I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I've been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I've qualified for six MLF Championships and won roughly a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.

When I first started back bass fishing I promised myself I would fish everyday for one year- trying to make up for lost time and get to where I could've been if I never stopped. Anyway- I would get up everyday at 4 am and be on the water at sunup. I saw.... well, you know what I saw- it's unexplainable. I can tell ppl all about the sunrise or the way the dragon flies where skipping across the water which looks like a big purple/pink piece of glass- but until they're out there plugged into the the rhythm of the chop when the world wakes up, they don't get it. Took me 30 years to "get it" myself- or maybe it just took that long to slow down enough to notice it- tight lines.

Sounds like your talking about the Potomac because it has all of the above 😂 The thing about fishing that place is that a crank bait can be very helpful but more often than not in the Potomac you find the majority of catfish using that bait. The grass edges are so very important in that particular fishery that I do not even pick up a crank anymore for the simple fact that I waste so much time dealing with catfish, spinners are different in which the snakehead also like the bait but they are not the majority when searching with a spinner, the Zoom speed worm and the brush hog are two of my favorites when you need that approach and a lot of times the pressure the fishery gets actually has me going straight to the worms/creature baits. As always great information Matt and thank you !!

It’s interesting that Bass Fishermqn use the term grass line. When 75% of the aquatic vegetation is not actually a grass (monocot) but a broadleaf (dicot- multileaf) such as milfoil.

I fish a lake that is normally overtaken with weeds. I fished it long enough to where I got the hang of it. This year the conservation killed it off. Now that it's gone I'm out searching for deep weed lines. Funny cause I always complained about the grass. I fish it exactly like you explained except in a diffrent order. I start with spinnerbait to locate and than pick it apart with jig and texas rig. In shallow water weed lines I search with a booya prank. Most people laugh when I say that, until they fish with me. That booya prank is deadly running on top of grass.

Matt, Great video and tips as always. I had a fishing tournament yesterday. It was not that hot of a day and the water temp was about 75 F. I caught two good size bass in shallow water. I fought them for a while before getting them in the boat. For some reasons, those two bass had the tedancy to turn on side grasping for air. They were not over inflated. I heard that when that happens that I should put some weights in the lower frontal fins. Do you have tips to keep bass alive in the livewell? Sorry if my English is not that good. I am a French Canadian who seldom write in English. Thank you.

1/2 oz to 3/4 oz depending on the depth. On Geneva you probably will want a 3/4

first, love the vid, thanks for doing this. second; i have so many questions, on our crystal clear lakes where the grass grows out to 25 feet or more, is this applicable? it seems to me many of the lakes i fish the grass grows very deep and there isn't much for bottom composition changes so there isn't much for a grass edge, it just gets less and less dense till its kinda done around 30ft, with nothing resembling an edge. Is there something you can key in on on these style lakes or is it just find the depth holding fish and run it, because i struggle with this every summer.
@MattStefanFishing
@MattStefanFishing 3 жыл бұрын
Id spend a lot of time idling and scanning looking for something within the grass like a rock line, bare spot, or baitfish if there were no defined weedline points or edges.

When you're fishing that worm I know you mentioned getting it down to the bottom but at first are you trying to keep it on top and targeting the active fish? Curious how to progress with it. I normally will live and die by jigs out on weed lines and need some more tactics. I Texas rig a lot of craws but want to get into worms a bit more. Ever do senkos/trick worms?

Good video idea! Two structures i look for on tannic flowage s up north are wood and green cabbage. They will hold majority of fish. They are in 8ft or less normally. I usually choose a topwater for smallies and a black/blue jig for largemouth.

No largemouth in the Turtle. I d have a shot if that were the case. The smallies have me stumped. I can find them on stumps but can only get them to bite jig and live bait. I’ve caught 1 on a drop shot And I’m 41 and being fishing this water since I was a kid. You are correct. Most fish are in 8ft. Thanks for advice.
