I realized a lot of persons are talking about blackface. "Jab Jab" or "Jab Molasse" is in no way a Caribbean form of blackface. Jab comes from the French word “Diable” which means “devil”. Ex-slaves painted themselves and dressed up as the devil when storytelling and role playing as slaves owners. It represented the cruelty and evilness of slave owners. It was their way of reflecting on their experiences which is what traditional "Mas" like this is all about.

Funny thing is how context is lost with time.. their former kings and tribal leaders sold them Into slavery... Money/possessions have owned man for a long time...

@Jay Aleem it wasn't conflict it was self enrichment. You have to realize how the human psyche is affected by positions of power and wealth, it's almost always 'crippling'. I'm not making this up. Wealthy Europeans went to the 'top African officials' of the time, they made a good deal, and sold their own people.. finance, marketing, and business... but if you want to really say that, the first 'known slavery trade' was actually Europeans on Europeans, the slaves of Barbary.. but lets be honest, slavery still exists to this day, and just because it wasn't recorded doesn't mean it wasn't happening, at every corner of the earth.... it's not like magically humans of a certain place are/were immune to this behavior, (as there is only humanity as a whole period.) this is the human condition for at least a few thousand years now. In this recent epoch of civilization. I mean, understand, it's still happening everywhere on earth. Obviously. (as it seems in recent findings, technology, civilization, is cyclical or at least has taken place at various points in human history, beyond the current accepted paradigm, ie, beyond a few thousand years. Just pointing that out do to my current civilization epoch comment, with given context to how humans have been behaving globally for a few thousand years now. seems something changed in that time)

Exactly my family’s hometown in Mexico throws a month long parade and celebration where many people come from out of town. A lot of people leave during this time because they don’t want to deal with the influx of tourists and traffic does that mean they’re racist?

what an awesome video, I had never heard of caribana before and I love the attitudes and the honesty and the obvious joy of the celebration they shared with him! I totally feel Matty on leaving town when the festival comes though, I grew up in a tiny town that had a festival once a year and even that tiny little crowd was too much for me. I'd probably leave when something that big came to the city too, even if it was white-people-palooza. BUT, I completely understand why the festival-goers would see it as racism, there is a certain systemic behavior that makes them feel segregated and they ARE segregated when they go to the festival. I wonder where other festivals of the area happen.

1.3 million people getting loud and having a good time do need a space, away from others. Doesn't sound like a devient, racist plan. In Northern Ireland we have to endure the Orange parades and St Patrick's day chaos because there is no where good for it. They want to force my culture and celebration on everyone, inner city and up residential areas. Road blocks, extreme noise polution all hours. This sounds like good planning, a great festival, happy people and a happy city.

For some, avoiding the festival might be about overt racism- they don't think they can get anything of value from the festival and they dislike the culture and people. For others, I think they are a little shy and don't want to go without a friend that can act as an ambassador and explicit invitation to join in, because they don't want to seem like they're encroaching on what other cultures might explicitly want to keep for themselves and not dilute to seem more palatable to the uninitiated. Though not white, I would be an outsider despite having recent ancestry related to carribbean people. I have to figure out the right way to reach out and learn and participate, I think.

As someone who lives in a city that hosts two obnoxious rich people festivals a year, I will confirm that just having a bunch of tourists flood your city sucks, is tiring, and just makes you want to leave or completely shut yourself in your house until they all go back home so they can brag on their instagram about seeing bands that nobody cares about. That being said, I think this particular festival would be pretty damn neat and a blast to attend (but then I would feel guilty about being the annoying tourist, haha)!
