also a huge cosmic horror aspect and a junkie computer. Loving Ruin over Time is unpopular opinion among the fanbase. I don't get it as I didn't enjoy the human chapters in Time. Ruin fixed all the weak points. Children of Memory is a complete garbage, though. I would recommend Dogs of War from his sci-fi, especially if you're a dog person.

You need to add 6 star reviews or 5+, because you rate way too many books 5 stars. It has lost all value.
