My eyes went full of water. Even after playing blockbusters like God of War, Uncharted and The Last of Us, Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow remains as my favorite game of all time. I read the interview in the past, saw the screenshots, but didn't knew there were playable levels like this. It's insane to think what this game could have been.

Interesting points I've seen: - SNES sprites. Considering the SNES' version of Maui Mallard was launched after the original Genesis/PC version, is possible that some sprites and other GFX from the SNES version would be used in the sequel. - Pirate theme. Looks like the shipwreck level on the first game (and the realm of the d...d) was kind of a foreshadowing of what will would see in the sequel. Maybe this sequel could also set up a third chapter, making a Maui trilogy. - Considering Maui has a muddrake pal, the story won't happen in a totally new place, but maybe in the other side of the same island of the first game. And the subject might be of interest to the muddrakes, like a curse or something like that.

The SNES version of Maui was finished in parallel with the original Genesis\Mega Drive version in October 1995 (in Germany the SNES version was released in December 1995, while in the US only a year later). None of the SNES sprites were supposed to be in the game. These were just very rough demos, on which the Eurocom team honed the mechanics, without having ready-made sprites of new characters at hand. Maui was planned as a trilogy. This is stated in the design document, which is posted in my interview with Jon Williams (link in the description of the video) The sequel takes place on the same Hawaiian island. Apart from the partner in the person of Mucky, for some reason there was not a single MudDrake in the game. This was also going to be released for the Sega Saturn, but I suppose the lead development platform was the PlayStation and unfortunately nothing was ever done for the Sega Saturn at the early state the game was left. Too bad.

All creators of the game have not been affiliated with Disney since 1997. And Disney still has the rights to the characters. You can’t just make games with IPs of other companies.

Most of the assets were there though. Why stop development so far into the game ? I got the first one when very young, so it kinda has a special meaning to me. Which the sequel would have happened.

The studio was ordered by Disney to make the Hercules game instead and since Disney was paying their bills they had to follow the money.

This particular track (The Story) from the original Maui Mallard game was written by sound designer Patrick Collins. He wrote this and several other tracks for the original game after Michael Giacchino left Disney Interactive before the project was completed. It's a theme from the PC version of the original Genesis/ Mega Drive game (it's missing in the SNES version). Demo has no music at all. Read the description in the beginning of the video.
