I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I've been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I've qualified for seven MLF Championships and won over a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.

Modernized approach: lose the jig head. Try a free rig! Use your favorite Fusion 19 hook and the appropriate weight size for the depth (e.g. 1/4oz or 3/8oz). The bait has such a perfect hover/fall each time you pop it. The hula part acts like a parachute. The sinker brings the bait down with speed, then when the sinker hits the bottom -- poof the bait decelerates and slowly hovers down. Great triggering action. You can also slide a bobber stop up your line if the weight is separating too much for your liking. It depends how fast you want to fish it and whether you're target fishing (e.g., docks) or covering water. Try it!

Thats a bait that brings back some great memories, I once had a birds nest in my reel and it took what seemed forever to get out, once I did I went to reel the bait back in and a fish still had it for I dont know how long but I made the cast to the right side of the boat when I reeled it in it was completely on the other side of the boat. Im like you, great memories with that bait, gotta get back to using them! By the way that fish was a 5.8lb largemouth

A couple years ago, a man cast his bait and lost his grip. I offered him a spare pole, but he refused. I think he was afraid of losing it, too. An hour later, his little boy snagged something. He reels it in, and there are two trout and a fishing line on the two-hook rig. Starts pulling on the snagged line, and here comes the dad’s pole. So they separate the tangle and reel in the dad’s line, and there’s two more trout. So the kid got four trout and his dad’s lost fishing pole on a single cast.

When I was first introduced to this lure it was in Arkansas and it was the Chompers Hula Grub. This was at least 15 yrs ago. It soon became my favorite bait and used it on lakes and rivers. I still have gotten away from this, but still have them in my boats for days when the fishing gets tough. I had not though much about dragging in on a football head but will try this approach this year.

They're an absolute must have in New Hampshire and have been for a long time. I remember fishing a tournament years ago where everyone was fishing them and literally about nothing else. The old Northern Bass Supple used to have a huge selection of the Yamamoto colors, and they sold like crazy. I was able to get a few of those old school packs you showed, and I got a few really good smallmouth on them last year with them. I'll always have them in the boat!

Hey Matt, I been fishing Hula type grub lures for over 25 years now, and a few years back I started cutting them up and mix matching the skirt and grub parts by heat welding them together with a candle, I learned that a brown skirt with the green pumpkin twin tail combo is a killer for largemouth & spotted bass, I mostly use Arkie style and Round Ball weedless jig heads 1/4 & 3/8 size , they work really good when cut down and used on finesse jigs too, I have caught many fish on this lure !!!

I have used the spider grub before the Gary Yamamoto produced them. It was called the Triple S grub. It dominated the tournament trailer when the bite was tough. I won a 80 boat series my first year fishing this bait 80% of the time. Best color hands down in the 297. I have fished them all. The Watermelon Red is great in the spring but if you could only have 1, 297 is THE one. Fished on a shakey headis best.

I really already have a ton of plastic, yet I think I now have a couple more packs to pickup. Kinda reminds me of an oversized fuzzy grub if you squint your eyes. LOL

I really enjoyed this video! Believe it or not I used to use this bait on a under spin with a small blade and got laughed at for setting it up that way.. I would make long cast in shallow water and burn it back to the kayak and alot of the time it got bit and changed my day! Great video thanks for sharing Matt! 👍🎣

Hey Mr Stefan when I started getting serious about bass fishing the plastics I first started using yamomoto single tail grubs , hula grub , and a tube bait. hey Mr Stefan check out the hula grub jigheads that yamomoto has he uses owner hooks but I have a whole bunch of the Matt Stefan guppy heads and I never thought of swimming the hula grub good video I agree with you how the hula grub is a forgotten bait .Mr Stefan I can't tell you how many bass I caught on the single tail grub, hula grub, Gary's crawfish bait's, thousands and thousands of bass over the years. Thanks for your great videos and the content is suberb, awesome, outstanding, key information all the time. God bless you and your family your pal fisherman Mike. Ps tell your son great job showing us the lures in the last video.

I use to sit with. Gary Garland and make lots gitez and there is a real funny story how Bobby and Gary came up with the tube bait. But the tube bait was the stepping stone for the spidergrub. Used out west on the Colorado River probably before you were born. But anyways I just came across your channel and I think you've got a very good Channel with a lot of good information. Good job keep it going bro. But both of them Garland brothers were the ones responsible for that.

What a small world it is, I too spent a LOT of time on Lawrence lake growing up, it's where my grandpa taught me to fish and still to this day over 40 years ago I caught my pb bass of 6 lbs. right across the bridge in the pads on Meyers lake. My grandparents owned the brown and limestone 2 story just to the right of the boat ramp ( looking at the lake from the ramp), and later built the house between the ramp and said house. Sooo many awesome memories of Lawrence lake! Keep up the great content!

Yes! Was throwing the single tail GYB Hula Grub last year and did well. I think I was throwing it on a Ned rig head; exposed hook. Clear color with some red and silver flakes.

I have been very loyal over the years to the brands I have chosen to fish bass with. Loomis Rods, Shimano reels, Megabass hard baits, and Yamamoto soft plastics. I have never strayed from any of them because they work for me very well. With that said I’m very interested to see what the new owners (with deep pockets) do with Yamamoto baits and the fishing industry in general. I imagine🤔 sponsorships are in the plans.🍺
@MattStefanFishing
@MattStefanFishing 2 жыл бұрын
We will see what they do with the company. Hopefully not run it into the ground. Yamamoto makes some great baits. As for sponsorships it will be interesting. they dont sponsor many people as it is so i doubt they step that up. Im a berkley soft plastics guy through and through, but i do love a hula grub!

I love hula grubs- just started throwing them this season- in other words, a couple weeks ago- but they rock. I have a blister pack of skirts made by Reins that you can slip on any hook and fish with any plastic- but if you pair it with a double tail grub- you've got a traditional hula grub. They're available at the Hook-up Tackle- were anyway, may be sold out now. I pair them with craws sometimes- any creature bait you want to add some bulk and secondary action to- they work great.

Haha I wondered about this, I was like I love the hula grub lol and it does work everywhere. It's a classic bait, and I was like he must of just forgot and it happens to all of us. Your story at that age is similar to mine, spinnerbaits were my thing and my soft plastics were berkley power worm and a yamamoto hula grub. I just replenished mine and I have never quit using them. Jig and pork some other classics I used. Thanks for sharing your story 👍

I've caught a lot of fish working them pretty aggressive. I think they're a good bluegill imitator, fishing them kind of aggressive with some small rod snaps like a little soft jerk bait or swim jig. As you said, they just kind of fell by the wayside for me as I had success with new things. I think it's time to put some back in the bag :)
