Ppl are being tortured, and enslaved as I write this, somewhere, and by ruling organizations, and governments. Spanish Inquisition? That's just one example out of thousands.

This is one of the greatest castles I have ever been I always wanted to visit the castle I loved it how it was used for Count Orlok castle in Nosferatu A Symphony Of Horror cause it was one of the best and greatest Dracula films of all time so that’s why am really wanting to visit the castle

The ruin he moved on is in Germany. The Salzspeicher of Lübeck. The house were Greta waited for Jonathan coming back still stands in Bremen. It has not changed at all. Also Westgermany. The scenes with Greta on the beach in the dunes is on Sylt, a west German island. That place Harker started from is in the east of Germany, in Wismar, at the Heilig Geist church. I have to think if I know about more places in the film. I adore this castle here and hope I will see it on day.

Second castle in Slovakia where Nosferatu was filmed is "Starhrad" and its a nice hike from village of Strečno (few kilometres from town Žilina). Sometimes it is called "Old Strečno Castle" don´t mistake it for "New Strečno Castle" which is on other side of the river Vah and much closer to village. On Vah there is also way how you can raft the river (like in the movie), it´s very cool. Stream is pretty fast. You can sleep in some hotels in Žilina (there are cheaper ones too) and if you really like to walk and hike, you can go by your feet to Starhrad, it´s maybe like 5-6 hours of walk but beautiful nature. If you don´t like to walk to Strečno rides train and bus from Žilina and also from Vrútky (town on the other side of mountains "Small Fatra") (train is much faster).

And as I stated before, the creator of the work is dead, those left are collecting money they did NOTHING to earn.

@@ZnenTitan In 1922 it wasn't a cinematic masterpiece. The way Stoker's representatives (correctly) saw it, it was a film that deliberately violated ownership and copyright laws. I mean, if I decided to do a film about David Bowie and used his music without permission, it wouldn't matter how good the film was - I'd be taken to court . . . and I'd lose.

@@RetroAP In modern times, people shouldn't be thinking they can get away with violating copyright laws. Maybe the film wouldn't be ordered to be destroyed, but it would be seized and not allowed to be released, broadcast, or seen - which renders pointless the reason to even make the film in the first place. I think we both agree that the whole "money thing" can be a miserable, greedy mess. Decades ago, a company obtained the rights to make a film of The Fantastic Four. They couldn't get the millions of dollars needed to make the film, but they had to start production by a certain date or their filming rights would expire. They were looking for a way to hold onto the rights so no-one else could get them. They hired Roger Corman to make the film and gave him a tiny budget. The scheme counted on Corman being unable to deliver a film on a minuscule budget but, having begun production by the obligated date, they could hold onto the rights. The plan/scam hit a snag when Corman - the master of low budget films - delivered a film. As Corman soon discovered, there was never any plan to release his film. The producers were counting on him to not deliver a film. It was always a scheme to hold onto the rights, nothing more. So, the film was never released.

Damn i am slovakian guy living here for 33 years but had no idea that Nosferatu (one of my all time favorite old horror movies) was filmed here! I was always thinking it was just some kind of Hollywood studios omg :). Sure i could Google it and find it out, but i am simply not such movie fan in general. Nosferatu was a German film. Before WW2, most great films came from Germany. Hollywood wasn't so important in the industry.

I have been and I can confirm that you have to have a head for heights. The tour can take about 3 hours and there is never a dull moment, I really loved this castle.

Well, it's a castle, what would you expect? They were built on hilltops or outcrops for obvious defensive purposes, and very often the shape of the rocky outcrops dictated the disposition and shape of the castle elements {unlike today, when architects simply level everything in their path - see as an example how downtown Seattle, USA, was altered and flattened), thus necessitating a lot of staircases to connect the uneven parts.

I watched this for the first time yesterday. I saw Salem's Lot when I 12 years old in 1980. Both movies were so freaky. The 1922 Silent Film was more than just that however; it definitely was ahead of it's time.

I was born in '68, so we are roughly the same age. My intro to this vampire was the 1979 (?- I think...)film that featured Klaus Kinski. In the Delaware Valley, where I grew up, this remake was shown on the pay channel called Prism in 1980. I looked forward to seeing it... Shadow of The Vampire ? I'd have to re-watch it, because I don't recall that I enjoyed it all that much. But it's premise is a great idea; I wasn't THAT taken with the flick itself... I have an idea for you & I'll give you the KZbin links in a follow-up message.... But, do you remember CBS Radio Mystery Theater in the '70s & early '80s ? The intro features a creaking door, after which host E.G. Marshall says, "welcome", with a brief synapses of the episode that is about to follow. They ran from '74- '82 and featured 1,399 original radio shows within that timespan. They're a lot of fun to revisit, and if you didn't listen in the 1st time around, you're in for a treat ! My wife & I listen to at least a few of 'em a week. In bed & in the dark, IMO, is the best way to enjoy these. Again, I'll select a few of my favorites & post 'em soon for you, k ? All of 'em were good, for the most part. The 1st few I'll send are among my favorites- no duds for ya- I want you to start off on the good foot....😎

Very nice video! I was quite surprised that people know about our castle in Orava and that they find it´s history awesome, although I was a bit disappointed that you did not mention how Alžbeta (Elizabeth, the lady in black) used to punish her servants, by beheading them and leaving just their bodies on the main square for other servants to see, while nobody knew what she did to her their heads.

Awesome video! Orava Castle was only used for exteriors for Nosferatu. After Murnau finished shooting on location in Slovakia, he moved production to Wismar and Lubeck. Castle interiors were created at Jofa Studios in Berlin. Same for Hutter's house. Nosferatu had a shoestring budget, so location shooting was cheaper than building unnecessary sets. It also added authenticity, which really adds to the movie. They did the best with what they had. It turned to work well in their favor. They couldn't even afford more than one camera to shoot with. They don't make masterpieces like this anymore! :)

WOW WOW WOW!!!1 I LOVE THIS!!!! IT reminds me of Bran Castle in a lot of ways! It is the castle Bram Stoker used as reference when he wrote Dracula. I got to go there during my time in Romania. These structures are so magnificent. Can you imagine living in a place like this?! I remember watching this film in my film class in college (more years ago than I care to admit) ha ha. That's so cool that you were there. I loved your editing between the location and the film and the information you found was amazing! Well done!!! Particularly liked how the many movie scenes were shown from the same angles. I also appreciated the explanation of German Expressionism, with a nod to "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari," one of the best examples of the movement in cinema, I believe. For actual examples of the art form on film, "Dr. Marbuse, the Gambler" has some awesome pieces displayed in the mansion set. Thanks for posting!!

I think the reason you couldn't recognise any of the interiors is that the ones seen in the film were shot in a studio in Berlin. There had to be space for actors and film crew to operate without getting in each other's way plus the technology of the day wouldn't be up to the job of filming interior shots without strong lighting. That's also the reason that all the night scenes in the film are actually shot in daylight and then usually tinted blue.

Those wells that had coins in. They were probably cisterns, but could have been oubliettes too..dungeons with trapdoor entrances where they left people to die. That is one of the coolest castles I have ever seen.

I am watching this in 2020 during the coronavirus epidemic. I’m surprised that I never noticed this show before. You did a fantastic job, especially putting the movie clips in with your footage. Thank you for your hard work. Usually my husband and I decorate for Halloween and give out candy on Halloween night, but we will not be doing that this year because of the virus. I am so disappointed to be missing Halloween this year, but programs like this help make up for it.

I'm sure someone else will have mentioned this in the comments but the interiors weren't shot in the castle which is why you had trouble finding them 😂 they were shot on studio sets back in Germany. This is an excellent video though, you did an amazing job tracking down the locations. I'm extremely jealous, Nosferatu has been my favourite film since I first saw it in my teens. I've always wanted to check out the castle. Maybe one day.

Some researchers think the origin of word vampire (probably from serbian in Stocker's book) comes from slovak upír (but in fact it's not slovak but old slavic from pagan times which exists in slovak or czech languages without changes more then 1 000 years). Stocker's Dracula character was by some researchers inspired by countess Elisabeth Bathory. Many of his "attributes" are not presented in original story about Vlad Dracula, but they are in the story of "bloody countess". Elisabteh Bathory is in Guiness book of records - her storry is horror alone without Dracula. Elisabeth life (ofcourse with her story and legend) is connected with Čachtice castle and Čachtice village (western Slovakia and Little Carpathian mountains). This castle is also one of places where was filmed popular comedy in Czechoslovakia "The mystery of the castle in the Carpathians". :)

Nosferatu (word) The name "Nosferatu" it's a Romanian word, synonymous with "vampire". However, it was largely popularized in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by Western fiction such as Dracula (1897), and the film Nosferatu (1922). 😉

A simply stunning locale. And what makes it even more so ? When you consider the time period it was built.... Not even a steam powered piece of anything to rely upon... And I use 'steam' as an example for even by today's standards, steam is now considered old tech, like as in a steam shovel- the excavator of it's day- only of 100+ years ago and this was built WAY, WAY before that. The scaffolds, ropes, block & tackle to create any one section must've been a building design engineer's nightmare, given how it was constructed in the side of steep terrain. And artisans breaking their backs where skill was needed. Those doing jail time were probably used as labor. Who knows ? Slaves might've been put to use, but I don't pretend to know about such things in that part of the world, at that time or any other. Just an amazing feat that should be considered a monument for all mankind and it's capabilities. My God, what else does one say about this extraordinary place ? Other than F.W. Murnau sure knew how to pick 'em when it came to "being on location". Even in it's 1921 graininess, the place shines on through film's shortcomings, inherent of the period. And besides, they're never find a spookier vampyre to put up in that shack... 😎

You probably don't recognize any locations inside the castle, because interior scenes were mostly shot in a studio set. The place looks really worthwhile visiting though.
