I’m dying to hear the update on this. I know Matt prefers gas for the off-road rigs but an LBZ / Allison combo with the military axles would be killer. Imagine if all three axles had steering ? At least two winches on the deck with two more on the sides, one in front and one wedged between the frame in back. I imagine a wheel lift would get wrecked off-road. Can’t wait to see this project from start to finish ! Be safe.

I’m pretty sure that was already the plan for those axles. You may have noticed that the derby car was sitting in the tow yard and it wasn’t already destroyed so I think it’s safe to ASSume that the potato truck was already in the yard when the axles were delivered. Just a hunch. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I have an idea for your Spud truck… get a couple of salvageable 3 door suburbans and use them (from the B pillar back) to match the width of the truck cab. Then remove the back of the spud cab and Nate the cab to the morphed (or rather, ‘MORRphed’) suburban. This could provide ample seating for crew, dogs, or customers. The suburban wheel wells could be turned onto a place for a toolbox, winches, or replaced with properly shaped sheet metal. Make a deck so the back of the suburban can be reached as it could store ropes and such. Still plenty of room behind that for the world’s first off-road rotator boom… If interested I will send a rendering.

You won't be able to steer with locks on the steer axle, that's why the Mfgs don't offer steer axle locks on modern 4x4's. I've driven 6x4 (no power steer axle) cement mixers with both rear axle locked in and it took 3 football fields to get it to turn, with 4 sets of dual tires pushing it straight ahead. So with the mixers, you don't lock in the rear axles until you get stuck and can't move. Then you lock them in to get unstuck (hopefully), get moving again, and unlock them on the move so you can steer until you hit the next bog. Even with the locking rears you usually end up hooked to a heavy chain to a front end loader or excavator... Have fun!

I'm a big fan of old school trucks. You have proven that you can build truly amaising rigs by compleatly changing most things around. I would love to see just what you can do keeping the origional engine and transmision! You could add a doubler to reduce the gearing or somthing like that, but keep the old power plant to let people see what it can do. Having all the power makes it easy to do a lot of things. But back when these trucks where new, thant wasn't an option and the old farmers done amaising things with them.

Good idea for keeping the build simple and cheap yet cool and retro. Those trucks were also offered with a Detroit diesel 8.2L 4 stroke V8 also called the penny pincher. Very fuel economical. They were used in those trucks and industrial applications alot including the marine world, with some making up to 300hp with a turbo reliably; if you stud the engine and put the right head gaskets in it and keep it cool they are great engines. And since parts are off the shelf it can keep it simple. Then just put the 6x6 axles underneith and i think a rollback flatbed on the back would work great for recovery and keep it clean and retro.

The 8.2 Detroit was a weak kneed worthless piece of crap from day 1. Parts availability today sucks! 8.3 Cummins or 3126, or 3176 CAT. Only worse choice of an engine than the Detroit would be the Duramax.

I have 30 years experience with these 30' chevys. 2 new ones every 5 years at Gramps logging company. Best bet is have HOOD put a big loader with down riggers on it. We just ran 2wd with extra tag axle on airbags. When i needed more traction i would suck air out of bags lifting the extra roller rear axle up off the ground going from 2x6 to 2x4. When i needed more traction, or to move myself and others i just use the loader to pull myself along, or also turn myself around in a 360. Maybe to heavy for what youre doing, but this truck needs a loader behind the cab. Logging truck style goes anywhere

Planning on putting a NV4500 Transmission with overdrive, if that doesn’t give me enough top end a different rear end. Matt I’m now adding you to the list of KZbinrs that I’m am giving full credit for influencing me to build this truck.

I have a C-50 2WD of that style we used for many years hauling cars scrap and otherwise. I'd have loved to score your truck to transfer my Chevron bed. Your truck would be mighty handy with a steel (aluminum is to get across DOT scales, it's far too delicate for rough work) rollback and the chassis is long enough to mount side pullers with a PTO-driven hydraulic winch or winches. An off-road rollback would be a moneymaker like any rollback and haul vehicles to trashed to flat tow (besides bringing home all sorts of cool stuff like machine tools. If you want an aluminum rollback you can fix old ones by bolting on steel channels after cutting off trashed cracked aluminum channel.

With the amount of multiple piece toolkits Matt buys on trips like this he should've had enough for a basic vehicle toolkit per vehicle. Hell, even a quality multitool could work wonders like I've found using my Gerber MP800. I wouldn't be suprised if Matt donates the kits he's bought to various people...

Watching you drive that thing reminds me of roading the water hauler when I worked construction. I was the only crew driver that had a CDL, everyone else had to have their water haulers transported, but I could drive it wherever. Not sure I _should_ have, since even less worked on it than you've got working on that thing, but it went. I did find out how fast it could go one time. I had always assumed top speed was 45, so imagine my surprise when somebody followed in a pickup one time and I found out it actually topped at 65. I think 45 was its top speed _in reverse;_ it had a second stick that went lo-hi-reverse so the main stick could still go through all 5 gears in reverse, though the ratio was lower. It was a 1979 Mack, formerly a concrete truck I think, and I have no idea how they got it to pass DOT inspections. I assume shenanigans. That old water hauler drove on the rear axles like that thing, though the wheelbase was a lot shorter. It actually wasn't bad off-road, as far as getting stuck. It rode rougher than that thing when it was empty, but put 16 tons of water in it, it'd drive a bit better.

As I posted over on Robby's channel, I feel you, Robby, Paul, Rory, and all of your crews are totally insane in a good way. You guys know how to have fun, but you get very serious when you need to get a job done, whether it is recovery, bodywork, or other demanding work. My hat is off to you guys. Of course, I live in relatively flat South(ern New) Jersey so you doing rock crawling and transversing almost non-existent trails seems like craziness to me. There isn't much recovery work in my area, but people do get stuck out on the beaches on the Atlantic Ocean at times, or the various sandy dirt roads that crisscross this part of the state. Stay safe and keep producing these great videos.

Like the military truck you once drove this truck would be a 6x6 you would need another 2 axels to be a 10x10 just for informational purposes. Just heard it has no drive to the front axle so it would be a 4x4 based on the number of axles not tires.

The word technology derives from the Greek word techne meaning art, skill, or know-how. The MORR team are technicians in this ancient sense of the word. I marvel with envy how Matt and Tom maintain such equanimity in a breakdown and even seem to relish it as an intellectually stimulating puzzle whereas my world comes to an end if I have to pull over because I barely know how to pop my hood and use my roadside assistance app. Thank you for letting me vicariously partake in your mechanical achievements!
